Lifes Little Luxuries

Happy Friday!

Besides splurging on cute paper napkins for dining and fun wood pencils for my desk, I also have a thing for beautiful bath towels.  One of my favorite sources for luxury towels in Peacock Alley.  Not only are their towels lush and soft but their textured towels are some of the prettiest you’ll ever see.

Investing in luxury bath towels is wise because you’ll enjoy them more, they will last longer than thinner, value priced towels and they are great way to add UpStyle to your bathroom.

Inspiration {and a design tip}

Happy Sunday!

74fd61c0bf62cc417e61fe16cad4b520
I hope you’ve all had a fantastic weekend.    I’ve been laid up in bed for the good part of the last 5 days with the flu and no energy for blogging or anything else for that matter.  Thank goodness I’m finally feeling better despite a lingering cough and a voice that sounds very much like Barry White.  Since my bedroom and my pillow have been my steady companions for the last few days, I felt it was only fitting to bring you my usual Saturday inspiration + design tip post (although a day late) and include this beautiful and chic bedroom setting.  Be Inspired!
Design Tip:  An easy way to add personality to your bedroom is by substituting a traditional night stand for a piece of accent furniture that will function in the same way.  This tiered table not only makes a great night stand but the shelves give you the opportunity to assemble beautiful storage options for the things you need close by.

I’ll be back tomorrow with a recap of my trip to LA and the Craft and Hobby Association Show!

Easy DIY–Vintage Inspired Basket Tags

When it comes to organization one of my go-to items for keeping things neat is baskets.  I have multiple baskets throughout my home with several basket towers (stacked baskets)to hold ‘stuff’.  I have several baskets in my bedrooms and when I was giving our master bedroom a summer facelift, I found myself thinking about how I could add a vintage touch to the baskets.

I thought about adding fabric to the front like this basket…

5cc0f094b56b89da6eee3141ea3c58c1

or maybe metal numbers like Donna at Funky Junk did with these.

78b904d1fb53ac685ed6bef7d85cea83

While these ideas are really simple to execute, I wanted my tags to have a layered feel to them so I opted for something different.

DIY--VIntage Basket Tags

IMG_2572 copy

You’ll need just a few supplies to make your tags:

Wood pieces (available at your local craft store)
Acrylic paint & sponge brush
Metal corner protectors (available from Articuss Studio Designs)
Sticker Numbers or metal mailbox numbers
Twine (mine is from MayArts)

IMG_2573 copy

All you have to do to create your tags is the paint the wood, glue on the metal corner pieces and attached your numbers.  I used E6000 glue for both my metal corners and the vintage metal mailbox numbers I used.

It’s that easy to create Vintage Inspired Basket Tags!

Several of the tags  used on the baskets in my bedroom were attached with the twine.  I simply drilled two holes on each end of the wood piece, inserted the twine and tied the tag on to the basket.

Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (55)

If you want a more aged look with your metal corners you can use Rub-n-Buff to change the color.

These tags were so easy and quick to make and would work on all types of boxes and bins you might have around your house.  Just think of the possibilities!

Thanks for stopping by.

Paint, Pillows and Pink

Happy Monday!
Thanks everyone for the sweet comments about my wedding anniversary and the hubby’s birthday.  The weekend was one big celebration with some thrift shopping thrown into the mix.  All was good in the world!
Last weekend I came up with the idea of painting our bedroom armoire black.  Naturally I did some research on Pinterest before I made the final decision but was pretty sure black was the color so choice.  Our bedroom is not large and has a combination of several stained wood pieces.  I wanted to mix things up a bit while still keeping true to the mostly black and white color theme so painting the armoire black and changing up a few pillows and accessories was the plan.
Here’s what the room looked like before, with yellow and grey as the accent colors.
IMG_1293
I kept the wall décor pretty simply and used accent pillows on the bed and ottoman to add interest.
IMG_0890
The black, yellow and grey color combo is great for the fall and winter.  There is just enough color to give the room some energy on cold, dark days.
IMG_0895
I had the ottoman covered in black with a white mini dot and used a combination of solid and patterned pillows.  The black and white diamond pillow I made from a .99 cent bandana and I added the black buttons to the yellow pillows that I already owned.
IMG_1253
The black silk drapes  have a black-out liner {because I need to sleep in total darkness} and were up-styled with the addition of a black and white trim.
IMG_1302
Many of the accessories are silver, white and yellow to go with the overall color theme.
IMG_1288
You can see the armoire here with its stained finish.  I love mixing stained finishes with black and white because it keeps the space rich without being too dark.
I’m going to have the chair re-upholstered but for now it has a black tone-on-tone diamond print slipcover on it.
That’s how things looked until a little paint, pillow change and some pink were added to the mix.
Here’s what the room looks like now…
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (73)
Solid pink pillows (cushions from Ikea) replaced the yellow and grey pillows and I added a patterned pillow I made from dinner napkins I purchased on clearance at World Market.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (87)
I also made the black and white dot pillow and the black and white lattice pillow cases (fabric from Hobby Lobby).
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (84)
The white and black bedspreads stayed the same.  I have several different pillows I place on the ottoman including a solid red and a grey and white patterned pillow which was in the chair before.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (80) copy
The yellow floral pillow works on the ottoman too and picks up the yellow in the patterned pillow on the bed.
At the foot of the bed are two storage baskets that I added some DIY vintage inspired tags to.  I’ll share this easy project with you later this week.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (71)
Here’s the armoire after getting several coats of black paint.  Of course the sun was shining in full glory when I was taking this photo so excuse the glare.
The black paint we used was Clark and Kensington {Ace Hardware} Ace of Spades.  It’s a deep black with a hint of dark charcoal in it.  This was the first time I have painted with Clark and Kensington paint and I really liked how it performed.  We had a paint and primer in one so it went on smooth and has a nice finish.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (51)
I changed out the knobs to these beauties.  I L.O.V.E. them.  They are from none other than Hobby Lobby.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (62)
For an added touch of glam I lined the drawers with this fun black and grey animal print drawer liner.  (TJ Maxx)
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (97) copy
Here’s a detail shot of the top of the armoire.  I used the same drawer liner paper to cover two round boxes and added in the basket for texture and shape, the mercury glass vase for shine and the black finial for dimension and height ($3.00–Hobby Lobby clearance).
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (52)
Here’s a look inside at the drawers and the bottom shelf.  The black and white animal print box works great with some of my milk glass pieces and my silver tray with perfume.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (48)
I placed another basket inside the armoire too.
(the numbers on the basket tags are all numbers that have significance in our lives)
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (89)
Here’s a look at a wall décor grouping in the room. I painted the abstract piece of art and the sweet dreams canvas.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (55)
I love lots of texture in a bedroom.  It just feels cozier to me.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (58)
Here’s another baskets that holds reading material on my side of the bed.
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (80) copy
Summer 2013 Bedroom Update (92)
One of the things I always try to do with the pillows in my décor is to find patterns that work together and can be switched up seasonally.  Pulling colors from a key pattern in the room is a great way to build a color palette that relates.
The pop of pink is perfect for summer and we really love our “new” armoire.  It always amazes me how a little paint can change the feel of a space.
I hope you enjoyed my bedroom update and I’ll see you back here tomorrow.

Decorating with Doors: 10 Inspirational Ideas

I just started working on a new project and I want to incorporate an old door into the design plan.  The space I’m working on is a family room that will be decorated in a casual, vintage-inspired  old-world style  Before I get knee-deep in the design process I went looking for some design inspiration using old doors and came across some pretty great ideas.  This is what has me inspired…
9cb25c33c898d4941e2cd27c0aa7fdc9
I love the idea of an old door styled with bookshelves flanking a seating area.  I also think this idea would be great in a kitchen styled with cookbooks and cooking accessories.
4ffcaaeb4d9c19b232aa57ce9637d5cc
Most of the doors I come across are solid wood, but I really like this look with glass pane doors as a wall décor alternative.  Positioned behind a console table and against a painted or wallpapered wall, the doors add architectural details without being visually heavy.

An old door with hooks added would be great in a foyer or near a back door.  This is also a really cute idea for a bathroom or bedroom wall to hold towels and robes.

76fa4881932465f9af9b11518335fe73

A slim panel door can be positioned behind a side chair to fill a corner or create a vignette in the living room.  I love the idea of hanging a basket or even a piece of framed art on the door to embellish it a bit more.

This is the look I’m loving most. I love the way the door helps to fill up the wall space next to the cabinet and adds a bold statement to the entire wall vignette.

Old doors make a great headboard.

This is a fun decorative statement for a guest bedroom or home office.

The idea of an old door as the backdrop to a nightstand is pretty cool.  The addition of a light sconce makes the door stylish and functional.

A door bookcase is a great way to add organization to a girl or boys room without spending a lot of money.

And I love the idea of an old door turned into a coffee table.  This is an easy DIY project that yields great results for a den or basement play area.
Anything vintage and old including an old door is a great way to add charm to your home.
So, do you like the idea of decorating with doors?  If so, what room in your home would you place one?

A Headboard is required for a stylish bedroom.  The current trend is upholstered headboard because of the softness and style they add to a bedroom,  but a decorative wood or iron headboard will give you the same dynamic impact.

A quick way to add unique style to your bed is by using the mix-and-match method with your bed linens.  Pair a patterned flat sheet with a fitted solid sheet and then use pillowcases in a different pattern to add to the mix.  Investing in different styles of sheets and pillowcases will allow you to change-up the look of your bed on a regular basis. And a decorative throw blanket is always a great last layer to a UpStyled bed.

Makes sure to accent your bed with Accent Pillows.  One, two or even more accents pillows in fun patterns and colors will add that designer touch to your bedroom. Whenever I see a pillow on clearance that will work with my bedroom décor, I snap it up and stash it away.  When I make seasonal changes to my bedding, changing our the accent pillows makes a big impact.

While not the case with every bed, most beds and bedroom décor will benefit from the addition of  unique item hung on the wall above the headboard.  The area above the bead gives you the perfect opportunity to create a focal point in the room and add a bold style statement. A grouping of multiple items adds just as much impact as one large item.

Texture is king in a stylish bedroom.  Dress you bed in linens that have surface interest or a textured pattern.  Matelassé coverlets are always a good option and provide a subtle texture that you can build upon.  And don’t forget that pillows are part of the texture mix.

If you’re looking for a dramatic way to UpStyle your bed, hanging drapes behind the head of the bed might be the answer.  A swag of fabric, while somewhat traditional in feeling adds an element of romance and visual height to the room.

Is the bedskirt on your bed there to hide the stuff stored under the bed OR is it there to add style to your bed décor?  Style should be the key reason you use a bedskirt on the bed.  Not only does a bedskirt add softness and make your bed look more grand, but that bit of fabric that hangs to the floor is another way to add pattern, texture and personality to your décor.  The image above uses a collection of decorative dish towels to create a fun bedskirt.

Layering is the ultimate UpStyle trick for your bedroom.  With your bed décor, the layers start under the bed at the floor and work their way up to the everything that sits on and surrounds your bed.  The rug is a layer, the bedding is a layer, the wall décor is a layer and all the decorative elements that sit on your nightstand are layers.  Just like the décor in other parts of your home, layering the decorative elements adds a sense of depth and warmth and makes a space feel more complete.
Creating a designer looking bedroom is not as hard as it seems.  Incorporating one or all of these tips will get your bedroom style moving in the right direction and will surely help you UpStyle Your Bed.
Happy Decorating!
