Design Inspiration: The Chaise Lounge

DESIGN INSPIRATION:  THE CHAISE LOUNGE

The term ‘chaise lounge’ refers to a long reclining chair whose roots date back to Egypt.  Back then, the chaise lounge was looked at as a mix between a chair and a daybed.  Today, it is viewed as a long chair and is used in decor as an alternative to a traditional chair or sofa.

Over the years I’ve been a bit indifferent to chaise lounges mostly because the only styles available were the Victorian designs. I don’t have anything against Victorian designs but this style of chaise can feel stagnate and old if it hasn’t been updated with fabric.

In the last 10 years, the look of chaise lounges have evolved and the designs are sleek and modern with a traditional undertone.  And when it comes to decorating with a chaise, there is so much inspiration out there.

I love the idea of using two chaise lounges to create a relaxing sitting area especially if you have a view that can be enjoyed from the perch.

In a sunroom or covered outdoor space, a chaise lounge (or two) creates a more relaxing retreat than a sofa might.

source

A chaise is a great option for a reading nook and can nestle into a corner but still feel connected to the room.

source

In an oversized bathroom, a chaise adds the ultimate touch of luxury and glamour especially when upholstered in a luxurious velvet fabric.

My friend Erika of Erika Ward Interiors used two chaise lounges in a master bedroom sitting area.  This type of seating is perfect for creating cozy space to relax or for that Saturday afternoon nap.

source

I love a backless chaise as added seating in a living room.  Because the design is open on both sides, this style is a great filler piece in large rooms.

In smaller rooms that don’t get use often, two chaise lounges can be a unique seating option.

Style At Home

What to put at the foot of a bed? is a question I get a lot.  A chaise lounge is something I often recommend because they add style and a functional to a bedroom.

Inspired?  Now let’s go shopping..

My Favorite Chaise Lounge Chairs

#1–The Alton Roll Arm Chaise from Pier 1 is a modern take on a one arm chaise.  I love the squared off back and the grey velvet fabric.  This item is on clearance for $429.98 so you’ll need to act fast to snag it.

#2-Crate and Barrel has several chaise lounge styles but the Montclair Chaise is my favorite.  The design is clean and simple and there are a multitude of fabric options so you can customize the look for your home-$1299.00.  For a more masculine space, check out the Garbo Leather Chaise.

#3–The Iris Chaise Lounge from Joss and Main has beautiful lines and the tufted back gives it a classic touch.  I can envision this space as part of a library or it a ladies lounge.  $464.99

#4–Another great option from Joss and Main is the Kiera Tufted Chaise.  This piece has a smaller scale making it ideal for a small room or corner sitting area.  $659.99

#5–The Carlisle Upholstered Chaise from Pottery Barn would look great in a sitting area off a bedroom or in a bathroom.  The rolled arms and tailored profile along with over 50 fabric options are just some of the reasons why I love this piece.  $1449 to $2649 depending on fabric.

#6–If you’re looking for a budget friendly option, the Kivik Chaise from Ikea is an option.  At only $350 this piece has a removable cover which will make cleaning easy.  And if you want to change the look down the road, the Kivik is a great candidate for a custom slip-cover.

Spotted At HomeGoods for Spring

IMG_8518

It’s been a while since I’ve been to HomeGoods.  It usually takes them a good month + to restock their stores after Christmas so I usually wait until mid February or March to see what’s new for spring.  I’m fortunate that there are four HomeGoods within a 10-15 minute drive from my house. Having been to all of the store many times, I’ve learned which ones get the most stock and have the best inventory.

A couple of days ago I popped into two HomeGoods stores.  The first store was lean on merchandise but they did  one great piece that stopped me in my tracks.

This small acrylic table was just gorgeous and I imagined how great it would look as a side table, or bar cart.  I was surprised to see it in the store but at $99.00 I think the price stopped a lot of people in their tracks.  (update:  I posted this table on Instagram and like me it was a hit.  I went back to get the style number for someone and unfortunately it sold the evening that I saw it)

The other HomeGoods I went to is my favorite.  The shelves are usually filled to the max and they always have a great selection of furniture.  Here’s a look at what I spotted…

These marble top nesting tables were stunning.  I love the two-tone marble combined with the chrome base.  I’d pair these with a pair of leather chairs to create a stylish seating area.

IMG_8497

This rustic wood media console was well made and the wood tone was really nice.  This would be an easy piece to mix with modern or eclectic decor.

IMG_8498

The color of the year, Marsala is well represented in HomeGoods and I spotted it in this sleek desk/console table.  The gold x-legs and crystal knobs just add to the style of this piece.

IMG_8506

There were lots of fret work pieces in the store.  I’ve seen this mirrored chest of drawers before and still love it.  It would make the perfect night stand.

IMG_8504

Finding oversized coffee table can be a challenge sometimes.  This wood beauty had great lines and a nice finish.  The glass top and bottom would add an airy feel to a living space.

IMG_8507

HomeGoods must be predicting this metal cross leg table a winner because there were about 6 of them in the store.  The height is ideal if someone is looking for a nightstand with minimal details.  I think it would also look great in a bathroom holding towels and personal care items.

IMG_8508

There were lots of small side tables to choose from in varying styles, shapes and finishes.

IMG_8509

This round brass and marble table was my favorite.

IMG_8510

IMG_8513

Spring is garden stool season at HomeGoods and they continue to bring in updated styles in great colors.  Blue is definitely a trending color for spring and they has several styles to choose from.

IMG_8516

I loved this green stool and really considered buying it.

IMG_8517

This orange table/stool was so cute and would make a fun accent table on a sun porch or in a kids room.

IMG_8515

There were lots of chairs in the store but this is the only one that really caught my attention.  I love the detail of plaid on the back.

IMG_8502

HomeGoods has been carrying more and more headboards and this twin headboard was a winner.  The orange piping was the perfect detail to dress up the neutral fabric.  How cute would this be paired with that orange stool above.

IMG_8503

If you’re in the market for an ottoman to put at the foot of the bed or use as a coffee table, now is the time to shop.  Most of the ottomans were storage ottoman too which gives you more bang for your buck.

IMG_8511

IMG_8512

The pillow shelves were overflowing.

If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again…you can’t beat the lamps at HomeGoods.

The store I was in had a great selection of bold brass lamps

and some really great decorative styles in ceramic and metal.  These striped lamps were killer!

And if you’ve gotta entertaining on the calendar for spring, be sure to check out the housewares section for beautiful plates, bowls and serving pieces like the lemon plate at the top.

So, have you spotted anything great at HomeGoods for spring? #homegoodshappy

11 Design Details I’m Loving & that you can do in your own home

Slide1

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, Design is in the Details.  And that’s one of the things I love about design.  The fact that you can take a basic ordinary architectural element, accessory, furniture piece or decorative element and use it to create something unique and beautiful for your home.  I’m working on a project that is requiring me to think about details and how they can be used to transform a space and save money at the same time.  With details on my mind I thought I’d share 11 of my favorite ideas, ideas you can use in your own home.

Split Personality

I’ve written about my love of chairs on many occasions and think every home needs a “happy” chair, one that if playful and distinct in its style, one with a bit of a split personality.

One of my favorite ways to achieve a “happy chair” look is with pattern mixing.  I love the look for chairs that have one pattern on the front and a different pattern on the sides or back.  The more pattern mixing the better!

 Here are few inspiring looks…

When pattern mixing don’t be afraid to mix leather with cotton fabrics….the contrast can be stunning.

See you back here tomorrow with a fun Room of the Week and an inspiring quote!

Room of The Week

Pinned Image

So refreshing to see a beautiful interior with gold and brass as the accent.  Gold tones elevate the look and feel of a space adding elegance and high style.  The reddish toned wood walls and flooring enhance the gold finishes while the off-white textiles, carpet and accessories make an understated impact.

p.s.  That coffee table and black and white chair are to-die-for!

Room Of The Week: Perfect Pops of Color

Pinned Image

An all white room brought to life with the perfect pops of color!

When I look at this room, I see the different finishes used on the ceiling (high gloss) and walls (flat) and how that slight variation makes the architectural details stand out. I love the lighter finished floors and how that same wood tone is repeated as an accent in the area rug, tray and green pillow, giving it more impact. The mix of materials (tables, ottoman, lamp) fill this space with personality. And, there’s no better way to add interest to neutral furniture than to add colorful and artistic pillows.

I’d call this a refined space full of fun!
