Happy Chair

Sorry I’ve been MIA for the last few days, but I’ve been crazy busy, working on several design projects at once, power shopping for a client, trying to finish up my bedroom makeover and making every effort to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night, so I can look 20 years younger (according to Oprah and her team).

When my world gets a bit out of control like it is now, I find myself  looking for inspiration that will lift my spirits and get me energized again.

Happy Chair did the trick!

I love a room with a happy chair. You know the chair, the one that is full of design personality and overflowing with style.

Happy Chair is a company founded by Shawna Robinson, a former Nascar driver, turned furniture designer!  Shawna’s passion for design, art, home furnishings and bold patterns led her to create this unique and whimsical chair company!

Bird on A Wire

Taking old, worn and weathered chairs, Shawna reconstructs and hand-crafts each chair into a work of art.  Using bold paint colors, new and vintage fabrics, and adding unique details to each chair gives them their own flair.

After each chair is completed, Shawna names the piece based on the personality and character it exudes, making it an even more personalized.

Here’s a look at a few of my favorite Happy Chairs!

I don’t know about you, but these chairs put a smile on my face.

DESIGNING IN DENIM

As seen during Spring and Summer runway shows, denim is a hot fabric trend in the fashion circuit.  While that may not seem unusual, given that denim is a staple in just about everyone’s wardrobe, denim as a new, hot  fabric trend in the home furnishings industry is what is taking people off guard.

Years ago, it was not unusual to see denim sofas as part of a “French Country” or “Shabby Chic” decor, but then just like so many other trends, the use of denim diminished and went by the way-side.  Well, its 2010 and like the saying goes, “what goes around, comes around.”

Denim is back, and back in a refreshing and exciting way!

The color of denim has even been interpreted into a paint color by Ralph Lauren.

A refreshing way to interpret denim into an interior is my using a mix of denim stripes and patterned fabrics .

While blue denim is the most popular choice of denim colors,  the base fabric can be dyed into just about any color you want!

The Samantha Chair from Specific Merchandise offers a new, refreshing look for denim.  I love the natural colored fibers and the red and black trim detail they’ve added.

Denim isn’t just for jeans anymore!

PLEASE BE SEATED

One of my current obsessions is BEAUTIFUL ACCENT CHAIRS.  I love to walk into a room and see one or two beautifully upholstered or artistically designed side chairs.  I really feel that a side chair painted a unique color or upholstered in a unique fabric can make a room come to life, and every other piece of furniture around it sing.

This weekend, I plan to attend Scott’s Antique Market here in Atlanta, where I hope to find a worn and weathered chair that I can bring back to life.  I envision my chair with lots of curved lines, a fabric back and seat and some exposed wood so that I can paint it chinese red (my favorite color).  I’ll upholster my chair in a gorgeous fabric, maybe add a nail head trim and possibly antique brass casters to the legs.  Whatever my chair turns out looking like, it will definitely be a chair full of personality.  I’ll share before and after photos in a later post.

Until then, take a seat in your favorite chair and be inspired by these OH SO BEAUTIFUL ACCENT CHAIRS!
