Anatomy of Bathroom Windows

Whenever I’m working on a design project that involves a bathroom, one of the first questions the home owners have is always about what type of window treatment is best on the windows.  The answer to this just is not always clear-cut, but there are some looks that I prefer over others and definitely some design considerations you have to keep in mind when it come the window décor in the bathroom.

The first and foremost question is what type of privacy do you need?  Naturally if you live in the country and are surrounded by open fields you can probably get away with a little less coverage than someone living in the city.

Next, think about the style of your bathroom.  Not every bathroom will look good with fabric window treatments and others may not be suited for blinds or shutters.  The style of your space will definitely impact your window treatment choice.

Third, think about use!  Do you have to open/close them daily?  Can you access the windows easily?  In our first house in Seattle, I hung curtain panels on the window over the soaking tub.  Every day when I had to open and close the panels I had to step into the large tub to reach them.  In hindsight, blinds or shutters would have been a more functional option for me.

Keeping these three things in mind, here are some images of bathroom window treatments that work and why!

08b51bf81acbdf54f014574645762fbf

The roman shades in this bathroom are fabulous. As designers always recommend, they are hung up high, making the space feel grander and the top valance detail adds the visual weight to balance them against the large tub.  Because the windows can be easily accessed opening and closing these would not be a problem.

(image this space with wood plantation shutters–too heavy and bulky for these large windows.  They would dominate the look of this bathroom)

a3aa3095c6d471711ece20e7e3f1c42b

For this small window I love that the lower half of the window was frosted to provide privacy while the upper half was left clear to let light stream in.  The simple roman shade (hung inside the window frame) adds just the right amount of detail and design this space needs.

(curtain panels in this space would be overwhelming and blinds would be to lack-luster)

fdc2ed65f673694b61117c5e4c56a927

Here’s an example of curtain panels hung over a soaking tub.  What I like about this is that the panels are the same color as the tile, so they visually just float away.  They are also lightweight which would make opening and closing easy.

( patterned curtain panels and shutters would have been too much for this space and would have fought with the tile pattern)

5ad206ce878d3f97b68258e1a54c5831

In this space I think the floor to ceiling curtain panels work.  the pattern draws your eye to the window and serves as a nice frame to the window.  The sides of the tub can be accessed, again making opening and closing these curtain easy.

( shutters would have made the window feel even more like a big box and would not have added any softness to the space)

6669ec26c08f141c0d0a8c703688ea6e

The top and bottom curtain treatment in this bathroom works perfectly for the style of the space.  The flooring and the window treatments both have somewhat of a causal, country vibe.  Light can easily flow in through the expose windows while the lover panels provide privacy.

(because of the corner windows, this option was really smart.  Shutters or blind would have felt to heavy and lopsided)

9537fcb7000b0a803cbd9a5d4210029a

Shutters on the lower half of a bathroom window can be a great option in a sleek and classic bathroom.  The shutters provide privacy and provide visual balance with the wall cabinet and adjacent.

(curtain panels on this off-set window would have drawn attention to that face and would have made the window appear smaller)

1ba026847e2a0eff1244ed4b77890f05

Frosted bathroom windows are often the choice many builders but into a new home.  I like the simple diamond pattern on this window which helps to keep the space feel modern.  The swagged valance add softness and frames the window perfectly.

(curtain panels could have worked in this bathroom although they would have given the entire tub area a more boxed in feel)

This is probably my favorite bathroom window treatment option, Top-Down, Bottom-Up shades.  These window treatments allow you to raise and lower the panel as you wish to expose or close off as much of the window as you want. The look is clean and simple which is ideal in many of todays bathroom styles.

If you’ve looked at your bathroom windows and are wondering what the best approach is, I hope this helps point you in the right direction.

Happy Decorating!

White After Labor Day

This time of year there’s lots of debate whether you should wear white clothing after labor day and if so, how to make the look work for fall.  Seldom do you hear conversation taking place about how to make a white décor work for fall.  With so many people decorating with white these days, I thought I share a few design ideas for transitioning your white décor from summer to fall.

Slide1

No. 1

Mix shades of white and tan to take the crisp edge off your décor while adding depth and dimension .  Pick colors that range from white to mid-tone browns and layer in textured fabrics for visual dimension.

No. 2

Use natural fall colors like green, yellow, orange and rust to make your whites look warmer.  Fall is the time to accessorize with natural stems, gourds, leaves and foliage.

No. 3

Woven textures in rugs and baskets give white fabrics a richer feel for fall.

No. 4

Deep, jewel tone colors play well against white furnishings and make a space feel cozier.  The teal pillows on this sofa really bring a vibrancy to the space.

No. 5

Accessorize with soft, fluffy textiles and layer, layer, layer.

No. 6

Mixing different materials like glass, wood, bone, and ceramic will add dimension to otherwise one-dimensional white surfaces.

No. 7

A fall colored throw adds an instant fall update to white furniture. The color brings the feel of the outdoors in and is visually stimulating.

No. 8

Another design trick you can do is switching the focus. Switch out a solid textured rug with a patterned style and opt for solid pillows instead of patterns.  Having a strong pattern on the floor gives a room the impression of weight which conveys a sense of warmth, which equals fall.

Your overall approach for transitioning your summer whites into the fall is to add layers, deepen the color accents, mix in textures and vary the finishes.  These simple steps will make your home a cozy fall retreat.

My Fall Coffee Table {inspirational ideas}

Good day to you!  I jumped right into work this morning and after churning away for hours, I realized I hadn’t posted my blog post for today.  Sorry for the tardiness.  Seems that my days have a mind of their own and I just might have to start posting in the afternoons rather than the mornings. It is my goal to post at a regular time each day so if you have a preference, morning or afternoons, leave me a comment and let  me know.

Now on to the good stuff.  How many of you have starting decorating for fall??  I’m definitely in the mood and plan to get a few fall vignettes in place this week.  One of the first areas I want to infuse a little fall into is my coffee table.  I tend to like more vs less on my table but can’t decide what look I want to go with.  These are some of the images that are inspiring me but the only thing I know for sure is that my décor will include a candle (or two), a tray, books and this!

I really like the look of a dark candle hurricane and am thinking about this tortoise candleholder or using this paper to diy my own.

A lantern is always a great look for a coffee table.  Love the look that Kim over at Savvy Southern Style pulled together for her table.

I do love flowers on the coffee table and this mix of fall colored stems and greenery is really nice.

It wasn’t so much the coffee table décor here that caught my eye, but the idea of using a knit throw as a coffee table cloth?  Interesting!

30bad907b3f04f954503146391c1c176

There’s my gold sphere and books. Just needs a some true fall touches.

5b188bfc449959502249136f972463a5

I’m so loving the idea of different boxes on the table.  HomeGoods or diy??

d5d530675abd19349b6139711d7c19b2

And finally, I really like this wood piece and cloche that Donna from Funky Junk Interiors styled for her coffee table.  And just think, I happened to stumbled across these tree slabs on-line. {lumberjacking is not on my skills list, so this is definitely not a diy for me}!

So which look to do you like best and have you starting decorating for fall?

Office Spaces to Love

Slide1
As someone who works from home, I’m always checking out office spaces on Pinterest. In my book, the perfect home office doesn’t have to be large or filled with designer touches but does need to be functional, have pretty accessories and incorporate personal touches. Here are 10 of my favorite office spaces and why they work in my book.
2219611fd139c1a798a645962b36dcd2
One of the things I love about that this compact work station is that there is room to spread out and if needed accommodates two people working.  I recently added a glass top to my desk and think that really adds to the style of a work surface.
2d4a43559c93f950be07ae6af064e567
This is a great example of a personalized work area.  The two lamps help to define the desk and the inspiration board is a great centerpiece to this gallery wall, which is full of personal pieces.
d2f5fb945f61a6b08c26b08d59bde428
While not exactly my style, this super sleek and modern desk offers style and function with the drawer unit that helps keep the desk area uncluttered.  If I was to change one thing about this space it would be the chair…this desk calls for a chair with more style.

There are so many cute things in this office space.  The desk is charming (love the curves) and the chalkboard is functional and pretty. I also love the dress form which adds a personal feel to this work space.

Isn’t this space pretty?  I love the painted desk top and the overall arrangement of this L-shaped work surface. The bookshelves are the perfect mix of decorative and functional items and that chandelier adds a touch of glam.  This beautiful space was designed by Sabrina of Pink Little Notebook who has a fabulous blog I highly recommend you check out.
270cb1d02ec8639f923819a2e8397c01
My favorite part of this work space is the floating shelves which help keep the space open and airy but still provide ample space for organization and display.
3a1c42f816e0bfcc9e6b37b11b150c25
What really makes this office space work for me are the pops of bold color with all the white.  The expedite bookcase is great for storage and I love the Louis chair in place of a traditional office chair.  Only thing missing…a fun rug!
f580ea728f8fc25fe51056cfafb54cb9
Cute and compact is how I’d describe this office space.  The bold wall color definitely adds lots of energy and the plant adds visual interest.
810c531fbecc8d83eb717fd11d99ca46
I’m all for a non-traditional desk in an office and love that this space feel mores like an extension of the homes décor than a hard-core office space.
Sunset Office--Sunset
I’ve always liked the idea of an office space in a closet.  This is the perfect solution when space is at a premium.  The open shelves are great for decorative storage boxes  and accessories, and the top cabinet gives you space to store more mundane office supplies behind closed doors.
When I look at all of these offices spaces, I realize there are a few common elements that stand out to me and that help define the perfect home office.
1.  Storage–Boxes, Baskets and Bookcases provide storage while also adding to the style of an office space.
2.  Lighting–Unique lighting both on the desktop and overhead help make an office space pretty and functional.
3.  Seating–Non-traditional chairs used as desk chairs are a great way to up-style your work area.
4.  Color–Whether through accessories, wall color or rugs, color makes an office space feel energized.
5.  Wall decor–Mixing functional pieces like chalk or bulletin boards with framed art and inspirational quotes helps to personalized an office space.
6.  Accessories–Every good office deserves pretty accessories.  Using decorative pieces to hold pencil, paper and files makes an office feel less rigid.
7.  Flowers-Guaranteed to make your work space happier!
Want to see what my home office space looks like?  I’ve been doing a little spruce up and will share it with you next week.

Color Crush: Black

Seem that I’m having a love affair with black these days, specifically in the form of BLACK SOFAS!

My initial thought with black sofas was one of doom and dreariness but after seeing more and more of them in design books and on-line, my view of black sofas is now chic and exotic.  A black sofa looks just a stylish with dark fall tone colors as it does with light summery shades.  My favorite color combo is a splash of brights with white.
Take a look at these images and then let me know what you think of black sofas?  To much drama or sophisticated style???

A Round Up of Beautiful Vignettes

Happy Friday.  Today’s post is short on words and long on beautiful vignette images.

Creating vignettes is one of my favorite things to do because to me they are the little design statements you make in your home that say the most about who you  and what you love.

FOUR “It” Accessories You Are Seeing Everywhere

Have you stopped and taken notice that a few really popular decorative accessories that are popping up in every home décor magazine, on store shelves and  in on-line stores.? While I’ve had my eye on these trends for a while and even own a few of these items it wasn’t until my recent magazine de-cluttering marathon that I really noticed how prevalent a selected group of items are in the interior design world. What makes these items so popular and just what are the “it” accessories I’m talking about?

Slide1

Foo Dogs in every color are a super hot decor trend of late.  While they may not be the prettiest accessory, the ceramic dogs are making a splash in every type of room décor, from traditional to modern. I think the attraction is that they are different, have an ethnic flare and make a bold statement. I love these gold dogs at Z Gallerie but if you like a little more color, the next time you’re near a Ross Dress for Less, pop because they are known to have colorful Foo Dogs for cheap!

The Scoppio Sphere is a hot item from Z Gallerie. You can use this piece on tabletops or as a wall décor accent.  There is a sense of whimsy that I think draws people to this piece and makes it so popular.

Buddha heads, Buddha statues, Buddha wall décor.  Buddha’s are admired not only for their spiritual association but also for their artistic style.  The popularity of Buddha is so great that even Walmart has gotten in on the trend.

Not only are Starburst Mirrors becoming a design staple but it is probably one of the most popular DIY projects among DIY bloggers and designers. Starburst mirrors are a wonderful alternative to a round mirror and provide shape and visual interest to a space.  I happen to own two starburst mirrors and am glad to say I bought these before the trend was so hot.

01295784b338c12b5d6b88a3e9ac29da

Because there are so many different versions of starburst mirrors, I think this is one item that will definitely become a classic.  If you’re in the market, Ballard Designs has some of the most popular starburst mirrors on the market.

So, what do you think of these ‘it” accessories?  And which is your favorite?
