Fashion Focus: Overalls

TGIF!

Just dropping in to end the week with a little fashion advice!
Having worked in the fashion industry for years, I’ve seen fashion trends come and go and then come again.  One of the fashion statements that has come back into the fold for spring is DENIM OVERALLS.  Just the other day I was at the mall and within 20 minutes I spotted three young women wearing overalls.  What caught my attention most was not the fact that seeing overalls took me back to my high school days but that there is obviously a right and wrong way to wear this look. Two of the three women I saw got it right and looked super chic, comfortable and fashion forward, the third woman got it wrong and looked like she just stepped off the farm and came to the big city for the day.
With that said, I know many of you will be sporting this look for spring so I thought I’d give you my take on the RIGHT and WRONG ways to look stylish is denim overalls.

oh so WRONG way…

Overalls that are too oversized and slouchy just look dumpy.  She looks like she has on her dad’s overalls and is not happy about it!
Again, too slouchy and the length is way to long.
Never ever wear overalls with just one strap fastened. The last time I saw someone with this look I was in the back woods of Oklahoma, his name was Bubba and he was in the process of skinning a raccoon so it could be BBQ’d (no lie)!
This look is only for females ages 8 or younger.  Stay away from patterns and go with solid denim only!

the RIGHT way…

Slim fit overalls with a cuffed leg look super  chic.  Pair your overalls with a simple tee and wedge sandals or flats for spring.
Overalls are the one place where I think the faded look works and pairing them with a soft blouse will keep the look feminine without being too cutesy!
I love the look of striped tee with overalls. Black and white stripes are always classic and will allow you to accessorize with punch of color. {A little more conservative shoe would be my suggestion}
A win, win look is to pair your overalls with a heel.  Heels add style and a touch of glam.  And again, cuffed bottoms are the way to go.

And for the men that read my blog, the fashion advice I have for you is…..NEVER, EVER WEAR OVERALLS!

Entertaining Tip: Cocktail Napkins

One of the easiest and cost-effective ways to introduce style into your next dinner party or festive event is by using decorative Cocktail Napkins.
source
Cocktail Napkins can be incorporated into your décor to fit your design or color theme.  I love to use cloth cocktail napkins but designer paper napkins often win out because of their ease and cost savings.
source
When using paper cocktail napkins, you’ll create a more stylish look if you use a mix of coordinating patterns and/or colors.
Source
For more casual entertaining, quotable cocktail napkins are fine, but shy away from these for more formal or elegant events.
source
And don’t forget to serve up your cocktail napkins in pretty holders or containers so that every element of your décor is chic!

And if you’re the one being invited to the party and not hosting it, cocktail napkins make an ideal hostess gift!

Best of Etsy: Stylish Desk Accessories

Since I spend so much time in my office, I feel the need to surround myself with pretty office accessories.  Having an organized & stylish office space is not only necessary to fuel my creativity but it also spurs me to keep my small space organized and tidy.  There are a few essential elements I think every office space needs like a desk lamp and desk chair and beyond that there are some really stylish pieces that I think every office could use.  Today I’ve rounded up some of my favorite inspirational office spaces and a handful of adorable office accessories I found on Etsy.
Check it out….be inspired and then get back to work, in style!

I love the simplicity of the space.  The striped rug adds just enough pattern to keep the space interesting and that mirror is a definite style statement.
source
I love the idea of a hanging light over the desk and the bold color that is balanced against an all white space.
source
So much to love about this space.  Why go with a brown wood desk when you the color pink exist?   And that animal print bulletin boards is so stylish.

Upgrading a simple metal file cabinet is just a few paint strokes away.

Fashion Focus: Transitioning from Winter to Spring

While I love the arrival of spring, I also hate this time of year because the weather is just plain wacky!  One day it’s warm and the next I’m back in my UGG’s or wearing my rain boots.
When the weather is so unpredictable, there is one piece of clothing I rely on.  This piece allows me to layer without feeling bulky on cooler days and when the day is warmer, this piece is lightweight enough to keep me comfortable while giving me a little coverage.  I also like that my g0-to winter to spring transition piece can be worn with jean and a tee or dressed up a bit with a maxi skirt and jewels.  So, do you want to know what my favorite transition piece of clothing is?  It’s the………….

When it comes to fashion I love a piece of clothing that can carry me from one season to the next and allows me to wear it in multiple ways.

In my book that is a true wardrobe staple!

What’s your go to spring fashion piece?

Design Trend: Pastels

I spotted this book at the bookstore over the weekend and was really taken by all the beautiful images it has. As someone who was classified years ago as a “winter” {remember the days of the fashion color wheel?} I have never had a real affinity for pastels in my clothing or in my décor.  I am however growing to like the infusion of a few soft color statements in a room and how they portray a sense of femininity and sophistication. And in fashion, nothing seems fresher for spring than soft colored accessories

A Unique Art Find Right here in Atlanta

One of my favorite styles of artwork is collage art.  I love the concept behind collage work, combining various elements together to create a story or paint a picture.  A couple of years ago, I featured some collage art that I came across from one of my favorite vendors at the Atlanta mart, Paragon The collage pieces from their artist were so dynamic and interesting.  Little did I know that the artist behind these works lives right here in Atlanta and is a fellow designer with many of the same passions as me.  This talented designer  is Timothy Burney and I recently had the opportunity to view some of his newest work.  All I can say is Amazing!!!!

I can’t wait to share a few of my favorite pieces from his collection with you, but first let me tell you a bit about this artist.  Timothy was born and raised in Mississippi and has a love for photography and design.  He is fascinated by ‘objets’ and incorporates them into is work.  Timothy was an antique dealer for 20 years and many of his ‘objets’ were purchased during his travels to England and France (I want to go) which makes his art even more unique because they are one-of-a-kind.  In addition to the incredible shadow box art that Timothy creates he also produces beautiful pieces from his photography and a selection of unique clocks.  Many of his pieces are available only to the trade thru Paragon but he does have a website where you can view and buy his work.

Now, on to the eye candy…

Chopin

This Chopin bust collage is incredible.  I love the mix of antique pieces that add so much dimension and visual interest.

Carpenter

This piece really speaks to the collector in me.  The antique ruler and architectural rendering are awesome.  Just what every designer needs for their studio.

Buttons (1)

Another tug on my heartstrings.  I love buttons, especially vintage ones and this display is really fun.

4426

This is one of the clocks made for the Paragon collection.  Wouldn’t this look great as part of a gallery wall?

4405

How about this collection of vintage clocks under glass!  I so love!

Documents

A vintage letter & envelopes dating back to the early 1900’s.

No.900

Another one-of-a-kind collage piece combining vintage documents, art and findings.

Johnson Bros

This set of Johnson Bros. bowls with a silver spoon would be so beautiful in a kitchen or dining room.  I love Johnson Bros. and have purchased several pieces when I’ve been out antiquing.

Final Framed2

Beautiful French ornamental pieces mounted on top of old documents.

Coronation

And I so adore this framed antique clock face.  Pretty cool!

You have to take a moment to check out all the art and photography on the TimothyBDesign website.  I promise you’ll be inspired and want to buy a piece.

And, for those of you that live in Atlanta, Timothy just opened a space in the new Westside Market on Ellsworth Industrial.  This new market is a collection of vintage and antique  dealers and showcases a few of my favorite dealers like Parker Kennedy. I haven’t had a chance to visit the market in person but plan a trip next week to check it out and will be sure to take lots of pics.

Until next time…
