Atlanta Market Recap–Part 2

The Atlanta Home Gift and Home Furnishings market always has a great line-up of design talent speaking throughout the show.  I always make it a point to attend and always come away learning a few new things.

One of the events I attended was entitled, What’s Your Style:  New Media and Design.  The panel discussion was moderated by Krissa Rossbund, the senior design and style editor for Traditional Home, and included design icon Stan Topol, design maven Tobi Fairley and the co-founder of Matchbook Magazine, Katie Armour.

The panel discussed a variety of topics, but much of the conversation centered around developing a successful design or retail  business utilizing both traditional and modern forms of marketing and social media.

  1. Be Professional, in what you say, how you act and how you run your business.  Clients will trust us as designers it we run every aspect of our business in a professional way. And, always work with a contract
  2. Be Clear and Concise with clients. As designers, we are hired for our skill and ideas, and it is our responsibility to make sure that our clients clearly understand our vision so they can buy into it.
  3. Don’t under-value your time or creativity.  This hit home to me, as I sure it will with many designers.  We often give away our ideas, time and talent when were in the moment, versus fully acknowledging our gift and charging for it.
  4. Use your blog to showcase your work….it’s a great way to reach a wider audience and showcase your expertise.
  5. Share your design experience with your blog readers and build a relationship with them.
  6. Develop a source for original content–this will give your blog its unique personality.
  7. Use twitter to strike up a conversation with others in the design industry.  I wasn’t on the twitter band-wagon at first, but I now realize how value it can be to building your business and most importantly building friendships.

And, one last bit of wisdom shared by Mr. Topol that I took to heart was this…”Our payment is our creativity…when we compromise our creativity, we are cheating ourselves!”

It was great to chat with Tobi after the presentation and have this photo taken.

Another wonderful presentation I attended was with designer Vicente Wolf.    He discussed his design philosophy and had a few words of advice:

  • Don’t over think the design process–follow your gut!
  • To create the most interesting and beautiful spaces, mix old and new elements.
  • Think of design like you do cooking..a pinch of this, a touch of that–combine elements to give the space its flavor.

I also attended a presentation by Kathryn M. Ireland, one of the talents on the hit Bravo show Million Dollar Decorators. Kathryn was so down to earth and such a pleasure to listen to.  She shared stories of the show, her “insane” life as she calls it, and a few photos of  her work.

Kathryn was signing copies of her new book, Summers in France, so I picked up a copy and had a photo taken with her.

And finally, I sat in on a presentation given by Marie Nygren, co-founder of Serenbe and Keith Robinson, owner of the event design firm Gloriosa Event Design.  This dynamic duo gave tips and techniques for developing stylish party settings using eco-friendly products.

Here are few party  design ideas shared by Marie and Keith:

  • Monogram flat bed sheets and used them as a stylish tablecloth option
  • Incorporate vegetables from the garden into your centerpiece and tablescape–it’s an easy way to add color and texture
  • Cover plastic chairs with bed sheets, curtain panels or fabric remnants (as Keith did in the above photo)
  • Layer, Layer, Layer for interest and to create depth
  • Don’t be afraid to move furniture from the inside the house, out and use it as part of your decor
  • Candles are a must for any party occasion
  • Don’t be afraid to mix and match china or dinnerware–this can sometimes create the most beautiful table decor
  • Be unique and do something that will make your table decor stand out.

The Atlanta Market always brings in great talent during the show, so if you get the chance to attend, jump on it.  The next major show takes place in January 2012.

I hope you enjoyed my insider view of market. Tomorrow  I’ll be back with the final installment of my visit to market, focusing on some of the new design books coming out later this year.

Have a great weekend!

The Makings of a Beautiful Nightstand

Nightstands are a key part in every bedroom, anchoring the bed and giving the entire space form,  function and style!

Here’s what it takes to make your nightstand, stand out…

  • The Nightstand Itself–whenever possible, avoid a matching piece to your bed/headboard.  A unique nightstand will give new life to a simple headboard/bed.  Try a piece of antique furniture, a small writing desk, a cabinet with drawers, a skirted round table or even stacked luggage pieces.  Do something unexpected!

  • The Lighting–choose a lamp that will provide good reading light and one that adds some style and personality to the space.  Ceramic base lamps are great for bedrooms as are crystal or glass lamps.  And, if your nightstand is too small to hold a tabletop lamp, think about hanging a pendant overhead.  Trey Chic!

  • The AccessoriesI don’t know about you, but I love to have a stash of special treasures on my nightstand…
Books/iPad–for late night reading or early morning blog browsing
Scented Candle–lighting a candle an hour or so before you go to bed will help you sleep better and have sweet dreams
Bedside Clockforgo the glow-in-the-dark electronic version and add a stylish chrome or brass clock next to your bed
Flowers–real or faux, flowers will add a sense of opulence to your bedroom.
Photos–a photo of my husband and I sits on my nightstand…a great reminder as I fall to sleep of what matters most.

And, for those of you that like a cleaner look on your nightstand, use decorative boxes or baskets to hold everything.
  • The Surround–decorating your nightstand does not just stop at what you put on top of your nightstand. Creating a dynamic look for your nightstand also includes what surrounds it.  I love hanging a grouping of framed art on the wall above the nightstand, or a decorative mirror.  Both elements will add impact around your nightstand.

My Favorite Accessory Pieces–Classic and Timeless

My favorite part of decorating is accessorizing.

Accessories give a home its personality and make spaces come to life.  And, since there are so many accessories in the marketplace to choose from, the looks you can create are endless.  But, after years of decorating, there are  5 decorative accessories that stand out as my favorite accessory pieces

1)  Starburst Mirrors

I love how starburst mirrors add dimension and visual interest to a room. And, they are a great alternative to framed artwork.

2) Silver Trays

Whether hung on the wall or used as a tabletop piece, trays, especially silver ones add a touch of glam to a room.  A silver tray is also great to show a grouping of books or decorative objects.

An easy way to add architectural interest to a room is with decorative urns.  Use them to fill bookshelves,  hold plants or as an accent furniture piece.

4) Picture Frames

Oh how I love picture frames!  A grouping of frames on a table surface is great, but I really love a collection of unique frames hung on the wall.  Mix traditional framed photos with eclectic wall art  for a personalized arrangement.

I’m looking forward to attending the I Love Thrifting event here in Atlanta on Saturday, and hope to add a few new home accessories to my mix.  I’ll be sure to share my fabulous thrift shop finds with you next week.

Until then, have a great weekend !

Classic Furniture–Seven Pieces to Covet + one

I’ve worked in the home furnishings industry for many years and despite all the seasonal and trend changes that occur each year,  there are always a handful of classic and timeless furniture styles that never lose their appeal, versatility or beauty.

Styles that simply NEVER go out of style!

How many of these classic styles do you have in your home?

Come back tomorrow when I’ll show you a few of my favorite classic home accessory pieces.

We All Go Through Changes

I am working on a new project, where the homeowners are downsizing into a slightly smaller home, and as part of the move, they’ve decided to completely change the style of their decor.

They are moving from a traditional, formal look with rich colors and tones, to a contemporary, sleek, mostly white decor.  While most people make several style changes during their lifespan, this design change is a big one.

In helping Richard and Henry create the look that they want, I developed a series of concept boards so they could envision their new space. Here’s a peek at a few before photos and inspiration boards, along with some of the design advice I shared with them.

Living Room:  The living room will be all white, with accents of red (a favorite color of the family).  We’ll downplay the wood floors with area rugs and add accessories that give the space personality.

  • In room with a narrow color palette, the finishes and textures you into that space become a critical part of the design.  Make sure every element has a reason for being and that the textures make a statement.
  • When selecting a white paint color for your walls, you MUST sample them first.  White is one of the trickiest colors to work with and can have a variety of undertones that pop out in different light.  Sampling the paint color and viewing it different times of day will help you choose the perfect one for your home and space.
  • Texture will give the space depth and interest, without interfering with the color statement, so it’s important to incorporate it into your design plan.  The best options for adding texture are wall decor, textiles, lighting and accessories.
  • Using a range of paint finishes will provide visual interest and give the wall surfaces more dimension.  We decided to use Sherwin Williams Snowbound (SW7004) on the walls, in an eggshell finish and again on all the trim work, but in a high-gloss finish.  The different finsihes will visually define the walls.

The Kitchen:  In the kitchen I recommended that the cabinets be painted grey, still providing a cool, contemporary feel while giving the space a bit more depth.

  • Contemporary style kitchens work best when the overall look is simple and clean, allowing the finishes, hardware and details to be hero.  I recommended chrome and shiny silver hardware for that visual pop.

The Bedroom:  Wanting their bedroom space to feel totally calming and relaxed, I selected a light grey color for the walls. The headboard will be upholstered in white and the linens will all be white.  We opted for grey faux silk curtain panels in the same tone as the wall to provide texture but keep the space serene.

To give a bedroom real style, pay attention to the details and make them count.  My homeowners wanted major bling to show up in the bedroom so we are doing a silver-leaf treatment on the tray ceiling and adding a stunning crystal chandelier.  Additional style will be added with mirrored night stands, decorative pillows and a white drawer console.

  • Bedrooms are where texture can really make the space come to life.  Texture pillows, rug and the chandelier will give the space interest.
  • Layering is also important in a bedroom–layer your linens and layer your accessories to give the space character and dimension

The Master Bathroom:  Playing off the grey that is being used in the master bedroom, and wanting to make sure the bathroom has its own distinct style, we opted to change the design of the shower, the countertops, hardware and finishes.

  • To create drama in a bathroom, use materials that have alot of character–small glass tiles are a great option for a shower stall and provide an artist quality as well as added dimension
  • Be bold with your hardware and lighting and mirror choices–these are elements that add alot of personality to a bathroom
  • Keep your window treatments simple and classic–roman shades are a great option for bathroom windows

The Home Office:  We are taking an upstairs loft area and turning it into a home office.  A wall will be added with french doors to close off the space.

  • Office areas need to function well and look good in the process.  Make sure you don’t skimp of storage and organization elements because without these, the space will not work well or feel good.
  • Use bookcases to add style to a home office.  Large wall units will give you storage and display space.

And last but not least, we’ll be adding personality pieces to make this home a reflection of the owners.

Whether you’re content with your design style or in the process of changing things up a bit, make sure to add elements that are a reflection of you and your personality.

I’ll be sure to share the finished spaces when we’re all done.

Going For The Gold

I typically lean towards silver finishes when it comes to jewelry and decorative accessories, but lately, I find myself smitten by all the glamorous gold that I’m seeing in the stores.

Maybe it’s because gold tones go so well with the springtime sun, or maybe it’s because gold finishes add a touch of regal elegance to a space.

Whatever the reason, I’m going for the gold this season and loving it.

  3. Evening Gown–Rodarte
  4. Gold Medallion Sandals–Tori Burch

Are you a gold or silver person?  Or do you like to mix it up?

Stripes Make Me Happy!

Have you noticed that stripes are everywhere?

From  Spring fashions….

these knit wrapped trees in Houston, Texas.  Aren’t these just incredible!  Check out the mission behind this trees, here.

And of course, stripes are one of the most stylish ways to add punch to your decor.  Here are a few of my favorite stripe infused spaces.

I love the mix of different stripe widths in this room.  So modern and fresh!

These chair covers are adorable.

The combination of vertical and horizontal stripes give this area lots of visual interest.  A great technique for a large accent wall!

I wonder what’s behind the  pink door?

This chair looks like it would be great for a springtime nap!

Cheerful accessories bring so much life to a room.

Classic!

If you need to infuse a bit of energy into your home, consider stripes!

Cheers!
