10 Ways To Give Your Home a High-End Look

I took the design style quiz over on the decorist.com website and by golly I think they defined my style to T!

Here’s what it said…

You… like eclectic styles at heart with an eye towards integrating more modern looks.

You prefer to mix and match different styles rather than be totally traditional or modern, but you like to use the clean looks of more modern pieces. You love figuring out how to combine different designs into one cohesive whole.

YOU …

  • want your home to be stylish and that is a reflection of you and your overall tastes.
  • like a rustic or natural but refined look to your home.
  • like ethnic accents and a “worldly” look.
  • like warm colors.
  • like bright pops of color or colorful accents.
  • like luxurious materials.
  • like to use texture for visual interest.
  • like to use some traditional gilded or wood accents in your home to give it a sense of timelessness
  • like the look of natural materials in your home

The one thing the quiz failed to pick up on is that I love décor with a high-end look.

When it comes to decorating, I love to mix of budget finds with investment pieces, vintage finds with new pieces, and refined looks with rustic styles.  I don’t think your house has to be filled with expensive décor and furniture to have style, but I do believe there are easy and cost-effective things you can do to give your décor the look of high style .

Design Trend Defined: Boho Chic

Bohemian Style Home2

Did you know that the definition of Boho Chic can be found in the Urban Dictionary?

The term Boho Chic as it relates to clothing is described as a fashion trend that is part bohemian and part chic. It is tied to the vintage phenomenon in fashion where the trend was to bring back vintage styles for the modern era. Boho chic combines organic, colorful, detailed, folk-inspired pieces with simple, modern pieces.

The trend is said to have been started by actress Sienna Miller in 2005 when she wore bohemian-style clothing in the movie Alfie and back then the style was only expected to be around a few years and then fade away.  The boh0 look became a hit and people began to imitate the style and fashion designers took notice.

Shopping Atlanta: Desparate Housewares

I’ve lived in Atlanta for 15 years and just when I think I’ve discovered every vintage shop in the city I stumble across a new one.

Desparate Housewares Storefront

A couple of weeks ago while the hubby and I were out driving I spotted a parking lot filled with outdoor furniture.  The building looked like it was old and I had a feeling what was inside the building was vintage.  I directed my driver to pull into the lot and a large sign reading Desperate Housewares greeted us.   I could tell immediately that this little shop was a gem.

desperate-housewares-17a

Desperate Housewares is quaint little shop which sells vintage, retro and contemporary decor and furniture, antiques, collectibles and of course housewares. In addition to retail sales, the shop also rents pieces for tv shows, films and prop use.

Walking through the store is like walking through a museum dedicated to retro and industrial design.  There were lots of industrial office chairs, typewriters and misc. accessories.  The collection of retro furniture is one of the best I’ve seen.  Since I don’t shop retro often I found many of the prices on the larger items to be a bit high, but they are probably in line with the quality and age of the pieces.

This bench was amazing with a chunky brass base and I even liked the Chartreuse colored fabric.

I spotted this pair of cool retro bar stools that were in min condition.

Desparate Housewares

If you love old chairs, Desperate Housewares had a great selection that could be totally transformed with a new upholstery job and paint.

If you’ve got vintage flamingos on your shopping list you’ll find some of those at this store too!

I love horses and this antique horse tricycle was just stunning but way out of my price range.

I considered purchasing a pair of these bamboo framed mirrors but left them for someone else.

IMG_8707

The shop has a large selection of vintage oil paintings at good prices and with really nice chunky frames.

And their collection of vintage luggage and train cases is amazing.  My mom had one of these vintage Train Cases and I loved it as a kid.

Desperate Housewares has lots of vintage accent furniture and this bamboo piece grabbed my attention.  It would make a great nightstand.

And if you have a thing for lamps like I do, you will be in heaven in this shop. There were shelves upon shelves of vintage ceramic and metal styles.

While my personal design style is not retro, I definitely saw lots of pieces in this shop that could easily mix well with other styles.

I’m loving my new series, Product + Inspiration and I’m really excited to bring you this latest post which marries my love of vintage, brass and trays.

Brass trays are always on my radar whenever I’m antique shopping and in my book they are one of the best values when it comes to vintage decor.  Trays in general top the list of practical and versatile accessories and the list of decorating ideas using trays is endless.

My favorite brass tray style is faux bamboo because of the classic details but if that look is not for you, there are lots of other styles you might run across.

Defining My Accessory Formula (plus design tips)

Have you ever looked around your home and discovered that you have an accessory formula?  I know I have a definite design style, Eclectic Glam but I didn’t fully recognize that I have a ‘formula’ when it comes to the accessories that I decorate with.  My formula is a combination of classic styling, pops of color, graphic patterns, lots of black, touches of gold, texture and more design books then you can imagine.  Here’s a visual of what my accessory formula looks like and a little bit about why I gravitate towards some of these elements.

Slide1

Bold lighting is one of my favorite ways to create visual impact in a room and I love the drama that a black lampshade gives a space.  Tip: the diameter of the bottom of the shade should not be greater than the height of the lamp body (to the bottom of the socket).

When it comes to mirror styles, starburst mirrors are at the top of my list.  You can hang larger starburst mirrors by themselves or hang smaller mirrors in the center of a large rectangular or square mirror to create dimensional decor. Starburst mirrors are also great to incorporate into a gallery wall display.

Colorful artwork is my artwork of choice.  I have lots of original black art that my mom brought back from a trip to Africa and definitely adds a personal touch to my decor.  I prefer watercolors or more traditional art but abstract is slowly growing on me.  Tip: in general, when hanging art over a piece of furniture it should not be longer than the width of the furniture.  You want the art and the furniture piece to feel balanced.

I am a confessed pillow addict and have more than my fair share.  I love mixing graphic patterned pillows with solid textures or florals, and that pillows are an inexpensive way to change the look of my decor each season.  Tip:  always buy pillow inserts one or two sizes larger than the pillow cover so that your pillow is plush and full.

Baskets are my friend.  I used them not only as decor but for organization in every room.

My rule of thumb when it comes to decorative accessories is buy what you love and you’ll always find a place for it.  I love decorative boxes, vintage pieces and always try to incorporate a whimsical accent into my decor.  Tip: when decorating tabletops, group accessories in odd numbers.  The basic idea of the rule is that details and objects that are arranged or grouped in odd numbers are more appealing, memorable, and effective than even-numbered pairings.

Over the year I’ve tried decorating in neutrals and more muted colors and every time I’ve felt uneasy.  I love color and use it to add a signature feel to my decor.  Tip:  decorate with the colors you wear and your decor will feel a stronger connection to your decor.  If you want to learn more about the impact of color in your life, here’s a great article.

When it’s all said and done, my accessory formula is definitely a reflection of my personality!

When you look around your house, can to tell if you have an accessory formula that guides you when decorating?

My Fall Centerpiece

Even though I don’t do a ton of fall decorating, I usually build a centerpiece statement for my dining table.  This year it was a use what you have decorating project so all it took was trip to the garage, washing some glass pieces and a little faux bois wrapping paper.

I love using wrapping paper for a table runner and this faux wood grain paper is perfect for a fall tablescape.

Whenever I create a centerpiece arrangement I always use items that will add texture and I always create layers.  I used several of my vintage trophy urns to elevate pumpkins and to hold small containers of mums.  Instead of using all one color of pumpkin, I used a variety which gives the centerpiece lots of depth.

My collection of cloches and glass domes is ever-growing and they are great to use on the table.

Pumpkins perched on top of urns and under glass create the layered look I love.

classic barn gooseneck barn light with a copper finish

Lighting can be one of the most expensive hardware elements you can purchase for your home plus looking at the thousand of lighting options available in stores and online can be daunting.  One of the tricks that I like to use when I’m decorating an interior space is to look at lighting that is not typically meant for indoors.  There are some really fabulous outdoor lighting fixtures that can be used inside the home and one of my favorite style options are  barn lights.
