One of my missions on the blog is to share design advice and decorating tips to help you decorate your home in style.  A few years ago I started a series called Design Guide which covers a range of topics related to design and decorating.  Today’s Best of ConfettiStyle post highlights many of the design guides I’ve written so far.  I hope these design guides give you the information and confidence you need to make your decor dreams come true.

Design Guide: The Art Of Layering Area Rugs

Design Guide: Layering Rugs by ConfettiStyle

Layering rugs is something you see a lot in room designs.  Layered rugs add warmth, dimension and texture and can help to define seating areas.  A beautiful patterned rug can look amazing when placed atop wall-to-wall carpeting (or a larger area rug).

Here are the rules of thumb to follow when layering rugs along with some PROS and CONS to consider.

Decorating with Rugs

RULES OF THUMB:

  • Layering works best when a pattern is placed over a solid or subtle patterned rug or a natural fiber rug.
  • Allow a minimum of 18″ to 24″ of wall-to-wall carpet to be exposed underneath an accent rug.  The solid rug will act as a frame for the patterned rug.
  • In large rooms, multiple rugs can be layered to define different seating areas or furniture groupings.
  • To avoid bunching and rippling, the bottom rug should have a pile of 1/2″ or less.
  • In most cases, using a carpet-to-carpet pad will ensure that the layering rug stays in place and doesn’t crawl. RugPadUSA is my favorite source for high-quality pads for all types of flooring.

Layering rugs, like layering clothes, adds texture, color, and dimension. The effect is “calm and warm,” says interior designer Suzanne Rheinstein, owner of Hollyhock, a Los Angeles home store.

PROS OF LAYERING:

  • In large rooms, layered rugs can help to physically and visually warm up the space.
  • In high traffic areas or main living spaces, layering a rug over light colored wall-to-wall carpeting can be a great way to protect it from spills and stains.
  • Layered rugs can cushion hard surface floors like  concrete or tile.
  • Rugs are a great way to create a focal point within large open rooms. Positioning rugs at an angle can also be used to direct traffic flow within a room.
  • Use rugs to add a pop of pattern and color to help bring a room to life.
  • Layering rugs can save your money.  Rather than splurge on a large oriental, use a solid colored sisal or jute as the under layer and add a smaller version of the patterned rug on top.  You’ll still get the benefit of the design without the added cost.
  • Layering a patterned rug over carpeingt is a great design solution for someone renting a home or apartment with less than perfect wall-to-wall carpet.

“I like the warm, deep-comfort look of smaller rugs laid right on top of wall-to-wall carpet. The smaller rug could be a bigger-scale pattern…or a needlepoint, or a beautiful Oriental,” said Billy Baldwin (1903-1984), in Billy Baldwin Decorates (1972).

Bedroom Decor

CONS OF LAYERING:

  • Layering over higher pile carpet can cause the top rug to buckle and create a trip hazard.  If you want to decorate with a plush rug like a shag, use it as the top layering rug.
  • Layering multiple patterns together can create that “I ran out of rug” look if not done correctly!  The trick…use different patterns in a similar scale and lay rugs at different angles.

When done right, layered rugs can look great. In the right situation, decorating with multiple rugs is a good way to add style and personality to your decor.  What do you think of this design trend?

Defining My Accessory Formula (plus design tips)

Have you ever looked around your home and discovered that you have an accessory formula?  I know I have a definite design style, Eclectic Glam but I didn’t fully recognize that I have a ‘formula’ when it comes to the accessories that I decorate with.  My formula is a combination of classic styling, pops of color, graphic patterns, lots of black, touches of gold, texture and more design books then you can imagine.  Here’s a visual of what my accessory formula looks like and a little bit about why I gravitate towards some of these elements.

Slide1

Bold lighting is one of my favorite ways to create visual impact in a room and I love the drama that a black lampshade gives a space.  Tip: the diameter of the bottom of the shade should not be greater than the height of the lamp body (to the bottom of the socket).

When it comes to mirror styles, starburst mirrors are at the top of my list.  You can hang larger starburst mirrors by themselves or hang smaller mirrors in the center of a large rectangular or square mirror to create dimensional decor. Starburst mirrors are also great to incorporate into a gallery wall display.

Colorful artwork is my artwork of choice.  I have lots of original black art that my mom brought back from a trip to Africa and definitely adds a personal touch to my decor.  I prefer watercolors or more traditional art but abstract is slowly growing on me.  Tip: in general, when hanging art over a piece of furniture it should not be longer than the width of the furniture.  You want the art and the furniture piece to feel balanced.

I am a confessed pillow addict and have more than my fair share.  I love mixing graphic patterned pillows with solid textures or florals, and that pillows are an inexpensive way to change the look of my decor each season.  Tip:  always buy pillow inserts one or two sizes larger than the pillow cover so that your pillow is plush and full.

Baskets are my friend.  I used them not only as decor but for organization in every room.

My rule of thumb when it comes to decorative accessories is buy what you love and you’ll always find a place for it.  I love decorative boxes, vintage pieces and always try to incorporate a whimsical accent into my decor.  Tip: when decorating tabletops, group accessories in odd numbers.  The basic idea of the rule is that details and objects that are arranged or grouped in odd numbers are more appealing, memorable, and effective than even-numbered pairings.

Over the year I’ve tried decorating in neutrals and more muted colors and every time I’ve felt uneasy.  I love color and use it to add a signature feel to my decor.  Tip:  decorate with the colors you wear and your decor will feel a stronger connection to your decor.  If you want to learn more about the impact of color in your life, here’s a great article.

When it’s all said and done, my accessory formula is definitely a reflection of my personality!

When you look around your house, can to tell if you have an accessory formula that guides you when decorating?

Inspiration {plus a design tip}

Just about every design project I work on involves a TV and there is always a challenge of making it less of a big black box and more of a decorative statement.   I recently came stumbled across this photo and fell in love with the simple wood plank treatment that the TV was mounted on.  The TV instantly goes from ordinary to outstanding when mounted on the wood.

Design Tip:  Accessorize above, below and around you TV so that the focus is no longer the TV but the beautiful decorative statement you’ve created.

Design Details: Chevron Flooring

Years ago hardwood flooring became the #1 flooring choice over carpeting, but the look of hardwood can be elevated to a new level when laid in a chevron pattern.

I adore chevron pattern hardwoods for so many reasons:

*  they add visual interest to a room

*  they can make a room seem wider and longer

*  they add “pattern” that easily replaces what you’d get from an area rug

*  they’re beautiful

*  they’re a work of art

*  And, beyond wood, a chevron pattern floor can be created in all types of materials like brick, tile, marble and of course paint.

Here’s a round-up of Chevron Flooring to inspire and delight you!  And, while you’re checking out these images, take note of the decor in the rooms shown.  There are some beautiful details…furniture pieces, accessorizing, wall colors and lighting that I’m sure will be an inspiration to you too!

Enjoy!

One Room Challenge: Week 3 | Progress and Pretty Details

Fall 2019 One Room Challenge--Week 3 by ConfettiStyle

Well, we made it to Week 3 of the One Room Challenge( ORC) and I’m happy to say that things are moving along…slowly but moving.  In case you missed it, during Week 1, I shared before photos of our bedroom and my goals for the space.

Last week I shared the mood boards and solicited your help in picking a wallpaper design.  Many of you cast your vote and it was kind of a toss up between the two choices.  I”m excited to share which pattern I picked but you’ll have to wait for the final reveal to find out.

Fall 2019 One Room Challenge--Week 3 Design Details

Heading into Week 3, I wanted to get a few things checked off the to-do list and Mr. Confetti and I were able to do just that.

The first thing we did was  clear out the room to put the area rug down.  After a few attempts to get it to lay flat, I ended up buying this carpet-to-carpet rug pad and it solved all of the creeping issues.

The rug I’m using in the room has a grey background with an off-white grid design.  I love the graphic pattern and how good it works with the wallpaper and furniture I have in the room.  This rug is definitely one of the best budget-friendly purchases I’ve made for our home. It’s from Home Depot and the 8′ x 10′ is under $200.

I know many of you have probably had challenges placing an area rug over wall-to-wall carpet so next week I’ll be sharing a Design Guide with tips and resources that will help resolve the common issues.

Next on the to-do list was getting the TV hung on the wall. I have someone coming out this afternoon to do that so I’ll be able to officially check that off the list.

I’m planning to create a gallery wall grouping to surround the TV and have been shopping for the perfect art pieces. The goal is to take the focus off the TV and add more personality into the room.  Here’s a look at the design board I created for the wall.

Fall 2019 One Room Challenge--Design Details

So far all of the artwork I’m looking at is from Etsy and most of the pieces have a modern/contemporary vibe.   While many of the elements in the room lean traditional, I think using modern art in the room will be a nice style mix.  Once I decide on the final frame layout and images I’ll share the Etsy shops with you.

How To Mix Design Styles by ConfettiStyle

The final thing I checked off the list was probably the most exciting.  My upholsterer delivered my bench.  Isn’t it a beauty?

I’ve coveted this Jamil Leopard print fabric for years and was lucky to score several yards from a friend that was moving out of state.  The bolt has been sitting in my office for over a year and I’m so excited to finally have a piece upholstered in this fabric.

That’s a wrap for Week 3 of the One Room Challenge.  So far I’m loving how the room is coming along but there is still lots to do.

Valentine's Day Gift Wrap Inspiration by ConfettiStyle

Once you’ve purchased your gift you’ll want to wrap them to make them extra special.  This year I’m sticking to traditional colors–red & white and keeping my wrap fun and impactful. Here are two Valentine’s Day gift wrap ideas that you can pull together in a flash.

Similar chipboard letters here

The foundation of my wrap is a tone-on-tone white striped paper.  I wanted the paper to have a little dimension and this fit the bill perfectly.  After I wrapped the boxes, I added a few embellishments.

I wrapped the first box with red & white twine and laced the ends through a paper heart with holes punched in the center.  I made the heart from decorative scrapbook paper using a  template I downloaded here. The plaid heart gives this gift a slightly more masculine feel and I love the pattern mixing that all the elements create.

tip:  look in the wedding section of big box stores for beautiful and elegant white wrapping paper.

Valentine's Day Gift Wrap Inspiration by ConfettiStyle

For the second gift, I wrapped striped ribbon around the center of the box and tied a bow along one edge. Next I decorated the top of the box with large chipboard spelling out XOXO.  I painted the letters with red acrylic paint before attaching them to the box with double-sided tape.

I just love how my Valentine’s gift wrap turned out.  I hope these ideas will encourage you to put a little heart & love into making your gifts extra special for the ones you love!
