Product + Inspiration: Layered Doormats For A Stylish Entrance

 via Studio McGee

Hi friends.  It’s been a while since I’ve done a Product + Inspiration post so I’m popping in today to talk about decorating your front door area.

Often times when we’re decorating our homes, we are so focused on the interior that we forget about the exterior.  Flower pots and window boxes are a great way to add visual interest to the exterior of your home.  And a wreath on the front door creates a welcoming feeling for guests.  There’s also another decorative statement that I’m loving lately and it’s the idea of layered door mats!  Layering a door mat over a decorative indoor/outdoor rug is an easy {and budget friendly} way to UpStyle your entrance.

A quick search around the web and I rounded up a handful of doormat and outdoor rug combos I think you’ll love.

No. 1–Home Sweet Home +   Interlocking Grid:  The Home Sweet Home Doormat is a classic and pairs beautifully with an outdoor rug that has a more modern design like this grid pattern.

No. 2–Hello + Tropical FlowerThis teal door mat and tropical floral rug is perfect for spring and summer.  When fall rolls around you can easily switch out the floral rug for one with more fall colors.

No. 3–Welcome + Zebra:  I’ve never met an animal print that I don’t love and this outdoor zebra rug is a winner.  Paired with this classic ‘Welcome’ mat and you’ve got a chic look for your front door.

No. 4–Navy Floral  + Yellow Stripe:  This floral and stripe combo is fun while still be traditional.  I love the punch of color this pairing would add at the door.

No. 5– Stripe+ Black & Ivory Lattice:  If preppy is more your style, this striped doormat and quatrefoil rug combo is for you.  tip:  you can easily diy a striped doormat in about 5 minutes and for less than $8.00 like I did here.

No. 6– Petals + Tan Lattice:  I love pairing floral patterns and graphic designs and this combo is my favorite.

Tips For Layering Your Doormat

  1.  Most doormats are 18″ x 30″ so a 2′ x 3′ rug will work great as the under layer.  If you have a larger entrance or french doors, buy a larger doormat and use a 3′ x 5′ rug under it.  Whatever size doormat and rug you buy, make sure the rug frames the smaller doormat and leaves enough pattern exposed around the sides to give your entrance visual impact.
  2. Look for outdoor rugs with a lower profile (flat cotton weaves work great) so that you don’t create a tripping hazard once the doormat and rug are layered.
  3. When selecting your combo, pair a classic design with a more decorative pattern.  Doing this will give you more versatility and make it easy to switch out just one of pieces to change the look seasonally.

So, do you like the look of layered doormats and which combo would you pick for your home?

Product + Inspiration: Sinnerlig Pendant Light

It’s been quite a while since my last Product + Inspiration post so I’m back today with an item that I’m sure you’re going to love.  Like so many of my previous P+I posts, I’m featuring an item from Ikea.  I know that Ikea is not for everyone but when styled right, their inexpensive pieces can look like a million bucks.

The Product…

The Sinnerlig Pendant Light is one of my favorite lighting pieces from Ikea. I’m seeing it pop up more and more on Instagram so I know it’s a fave of others too. While the pendant has a bohemian vibe to it, the design is versatile enough to work with a variety of decor style. And the oversized scale makes it perfect for hanging as a single light fixture or in multiples.

The Sinnerlig comes in a natural color but if that doesn’t work for you, you can  spray paint the shade like some folks have done. And you can’t beat the $59.99 price tag which makes this a very affordable design find.   Let’s take a look at some inspiring spaces showcasing this light fixture shall we…

Product + Inspiration: Frame-able Botanical Art

Framed botanical prints are one of my favorite wall decor statements, especially when hung in a grouping of 6 or more.  A larger grouping can be beautiful on a living room, dining room or foyer wall.

Building a collection of framed art pieces can get costly unless you use a designer trick and clip your images from an art book.

Oversized coffee tables books are a great resources for inexpensive artwork and there are even books on the market designed specifically with framing in mind.

Here’s a round-up of my favorite books with frame-able botanical art and some design inspiration to inspire you.

Spring is a great time to freshen up your wall decor and inexpensive art books will give you get a lot of bang for your buck.

TIPS FOR CREATING A DYNAMIC BOTANICAL ART WALL

************************

♦  Use a single frame style and color to create visual consistency within the art arrangement

♦  Use a frame with simple details so the frame doesn’t compete with the images

♦  If you’re using a mat with your frames, a simple white mat will look best with most botanical images.

♦  In most cases, you want to hang your images no wider than 3 inches apart on all sides.  The smaller the images, the closer the frames.  The larger the images, the wider the spacing.

Product + Inspiration: Blue & White Garden Stools

via

One of my favorite accent furniture pieces is a garden stool.  Specifically blue and white garden stools.

As the popularity of chinoiserie and blue and white decor has gained steam over the last few years, so has the use of garden stools as a decorative accent.

If you’ve never considered a garden stool as part of your decor, let me tell you why they are a great design option.

Product + Inspiration: Decor Meets Christmas Tree

When I teach a holiday decorating workshop, the question always comes up about whether your tree decor needs to match your room decor.  My response is NO but for a truly cohesive look its best if your everyday decor inspires your tree decor.

Take a cue from the tips you use to decorate a room in your home.  You start with one or two key elements (art, rug, curtains) and use those as the building blocks to create the overall design.  When it comes to decorating your Christmas tree, find inspiration within your decor and use that to build the theme for your tree.

Here are 3 holiday tree designs and the accessory and furniture pieces that could have inspired them…

to-all-2

♦♦♦

Product + Inspiration: Decor meets Christmas Tree

This is the Christmas tree I’d create if my inspiration was colorful and bohemian inspired space.  The gold accents play off of the gold finish on the furniture and the bold mix of colors tie back to the textiles within the room. During the holidays, sparkly details are a must and a grouping of beautiful mercury glass candle holders would inspired the ornaments, ribbon and giftwrap I’d use.

Product + Inspiration: Decor meets Christmas Tree

If I were decorating a Christmas tree based on decor that included classic holiday colors like red, white and green, it would look like this. The varying shades green found in the jars and artwork,  along with whimsical details like the fur pillow would inspire the ornaments and ribbon used on the tree.

Shop these items: Charlotte 3-Drawer Campaign Chest // Red Rhododendron Framed Prints // Oversized Wine Bottle
Reese Velvet Ottoman // Mongolian Faux Fur Pillow

Product + Inspiration: Decor meets Christmas Tree

A neutral color palette relies on texture, a variety of finishes and a subtle graduation of color to bring it to life.  This elegant and glam Christmas tree would be inspired by a mix of gold and silver decorative elements, antique surfaces, lots of visual texture and shimmery finishes.

Shop these items: Carys Hurricane Table Lamp // Diana Accent Table // Moravia Wall Mirror
Holston Area Rug // Baylee Aluminum Accent Table

So the question still remains–which comes first, the chicken or the egg.  In the case of holiday decor, take a look around your home and let the pieces you live with everyday inspire you!

Product + Inspiration: Metallic Contact Paper

Contact Paper.003

I think this post is really going to spark your creativity because the product is inexpensive and the ideas for its use are endless.

I’ve used contact paper forever to line drawers, cabinets and even to line decorative trays.  Over the years, contact paper has evolved and now comes in beautiful designs, pretty patterns and decor-friendly looks.  It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I became away that contact paper now comes in metallic finishes.  Gold, silver, pewter and brass to be exact.

Armed with this knowledge, my creative wheels started spinning and I went looking for design inspiration. Here’s just a few of the contact paper projects I spotted on Pinterest.

To create something exceptional, your mindset must be relentlessly focused on the smallest detail. ~Giorgio Armani.

How gorgeous is this gold striped ceiling created by Grace at A Storied Style?  So much easier than paint and a whole lot quicker to apply too!  You can see the entire space here.

This idea is brilliant!  Let’s say you own a rental property with dated appliances or your appliances only have a bit of life left in them but you want to update the look of your kitchen.  Cover the surface with faux stainless contact paper like Julie Blanner did.

Here’s another great use of metallic contact paper–a temporary backsplash in the kitchen.  You won’t believe these countertops are done with contact paper.

If you’re thinking contact paper is just for basic projects, this gem mirror from A Beautiful Mess proves you wrong.  #stunning

So whose ready to go shopping for metallic contact paper?   Art stores like Dick Blick carry some metallic papers but I found the best source to be Amazon. They carry all of the metallic finishes and the prices are better than most stores.

Product + Inspiration: Cloth Napkin Pillow Covers

Cloth Dinner Napkins.002

When we purchased our first home in Seattle years ago we didn’t have a lot of money to spend on decorating it.  One day when walking through a department store I picked up a pack of cloth dinner napkins that were on clearance.  The pattern was what caught my attention at first but as I opened the napkins up, I remember thinking that they would make great pillow covers.  Fast forward to today and cloth napkin pillow covers are still one of my ‘design on a dime’ decorating tips.

If you’ve never thought about using cloth napkins to make pillow covers, let me tell you why it’s a good idea:

♦  Most cloth napkins are sized perfectly for pillows–18″ x 18″ or 20″ x 20″ which means standard pillow inserts will fit.

♦  Cloth napkins are already hemmed so there is no cutting on your part.

♦  Cloth napkins are inexpensive so you can make seasonal pillow changes without breaking the bank.

♦  Many big box stores (Pottery Barn, World Market, Target) sell napkins in the same prints that they sell in their pillow collection so you can have the same look for a fraction of the price.

♦  Napkin pillow covers are simple to sew or you can use fabric glue to make the pillow covers if you don’t have a sewing machine or don’t know how to sew.

♦  You can add decorative trim to your napkin pillow covers to UpStyle the look even more.

Now let’s get to the inspiration part of the post and check out some pillow covers made using cloth napkin…
