Daily Dose of Design–Creative Wall Decor

Today’s daily dose of design is all about unique wall decor, one of the easiest ways to personalize your home!

Whenever I’m working on a design project, I love looking beyond traditional framed art to decorate the walls.  Mirror groupings, framed fabrics and decorative plate collections are a few of my favorite wall decor statements.

If you want to do something unique with your walls, keep these tips in mind:

  • A grouping of items can feel more custom than a single or double pair or artwork.  Use a mix of wall decor items to really make the statement personal.

  • Shaped mirrors, hung as a collection will not only enhance the light within the room, but will expand the visual size of the space.

  • Decorative plates are an inexpensive way to add drama to your walls.  And, in a pinch, you can take them down and use them for serving.

  • Framing wallpaper or fabric pieces is a great way to infuse patternwork into your wall decor statement.  Framing a pattern or two used in other parts of the room (pillows, window treatments), will tie your look together.

  • Be Creative–Just about anything can be used as wall decor, and the more creative your look, the more style your home will have.

Here are some additional images of fabulous wall decor looks.  I hope you’re inspired!

I love using empty frames as wall decor.  Whether your hang something inside the frame (above), or leave them empty you’ll create a great look.

I really love the photo below where all the frames have been painted white–a great way to unify different frame styles.

Framed botanicals look great when hung in mass. And for a bit of added style, the candle sconces were added to the mix.

Gift Giving Ideas!

It’s official…the holiday shopping season is here!  As someone who shops (practices retail therapy), and has spent endless hours looking for that perfect gift, I wanted to share a few of my gift ideas with you.   These gift ideas will really come in handy when you have some hard-to-buy for people on your list.  I have used these gift ideas when shopping for my brother, “the techie”, or my darling husband, “the whatever guy”, and have seen some pretty big smiles on their faces.

 FAVORITE THINGS GIFT

As one of  Oprah’s all-time fans, I took her favorite things ideas and purchased a selection of small gifts, all “favorite things” of the gift recipient.  My husband loves to play tennis, so one year I got him gifts that were all tennis related.  I wrapped everything and placed all the gifts in a tennis racket case.  The gift tag simply said, “Geno’s Favorite Things.”

GIFT CARD GLEE

Last year, when I really wanted to watch my pennies, but still wanted unique gifts for my family, I purchased a selection of gift cards for everyone on my list.  Most of the gift cards were $5.00 or $10.00, and all were from stores I knew they loved to shop.  I placed all the gift cards in burlap stockings that I handmade.

TOWER OF POWER

I love to give gifts that have a theme to them and place the items in a tower of boxes.  One year, I gave a friend a “dress-to-impress” gift. One box contained a necklace, another box contained a pair of earrings, and a third box contained a bracelet.   I made the jewelry myself so that was an added little gift.

A PERSONAL TOUCH

I love personalized items, and this year, I plan to give gifts that are all personalized.  For the men on my list, I plan to have wallets embossed with an initial.  Other personalized  items I’m looking at are monogrammed throw blankets and embroidered initial pillows.  I really like gifting with personalized items because there are so many options to choose from.  And, I  plan to even personalized my gift wrap.

HEAD OF THE CLASS

Don’t you just love how headboards are really becoming statement pieces in a bedroom?

I love the trend of upholstered headboards and how one can give a traditional bedroom design a fresh, modern feel. But, if you  happen not to be an upholstered headboard convert, there are lots of other wonderful design alternatives that pack jump as much punch.

DESIGN CRUSH: BARCLAY BUTERA

 Barclay Butera

Barclay Butera is one designer I think possesses a unique set of design skills.  His ability to combine fabrics and textures is unparalleled; his sense of color is outstanding; his approach to accessorizing a room is wonderful; and his design philosophy of “in Interior Design there are no rules” is admirable.

Barclay Butera, in my eyes, is one of the most talented designers out there.

Barclay grew up in the design business, working alongside his mother.  As she traveled the world designing homes for clients, Barclay was by her side, obviously learning every aspect of the design business.  His natural talent and design sense, along with the technical skills he surely adopted from his mother gave him the foundation to create is own design firm at the age of 25.

Whenever you see a photo of Barclay, it is obvious that he has a strong love for fashion, and that love makes its way into the rooms he designs. He has become known for creating “fashion for the home.”

Here’s a look at a few of the rooms in his Newport Beach, Ca. home…

The grass cloth on the wall and shell framed mirror bring a bit of the beach vibe indoors, but in a sophisticated way.

His love for British Colonial design is obvious in every room of his home. I love the infusion of cobalt blue in this space.

Obviously an admirer of woven and rattan materials, he’s used the chair, oversized ottoman and rug to provided added visual interest to this space.

I love how he takes a classic blue and white color palette and gives it a new and refreshing vibe. The blue and white Chinoiserie ginger jars and wall paper give this space such personality.  And the zebra bench is so gorgeous.

To further enhance his design work, Barclay has developed a custom line of furniture pillows, rugs, accessories and artwork.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces from his line…

Barclay has a real love for animal prints, and you’ll see it used in just about every room he designs.

His designs are classic, yet modern!  I love the silhouette of this sofa and the refined stripe pattern.

How stunning would a pair of these pillows look of a bed draped in linen and a creamy matelassé fabric?

If you want a touch of Barclay Butera  in your home everyday, pick up one of the candles from his signature candle line.  So Fab!

One of the best design books I’ve ever seen, Living in Style is absolutely exquisite and a must for anyone that loves interior design.

Check out more of his work, at the Barclay Butera website here!

SLEEPING BEAUTY

When it comes to decorating, a bedroom can be one of my biggest design challenges.  While it is easy to infuse luxury through plush linens and pillows, or by painting the walls a soothing color, I am often challenged with creating a space that is truly personal, full of style and totally functional.  Here are a few of my inspired spaces.

I hope your resting place is all you want it to be!

A toned down color statement gives this bedroom a luxurious and elegant feel.  The patterns, texture and attention to detail add so much character!

The rich tones used in this bedroom are so inviting…I just want to jump under the covers and drift off to sleep!

Who ever said white is not a color was surely mistaken.  This bedroom is so peaceful and serene.  The washed and weathered finishes are just as comforting as an afternoon nap on a rainy day!

Black and white with a pop of color.  I just adore the hot pink accent in this black and white bedroom.  The monogrammed pillow makes the space personal and intimate.  The leather ottoman, being used as a night stand, is extra stylish with the addition of the silver tray and crystal lamp.

The guest bedroom says Come, Sit, Relax!  The oversized headboard makes a grand statement and I love the addition of the accent chairs at the foot of the bed.  The is one bedroom that is a bit rustic, but very refined!

Pretty in Pink!  This bedroom looks like it was plucked from a fine hotel.  The soft pink palette mixed with black and white is sophisticated and playful at the same time.  I think the drapes add softness without taking away from the bed and the monogrammed nightstand is oh so chic!
