Today we are talking lamps.  Unique lamps to be specific.  Have you ever made your own DIY lamp or thought about having a lamp made using a favorite decorative piece?  If you are looking for a unique, one-of-a-kind lamp this just might be an idea for you.

You could turn a ceramic ginger jar into a lamp like this…

Overlays–An Easy Furniture Update

I’ve always said that paint is the cheapest and easiest way to update a room and now I can add Overlays are the easiest way to update a piece of furniture. Overlays came on the radar a couple of years ago and took the design and DIY industry by storm.  The lightweight fret work panels easy to work with, are available in lots of designs and are one of the easiest ways to transform and piece of furniture.

And what’s not to love about overlays to dress up a basic parsons table.  Brilliant.

I’ve got a project or two my to-do list this year where I want to use Overlays.  I’m excited to give them a try…not if I could only pick from the wide range of styles.

To see the full Overlay product line head to their website. And make sure to check our their inspiration gallery…mind blowing!

Sun, Sand and Crafting

Hello there! Today I wanted to share my trip last week to the CHA show in Los Angeles.  I had an awesome time and it was the perfect new adventure to start the year off.  The Craft and Hobby Association show is like the super bowl of crafting.  All of the industries leading product manufacturers, designers and craft talents come together for a 4 day show that’s all about the creative and crafting industry.  Major companies like Plaid, Fiskars, Cricut and Scotch are there with new product introductions and demonstrations on all the crafting items they sell.  In addition to the these heavy hitters, there are paper companies, scrapbook companies, rubber stamp companies, jewelry supply manufacturers and anything else related to the craft industry.

I had the great pleasure of being asked by Craffiti, a leading rubber stamp and embossing plate manufacturer here in Georgia to attend the show as their creative artist.   I’ve created projects for Craffiti for a few months and was thrilled when they extended the invitation.

Once we landed in Los Angeles, Sheila, Christy, Amanda and I headed to our hotel.  We stayed at the Anabella, a cute boutique hotel which is located right next door to the convention center and across the street from Disneyland. It was the perfect location and the surrounding area was so pretty.

The street in front of the hotel was lined with beautiful palm trees and at night you could see the Ferris Wheel at Disneyland all lit up.

The booth set-up was next on our agenda.

The display included this giant board featuring examples of the stamp and embossing products Craffiti makes and some cards and gifts tags I created using their embossing plates.

The pink tutu table skirt was a big hit at the show!

Once the booth was set up we had a few hours on our hands and decided to head to the beach for some lunch and a walk in the sand. One of the things I was hoping to do this trip was to walk in the sand and put my feet in the ocean. After living on the west coast for so many years, I miss the beauty of the Pacific Ocean.  Huntington Beach, the 80 degree weather and the SUN was heavenly!

The CHA show started on Saturday and boy was it a crafting fest.

IMG_4736

Scotch had all of their Expressions washi tapes, masking tapes and packing tapes on display.  So many cute designs to choose from.

IMG_4737

My favorite ribbon company May Arts was there and I got to check out their entire ribbon line.  Such goodness!

IMG_4691

There were so many creative craft projects on display.  This wreath, using Jillibean Soup Wood Sprinkles was one of my favorites.

Just one of the many beautiful paper collage art pieces I saw.  So inspiring!

IMG_7767

One of my favorite crafting companies, Me and My Big Ideas had a new line of Mambistick stickers that are awesome.  I can’t wait to use them in a project.  I’m envisioning a fun gallery wall something like this.

How cute is this wreath using decorative paper cards?

IMG_7768

There were hundreds of booths at the CHA show and some of them really stood out to me.   I loved this space set up like a crafting room.

IMG_7770

Spellbinders had one of the most amazing booths at the show.  It was decorated like a vintage parlour with stunning displays featuring Gilded Life jewelry products.

This banner has me thinking about a burlap and bling Christmas theme for 2014 🙂

A Gilded Life necklace.  We were able to make a similar one for free during the show.

In addition to seeing so many great craft projects and ideas, I also loved checking out new crafting machines and tools.  This Ad Tech glue gun is on my shopping list.  It’s a dual function glue gun that operates both with batteries and electric and it has a built-in stand that allows the gun to stand upright.

IMG_4688

And then there was the Fiskars  AdvantEdge Punch System.  After seeing this machine in person I’m in love.  It uses decorative cartridges to create a continuous border punch.  I’m using this machine for my next gift wrap inspiration post that will be coming up later this week on the blog.

IMG_4676

And if crystals are your thing, CHA had them on display in full force.  A company called Crystal Ninja turns everyday items in to works of art using their crystals.  You have to check out their website to see more of the amazing things they create.

So can you see what I mean by crafting super bowl?   The CHA show was such an awesome experience, representing Craffiti, being creativity energized and connecting with new people.  I look forward to attending the show next year but until then I’ll be using many of the new items I saw at the show in my crafting post throughout the year.  I’m ready to get crafty, how about you?

FIVE Gifts to Give in the New Year

Coming off Christmas, the pinnacle of gift giving can stifle your creativity when it comes to giving gifts during other times of the year.  I love to give gifts and pulled together 5 of my favorite gifts to give any month, week or day of the year.

Slide1

Books are one of my favorite gifts to give (and receive) and it just so happens that this stack includes four of my favorite design titles that make the perfect gift for someone who love design and beautiful things.
The Perfectly Imperfect Home,
Domino–The Book of Decorating
Design Sponge at Home
Decorate
I learned about Sugar Paper last year and have fallen madly in love with all of their products.  This Sassy Note Set from Sugar Paper would be a great gift to give to mom, a friend, co-worker or blogging bestie.  p.s. Sugar Paper also carries beautiful gift wrap, gifts and holiday products.
Does music sooth your soul like it does mine.  I love to listen to music and vow to turn the TV off more this year and turn up the tunes.  Music is a great gift for him or her and can come in the form of a CD, vintage album or a I-tunes gift card.  Jazz music is one of my faves and this list of the 100 Greatest Jazz Albums ever created is a great resource when gift giving.
I am a paper addict and one of my obsessions is journals. I love the idea of a book of blank pages just waiting for words, ideas, pictures and inspiration.  A journal is a great gift, especially at the start of a new year with a note encouraging the gift recipient to jot down their hearts desire!  These cute polka dot journals which I love also because they are call Gold Confetti can be found at Target.
Have you ever thought about giving the gift of a class to someone?  It’s a great idea and one that I love.  Find a class related to a hobby or skill that the person enjoys or has always wanted to try and give a gift of real inspiration!  I’m excited to take a calligraphy class this year…a little gift to myself!

Decorating with Fur

It’s become a ritual.
Whenever I go to Ikea I start at the front of the store and snake my way through each of the departments only to find myself in the rug department “petting” the sheepskin rug they sell.
You know the rug, the white fluffy one that makes you want to just snuggle with it like you were a 5-year-old.
I can’t help myself.
I’ve picked up that rug so many times and asked myself the question that runs through my head at least 127 times a day, “what could I do with this?”
I know one, maybe two of those rugs are meant to be in my life so I had to go hunting for some design inspiration to help me figure out how me and this rug could live in harmony together.
If you’ve ever picked up this rug and asked the ‘what would I do’ question, here’s your answer…
