I met Jennifer a few years ago and immediately felt her warm and genuine spirit.  Since that time our friendship has blossomed and I have become one of Jennifer’s biggest fans. As a designer, she has an eye for detail, can accessorize a room like no other and designs rooms that exude the ultimate in comfort and luxury.  One of the things I really love most about Jennifer’s design style is her ability to mix old and new and modern with vintage, creating spaces that feel collected, personal and timeless.  And if you need some fashion inspiration, Jennifer has impeccable personal style with a love for vintage fashion.

Recently I posed a few questions to Jennifer so that we can learn a little more about her and take a look behind her blog, Vreeland Road.

Grab a cup of coffee of let’s chat with Jennifer and take a look at more of her work…

How did you get into the interior design field? And what do you love most about design?

My career began after the purchase of our first home in Roswell. It was my first canvas and I went to work creating with paint, lighting and flea market finds. Friends and friends of friends began asking for help and it started as a little side business/hobby while working a nine to five. In 2010 I started blogging and showcasing my work and ideas, and at that point I felt like folks started to take it more seriously and business took off. What I love most about design, is helping people create a home they love living in. Our surroundings are so important to our daily lives and energy. It plays a role in everything we do, I really believe that. And being a designer is a gift. I’m so grateful (and flattered) every time a new client calls inviting me into their personal space. It’s a privilege I take very seriously.

I know you have fabulous style but can you give me three words you think describe your personal style?

Oh gosh, it’s so hard for me to label my style. It’s a conglomerate of so many things and always changing! I think if I had to come up with three words it would be FUN, classic and a little bit rock and roll.

Design trends come and go, but which design trend are you loving most right now? And which one do you wish would fade away?

I have to say I’m a huge fan of the notion of opposites attract. The idea of mixing an antique desk with a modern chair or hanging an ornate gold frame against a rustic, reclaimed wood wall. You see a lot of this mixing going on, traditional with modern. I’m not so sure this is a trend, so to speak, but I hope it sticks around because it creates great interest in interiors. As far as a trend I wish would go away, nothing really jumps out at me. I guess if you are going to hang your tv over your fireplace, please be discreet and creative in trying to camouflage it when not in use.

What’s your favorite room in your home?

Right now, none of them! LOL. But if I had to pick, I’d say our kitchen/keeping room is on track to being my favorite, probably because it’s the only space close to being “finished” and it’s where we spend most of our time together.

-those drapes!

What’s your most prized decorative accessory?

My most prized decorative accessory would be anything that belonged to my Mother. For example she had a pocket watch she wore on a gold chain, and I incorporate those things into vignettes around our home as a reminder of her love and sacrifice. Being a Mom is a really hard job!

♦♦♦

If you could share one piece of advice with aspiring designers, what would it be?

Be fearless in your design and ideas. Stick to your guns and don’t let any contractor, vendor, husband-of-the-client talk you out of it. Nothing is more frustrating, when you come up with an idea you laid in bed all night long thinking about, to have them roll their eyes at it and think you are crazy. You are not crazy. That and be prepared when you lay out your business plan, brand, processes and procedures. Have all that ready and rocking for when the flood hits because it will be too difficult to go back and implement while trying to design the lights out of five different spaces at once.

♦♦♦

What’s your favorite way to rewind after a long day?

Family dinners. Hands down. I feel like our corporate culture owns us Monday through Friday, so for me it’s so important to make those days count with a family dinner around the table. It might be 8 o’clock at night by the time we all sit down, but it’s happening. And Mommy gets very angry when over-the-top coaches or sports interfere with weekday family time. It’s so important for Mom, Dad, siblings to have that connection every day. To be heard.

I know you are from Michigan and love your home town, but what do you love most about living in the south?

What I love most about living in the South is Southerners passion for living! Whether it be their homes, gardens, entertaining, the way they still “get dressed” – the South is big on living and I think it played a major role in the success of my design career. I can’t say for sure that if I was still living in Michigan, I would have developed such a passion for interiors.

Tell me 5 things you can’t live without?

  1. Music (and the shazam app)
  2. a breeze and the sound of birds chirping
  3. Summers in Michigan (!!!)
  4. Backroads (an alternate route that forces you to slow down and enjoy the ride)
  5. Pinterest!

♦♦♦

And finally, if you had to choose…bold color or subdued neutrals?

Subdued neutrals. My next house will be all white! White floors, white everything.

Design Trends Come Alive at the ASO Decorators’ Show House

Hello and welcome to a new week!  As you may have noticed, the blog has been a little silent the last few days.  Last week was one of those weeks when my schedule got the best of me and blogging got pushed to the side.  Despite everything and a week of rainy days, I had a good week and got lots accomplished.

One of the fun things on my schedule last week was a preview event for the Atlanta Symphony Decorators’ Show House.  Along with select designers and bloggers, I was invited to a private tour of the home before it opened to the public.  Having attended many of the ASO show house over the years, I must say at this years’ show house, Chateau Soleil is one of my all-time favorites.

Let me take you on a little tour….

Chateau Soleil

Built in 1998 and designed by architect William T. Baker, the 14,000 sq. foot French style estate sits on 2 beautifully landscaped acres.  Named for its sunny, golden façade, Château Soleil is a show-stopper both inside and out.

Spray Paint Is One Of The Best Design Tools You’ll Ever Have

One question that I’ve been asked quite often is “what’s your best design tool”?  This is a pretty loaded question since there are a lot of different things that go into designing and decorating a room.  It could be my upholsterer who can transform a piece of furniture or my painter who can breathe life into a space with a simple coat of paint.

As an interior designer I have access to a wide variety of tools and a range of exclusive furniture, accessories and home decor items that I can pull from to design a space.

Having access to exclusive items is wonderful but sometimes the best design tool is something simple that doesn’t cost a lot of money, is easy to access and can yields high-end results in a flash.

Sometimes the best design tool you can have is a can of spray paint~

Daily Dose of Design–Unique Lighting

Have you ever noticed how lighting can change the feel and look of a space?

Above and beyond the physical light that a fixture gives off, the style of the fixture you choose can enhance or detract from the look of a room.

I always look for lighting that is compatible with the style of room I’m working on, but with its own character.  Lighting that is too similar to the overall style of a room can sometimes blend in and go unnoticed, versus standout and enhance a space.

Here are a few looks I love.

Colored chandeliers are a great way to add a splash of color to a room.

Paper lanterns are being used in design a lot these days and are an inexpensive way to add unique lighting to your home.

Ever thought about using outdoor lighting indoors?  It’s a great option, especially is spaces that need more causal, oversized ceiling fixtures.

Double hung chandeliers are great in bedrooms or dining rooms.

I love when I step into a room and see a light fixture or lamp that is unexpected.  Not only does the room feel more stylish, but the lighting adds a point of  interest that gives the room character.

What lights up your life?

Daily Dose of Design–Inviting Foyers

The first impression of your home is often set by the foyer.

Whether you have a defined foyer space or have to create one, your foyer should showcase your design style and decorative personality, as well as providing a functional space within your home.

Here are a few foyer spaces that are both Functional and Fashionable.

This small foyer niche looks larger than life with the addition of an oversized mirror and wall paper that visually extends the boundaries of the space.

The lower shelf unit, turned bench, provides stylish storage and gives the space personality.

Upholstered ottomans tucked under this foyer table add an element of softness to the space.

A vertically hung mirror, flanked by artwork groupings carry the eye up and make the space appear larger than it really is.

The tabletop accessories give you a sneak peek of the decorative style within the home.

If you need a place to drop the keys and mail, or a place to sit a spell, this foyer has it all.

I love how the large mirror and console are offset with the low slipper chairs and single wall sconce.

A true style statement that makes you feel welcome and at home.

Thing long hallway was turned into a stylish foyer with the addition of a long wall shelf and art grouping.

The shelf provides the function while the wall decor conveys the sense of style.

When decorating your foyer, give it a reason for being and make it pretty while you are at it!

My Blog Goals for 2016

Blog Goals-2016.002

It’s hard to believe that I started this blog almost 6 years ago.  I’ve enjoy the process from day one and while I’ve found myself getting caught up in the ‘their doing this’, ‘their doing that’ game along the way, I’ve tried to stay true to what my mission was.

My goal from the start was to share and inspire and today that goal remains the same.  One of my passions is interior design and I want this blog to motivate and inspire you with your own decorating.  Entertaining, whether on a small or large-scale is something I love and I want to share unique and creative entertaining ideas with you.  I’ve been a crafter all my life and through this blog I plan to share fun and easy projects with you.  And when it comes to creative gift wrapping, my passion soars and I want to show you how to gift in style. ConfettiStyle is a lifestyle blog meant to enhance your life.

So, what do I have planned for ConfettiStyle in 2016?

Over the last couple of years I’ve featured several design series here on the blog and many will continue in the new year.   In the Design Chat series I’ll continue to answer your design questions and offer up advice, solutions and inspiration to help you tackle it like a pro.

The ConfettiStyle Design Guide series lets me share my design knowledge with you in more detail and will include topics like The Best Paint Colors For Decorating, Selecting Lighting For Your Home, Organizing & Decorating a Home Office and Small Space Decorating Secrets Designers Use.

Another fun series you’ll continue to see is Product + Inspiration.  This is where I share a popular home decor item along with inspirational photos and decorating tips for that item.  This series just might make you look at an item in a new way.

I slacked a bit (ok, a lot) last year on my Gift Wrap Inspiration posts but have lots of fun, new gift wrap ideas to share with you in 2016.

A new series you’ll see on the blog is called Behind The Blog.  I’ve made lots of friends and contacts through my blog and want to share them all with you.  In this series, I’ll do a personal interview with bloggers I admire, giving you a glimpse into their blog, their inspiration and their talents.

And finally, I’ll continue to bring you crafting and DIY projects, fashion finds, easy decorating ideas and so much more–all the things I’m passionate about.

Weekend Wrap-Up | Fall Favorites & What I Bought

Happy Saturday!  I woke up this morning, stepped outside and got a whiff of fall.  It was cool outside and I noticed that the leaves are slowly starting to change on the trees.  Unfortunately the cool temps won’t last because its supposed to be in the 90’s today.  With temps like that I’m planning to stay close to home this weekend, get through my magazine stack and do a little work.  Wherever you are, I hope your weekend is great.

Here are a few of my favorite things from the week:
