Product + Inspiration: Oversized Clocks

Larger Clock

I have always been a fan of clocks when it comes to decor for the home. I love clocks of all sizes but over the last few years I’ve seen the trend of larger clocks growing. Clocks like this Howard Miller Postema Gallery Wall Clock which measures 49 inches in diameter is not only unique but it is a great way to make a bold statement with your decor.

Larger clocks are a fun accent in a foyer with expansive ceilings and ample wall space.

ASO Decorators’ Show House & Gardens

Three cheers for a great weekend!  I hope yours was great too!

Last Thursday I was invited to preview the 44th Annual Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Designers Show House and let me tell you, this is one of the best show houses I’ve seen in Atlanta in many, many years.

IMG_8709

Built in the 1920’s, the Palazzo Rose is a beautiful Italian inspired estate that sits on West Paces Ferry Road, one of Atlanta’s most distinguished streets.   This year, over 30 of Atlanta’s top interior designers and design firms were selected to design and decorate the home and every room was breathtaking! If you love touring show homes and live in the Atlanta area,  you should definitely make time to see the Pink Palace. If you can’t make it, here’s your own personal tour of The Pink Place.  Enjoy and be inspired!

Inspiration + Weekend Reading

Happy Saturday!  I hope your weekend is starting off great.
Now that the Nordstrom Anniversary sale is over I can’t help but feel like fall is just around the corner.  During these last weeks of summer, it’s the perfect time to begin thinking about your fall wardrobe and maybe do a little organizing and styling in your closet.  This image is a great example of how you can achieve both organization and style in a small closet space.  It has definitely inspired me to do some purging, sorting and de-cluttering in my closet.

When you take a break from organizing, take a moment to enjoy these weekend reads….
No matter what age you are, this is sound advice for both your business and personal life.  A must read!! Thanks to Mandy over at Waiting on Martha to bring it to my attention.

You’re going to love this home tour and you’ll get some great decorating tips from it too.
Beautiful inspiration if you want to decorate with black.
What a great way to inspire a table décor theme!
I love how creative Kristin used the leftover space in her laundry closet!
I found this blog post to be a great reminder that “surrounding yourself only with people who will lift you higher” is something we should all be striving for.

DIY Cloche

Happy Friday!

Well, as you can see I didn’t get around to posting my DIY project yesterday.  Instead, I was at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) spending the morning and afternoon with two Million Dollar Decorators

Mary and Martyn shared lots of fabulous design advice with the audience and afterwards spent time chatting with each of us and taking photos.  Much of what they had to share hit home with me and I gained some valuable insights on how I can make my design business better.  Thanks Mary and Martyn!

Now, on to the fun DIY project I want  to share with you…DIY cloches!

You see, I love glass cloches.  There is just something beautiful about displaying items you love under glass as if they were priceless heirlooms.  Since I already have a couple of traditional glass cloches I decided I wanted to add a few more to my mix and this time I wanted them have a bit more style.  With that, a super quick and easy DIY project was born!

Slide2

Slide3

Slide4

I made three cloches each with a different decorative knob handle.  The wood lamp bases really add a lot to the smaller cloche and the decorative plate I used with the taller cloche can easily be changed out when I change the items displayed inside.  I’m still finding the right spot in my home to display each cloche and I’m also going to be changing/adding to the elements inside each one as well.  Plus, I’m looking forward to changing out the looks seasonally, inspired by these cloche displays!

The Kentucky Derby 2013: I Went, I Got Wet and I Didn’t Win

Hi there! I hope everyone is easing into the week. After resting up yesterday, I’m feeling better with just a husky voice and a lingering cough the only signs of my cold. I promised I’d be back today to share the highlights of my trip to the Kentucky Derby. If you watched the Derby on TV  you saw that it was raining like cats and dogs so I have to apologize up front that I didn’t get to take as many photos as I wanted and some of the photos are dark given the weather, but there is plenty to see!
First let me say that if you’ve never been to the Kentucky Derby you must add it to your bucket list. It really is a once in-a-lifetime adventure and the best people watching ever. Louisville is a beautiful southern city but when it comes to the Derby, the city transforms into an entirely different place. Pomp, circumstance, big hats and more private jets at an airport than I’ve ever seen before. I’ve been to Churchill Downs before and have attend Kentucky Derby events in the past, but I’ve never attended the official derby day races before and can only describe it as amazing!
Upon arriving in Louisville I told my brother I needed to buy a hat for derby day. He said “no problem” but failed to mention to me what it was like shopping for a hat the day before the derby. OMG!!!!
I visited several stores, saw some beautiful hats and I tried on lots of them. Bold, colorful and overly embellished was the protocol for the derby.  I snapped these photos in a store called Dee’s where you could by pre-made hats, or if you wanted something a little more custom you could buy different elements ($17 for a silk flower) and the store designers would create a hat right there on the spot for you.  So I dove in searched for “my hat”….

IMG_1939  IMG_1941

IMG_1940

All the hats I looked at were amazing, but I just couldn’t pay $150 or more for a hat that I would probably only wear once. Yes, $150 was the average price for a hat (even at SteinMart).  The pink and black hat in the photo above was $189.00 and the black and white hat in the top photo was $169.00.  Ladies were buying these hats like they were candy but I just couldn’t go there.
So, what’s a girl to do when she needs a hat for the Kentucky Derby but wants to do it on the down low? She gets creative and pulls out the hot glue gun, that’s what she does!
{keep reading, the unveiling of my hat is coming}
But before the hat could be made there was partying to do…
On our first night in Louisville we attended the Derby Poker Championship Gala where professional poker players and celebrities gathered to play poker with proceeds going to charity.  There was lots of money and cocktails flowing but the highlight of the evening for me was meeting and chatting with legendary basketball coach Denny Crum.  My brother is a VP at the University of Louisville and has worked with Denny for many years so we were able to get a photo with him.

IMG_1936

The food was flowing, the music was blasting, there was dancing and this amazing artist was on site creating this piece of art.  He started painting at the beginning of the event and had the piece complete by the end of the evening.
The next evening, we attended a formal dinner party hosted by Senator Gerald Neal and his wife.  The event included a wonderful southern dinner, a jazz band, a play and dancing.

Needless to say after shopping for a hat, parties and cocktails I was a tired gal but there was still a hat to be made.  Late Friday night I pulled out my supplies and got to work.  My outfit for the derby was this long brightly colored dress so I decided to use a black hat and dress it up with flowers and tulle to match the dress.

IMG_1938

IMG_1943

I added a green band of ribbon around the cap of the hat

IMG_1944

and then added black tulle and big fluffy flowers in orange, white and royal blue.

IMG_5914

I didn’t want an over-the-top hat so I was really happy with the way this turned out and for only $50.00.
Saturday morning we set out for Churchill Downs.  It was already raining and luckily we had rain ponchos in the car and stopped at the dollar store for cheap umbrellas we could dump at the gate.

There was lots of security at the entrance gate so I felt really safe plus all handbags were being check and they were doing body scans too.
The crowds were thick but that didn’t stop me from checking  out all the fashions.  There was lots of classic derby attire like seersucker suits and eyelet dresses

but a few women decided to go be a little bolder with their look.

Many of the men also got the “go bold or go home” message and came dressed to stand out.

Even Colonel Sanders ( with his stunt double) and Abe Lincoln made an appearance.

My brother and Mary took a more sophisticated approach with their derby attire.
Along with the clothes, there were amazing hats, some high style and some more comical.

There were lots of celebrities walking the red carpet including Smokey Robinson and his wife.  This was the only picture I was able to get before the crowds drowned me out.

Here’s the rose garland that was draped over the winning horse.  Did you know that a different Kroger grocery store in Louisville makes this garland each year, the night before the race?

Despite getting really wet and catching a cold, we had a great time.  We are already planning our trip to the derby next year and I’m gathering ideas for my hat.  I think I’m going to be on the “go bold or go home” team for derby 2014!  Why not!

A Few Things I’m Really Excited About

The Little Book of Big Decorating Ideas

I can’t resist books so when I heard that Country Living has a new book coming out I immediately pre-ordered it.   The Little Book of Big Decorating Ideas is a compilation of over 205 of the magazines best design, decor, DIY and crafting ideas & projects. The book will be out in June.

Chevron Journal Set
These cute Chevron journals from C. Wonder.
I finished creating a design plan for an outdoor deck and presented it to the client. One of the elements that inspired the design was this pillow.  I love this pillow so much I had stop by the store and buy one for myself last night.

I was invited by the ladies that own Antique Traditions in Norcross, GA to be the guest of honor at their upcoming Ladies Night Out Event on May 1st.  I am so excited to meet Hazel, Lorraine, Taylor, Mary and Carolee and share a little of my design knowledge with their customers.  Stay tuned for more details about the event.
I was inspired by this image and am working on a fun DIY project to show you in a couple of days.
What’s exciting you these days?

My Trip to GreenHouse Barn

So, did you have a great weekend? Mine was awesome!  I got lots of work done, had some much-needed down time and loved watching the Super Bowl!
Beyoncé was fabulous and my favorite commercials were the Dodge Ram commercial about farmers, the Budweiser commercial with the Clydesdale and the Doritos commercial with the little girl and her dad.
Today I wanted to share photos of a new vintage shop I recently visited but first I have to give you a bit of background…
Have you ever met someone and wondered why your paths crossed? I have. Take Kenya for example. Last year I attended a workshop at Anthropologie with my friend Tina. I was one of the first to arrive and sat at the end of one table. As more people arrived they sat at various places around the tables leaving several spots near me vacant. Two more people showed up and took the seats next to me and Tina. During the course of the workshop the four of us chatted a bit and share a bit about our professions and hobbies. Come to find out that all of us love vintage and love to shop flea markets, estate sales, garage sales and thrift stores. Come to find out that Kenya loves vintage so much that she was planning to open a little shop in a barn in Senoia, GA, outside Atlanta. As we all chatted it was clear to me that our paths crossed for a reason.
Before we parted ways, I gave Kenya one of my business cards. She was interested in looking at some of my handmade jewelry which I sell on my Etsy shop, and wanted to keep in touch. Kenya and I talked a few times in November of last year and one of the things we discussed was putting some of my jewelry pieces in her soon to be shop. As Kenya and I got to know each other, I thought again that our paths were meant to cross!
Kenya opened her shop, Greenhouse Barn in December last year and it was a big success. I had plans to get some of my pieces in the shop for the opening but my feature in Country Living Magazine and my holiday design work kept me too busy to make it happen. Well, fast forward to last week when I took a little drive to the Greenhouse Barn to see Kenya’s dream shop and to discuss plans for selling some of my pieces in the store. I was blown away at what a cute little shop the Greenhouse Barn is.
The barn is located one block off the main street in Senoia, GA, about an hour and 15 minutes outside Atlanta. Senoia is known not only as being a quaint little southern town but also because it is where the show The Walking Dead is filmed. Greenhouse Barn is a rustic little red barn that sits behind a historic Inn and is filled with lots of vintage wares ranging  from furniture and accessories to salvaged and reclaimed pieces. And oh is it a charming little shop!
Enjoy the virtual shopping tour…
