Weekend Wrap-Up: Vol. 3

Weekend Wrap-Up from ConfettiStyle

Happy weekend!  After a week of pretty cold temperatures, the weekend is shaping up to be pretty nice here with highs in the 70’s.  I’m hoping that this warm-up doesn’t mean we are just going to skip spring and move right into summer.  Either way, I’ll take whatever sunshine I can get.

I’m heading out to do a some spring shopping this morning and then I’m hoping to get a few projects underway around the house.  One of the projects I’m working on is a spring tablescape that I’ll be sharing with you next week. Whatever you have in store for the weekend, make it a good one!

I love when I discover a new Instagram account that has me scrolling for hours.  Kirby & Company did just that.  Elaine’s feed is filled with beautiful and colorful images.  You can shop her online shop here. So many goodies!

I’m excited to add this new design book to my collection.  The release date is Sept. 4th but you can pre-order your copy here.

This is such an easy drawer organizing DIY.

Have you checked out Target’s new outdoor furniture collection.  It’s so good.  I’m really loving this chair.

I’m kind of crushing on this crossbody bag from Zara.  And it’s my favorite color.

Are you an avid podcast listener?  It seems to the be chic thing to do these days.  I’ve starting listening to a few podcast while I work and there are three so far that I’d highly recommend:   Blogging Your Passion. Women Inspiring Women and  Goal Digger.

Excited about the new Pottery Barn and Lily Pulitzer collaboration.

Refresh Your Decor for the New Year

Refresh Your Decor for The New Year

Every year when the Christmas decor comes down I feel like my decor has lost its luster.  My living room feel bare, my decor feels stale and everything that I loved before Christmas feels like it needs fresh, new energy.  I know I’m not alone in this feeling and that many of you are looking at your decor right now and wondering how you can inject some life and energy into it.

Over the years I’ve learned and employed some simple and inexpensive decorating tricks the refresh my decor for the new year.

♦♦♦

Refresh Your Decor for The New Year

Every now and then you need to change things up in your decor to give it a new feeling.  The start of a new year is the perfect time to try a new furniture arrangement, move pieces from one room to another or re-arrange your accessories.  Move lamps around a room or even consider layer a smaller rug over the top of a larger one.  Sometimes all it takes is a tiny shift of perspective to see something familiar in a totally new light.

Refresh Your Decor for The New Year

Many time when I’m feeling a sense of uneasiness with my decor it has to do with clutter and disorganization.  Dedicate the month of January to cleaning, organizing and purging every room in your home.  Donate the things that you no longer use, organized the spaces (drawers, closets and tabletop surfaces) that use most offend and give your entire home a deep cleaning.  Clutter in you physical surroundings will clutter your mind and spirit.

Refresh Your Decor for The New Year

Color is an immediate mood booster so try adding in a new accent color into your decor to refresh the palette.  Switching out pillows is easy and cost-effective and will add big pops of color within your decor.  Color accents can also be added with small accent furniture, blankets & throws, artwork and decorative accessories.  In decorating, it’s often the little things that make the biggest impact.

tip:  when shopping for pillows, look for covers with hidden zippers so you can reuse the inserts when you change your pillow decor

Refresh Your Decor for The New Year

During the holiday season we are surrounded with and abundance of patterns and colors.  Once the Christmas decor is down your surroundings may feel flat and lifeless.  The quick fix for that is pattern mixing.  Combine different pattern styles and colors to re-energize your decor.

tip:  a winning pattern mix combines small patterns against large ones and includes one big solid ( on sofa, floor, or wall) in the room.

Refresh Your Decor for The New Year

You might think that once artwork is hung on the wall it’s there to stay.   That doesn’t have to be the case.  During the winter months you can bring a room to life by simply switching out a piece of artwork with a mirror.  Mirrors enhance the light within a room(both natural and decorative) and will instantly make a room feel lighter, brighter and more open.

tip:  oversized floor mirrors will make small spaces feel bigger in addition to making the decor feel more important

Refresh Your Decor for The New Year

Look around the rooms in your home and see where you can create a cozy seating area or reading nook.  Cozy areas will make your home feel more intimate and personal which is the feeling your home had when all your Christmas decor was up.

Refresh Your Decor for The New Year

Plants and flowers will  make your decor feel special anytime of the year but during the winter months the emotional energy these elements add is enhanced.  Place small plants or a vase on flowers on tabletop surfaces in the main living areas of your home as well as the bedroom and bathroom.

tip: if you don’t have a green thumb, decorating with artificial plants and flowers–they provide the same emotional lift that real greenery does.

Refresh Your Decor for The New Year

Candles are my go-to accessory during the cold winter months.  Not only can candles provide a sense of warmth but the glow increases the sense of relaxation and coziness that a room has.  Arrange a group of candles on the coffee table or along the mantel.

It doesn’t take a lot to give your home a fresh, new feeling for the new year so use one or all of these design tips to refresh your decor.

Holiday Hostess Gift–DIY Gift Tag Jar

Holiday Gift Tag Jar by ConfettiStyle

Is your holiday party calendar is already booked up?  If so, I know you’re on the hunt for creative hostess gift ideas.  I’ll be sharing my Holiday Gift Guides starting Monday but today I have a fun and easy DIY hostess gift idea to share.

No matter what type of holiday party we attend, my criteria for a hostess gift is that it needs to be creative, fun AND useful. This year I came up with the idea of creating a Holiday Gift Tag Jar filled with an assortment of gift tags and ribbon.  What I love about this gift is that it only take a few minutes to pull together and you can find all of the supplies you need for less than $12!  Everything you see here came from TJMaxx.

Holiday Gift Tag Jar by ConfettiStyleI used a glass jar for this hostess gift but you could use jsut about any decorative container that you want. The jar is purchased has a pretty embossed snowflake pattern on the outside but you could add  a sticker to a plain jar to get the same effect. And I purchased boxed sets of ribbon and gift tags which included enough of each that I am able tome two jars.

Lay out all your ribbon and tags and mix and match so that you jar includes a variety.  Fill the jar so that you can see everything inside and then tie a bow around the lid as a finishing touch. It’s that easy!

In addition to being a great hostess gift, a Holiday Gift Tag jar would make a fun gift for a girlfriend, co-worker or someone in your posse like your hair stylist or manicurist.

p.s.  A Holiday Gift Tag Jar isn’t just for Christmas.  You can make a year round version filled with all occasion tags and ribbon.

Preparing For The Holidays (and reducing holiday stress)

preparing-for-the-holiays

Can you believe that there are only 41 days until Christmas?  This weekend the magnitude of my holiday to-do list set in and I began to panic about everything I need to get done.  When that panic set in I knew I need to sit down and strategize my holiday season.   With pen and paper in hand, I outlined a strategy to take the stress out of the holidays and put the joy back in.

I know many of you can relate so today I’m sharing my tips for a Stress-Free Holiday Season.

♦♦♦

PLAN YOUR HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES

Planning is key to getting things done this holiday and finding time to enjoy the season. The first thing to do is pull out your calendar and jot down all the activities you want and need to participate in. Plan time to enjoy holiday traditions with family and friends and block out time to just relax.

tip:  pull out your favorite board games and put them in a basket where they are accessible and will encourage play time.

CREATE A DETAILED GIFT LIST

If you haven’t started your gift list yet , it’s time to sit down and create one.  Spend time online looking for the perfect gift and do some price comparisons.  Plan to shop on Small Business Saturday (Sat., Nov. 26th) to support your favorite local businesses.  When planning your gift lists, gather store coupons so they will be handy when you head out to shop.

tip:  many stores have already started offering Black Friday Deals so shopping early can reduce stress and save you some money.

And to make things even easier, I created a fun Gift List printable below for you to use.

GET THE GUEST ROOM READY

Hosting guests during the holidays doesn’t have to be overwhelming if you plan ahead.  Stock up on petite size toiletries and snack food for your guest to use and enjoy.  Wash sheets and towels and placed them in a linen closet or accessible storage area.  Create an essential list for your guest including phone numbers, house alarm code, wi-fi password and local points of interest.

tip:  place a basket in your guest bedroom to hold extra blankets and pillows so guest don’t have to come asking for them.

Preparing For The Holidays

STOCK UP ON NECESSARY COOKING SUPPLIES/FOOD ITEMS

Don’t take the chance that your grocery store will have everything you need days before Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Plan your holiday menus and shop now for all the necessary supplies.  Stock up on items like beverages, frozen food and spices so you have enough to last through the season.

DECORATE YOUR OWN WAY

Decorating during the holidays can sometimes feel like a challenge–who can make their home the merriest.  One way to take the stress out of the season is to decorate your way.  Decorate as little or as much as you want and don’t feel bad if you don’t get it all done.  This is the time of year when the focus should be on spending time with family and friends and remembering all that we have to be grateful for.

tip:  if the idea of decorating a tree has you cringing, don’t do it. Hang a few garlands and wreaths, put out a few Christmas pillows and call it a day.

Preparing For The Holidays

PLAY MUSIC

Music is proven to have a calming effect so during the busy holiday season turn on some tunes and enjoy the season through music.  Create a holiday playlist in iTunes that includes your favorite Christmas songs and make it a point to enjoy at least 30 minutes of music each day.

KEEP YOU HOME CLUTTER FREE AND ORGANIZED

It’s easy to let clutter and chaos take over during the holidays.  Create storage areas of holiday wrapping paper, supplies and cards so you have a designated place to store things.  And spend 10 minutes every day walking through the house so that task of doing major cleaning is more manageable.

Winter Scarves From Nordstrom (budget friendly finds)

Winter Scarves From Nordstrom

I woke up yesterday morning and it was down right frigid outside.  The warm weather trend is definitely over and the cool, crisp air of fall is here to stay.  One of my go-to fashion accessories when the weather turns cool is a scarf.  I am always cold and a scarf adds just the right layer of warmth around my neck and shoulders.

When I was cleaning out my closet in early spring, I tossed a few of my scarves that had seen better days. Now I’m in the market for a couple of new scarves that will work as transitional pieces from fall to winter.

Nordstrom always has a great selection of scarves and I always find what I’m looking for.  A recent search of their website served up some great options, most of which are priced between $25.00 and $50.00.  And here’s a great tip if you’re looking for fashion scarves on a budget–shop the Brass Plum department.  Brass Plum is a shop aimed primarily for juniors but their accessory items are perfect for any fashionista, regardless of your age.

Let’s go scarf shopping shall we…

Winter Scarves from Nordstrom

No. 1 — This Abstract Print Cashmere & Silk Scarf is the most expensive scarf ($99) in my group but I just love the blue and white marble swirl pattern. It’s the perfect scarf to wear with jeans and sweaters.
No. 2 — Navajo prints are a hot trend right now and the Atlas Scarf is a classic take on the design style.  This will look great with a chunky sweater, slim jean and ankle boots.
No. 3 — The Fantasy Brushstroke Scarf  is another abstract pattern that looks like a piece of artwork.  I adore the pink and red color combo and would style this with a denim dress and tights.
No. 4 — If you love graphic patterns, you’ll love this Geo Pattern Woven Square Scarf .  This is the perfect piece to pair with a wool coat or quilted vest.
Winter Scarves From Nordstrom
No.5 — I love the grey, ivory and yellow in this Stripe Plaid Scarf and the $29 price makes it even more attractive. I’m definitely going  picking this one up.
No.6  — I own this Reversible Scarf and love the two patterns because it like two scarves in one.  The scarf is oversized and a little thicker than the others so it works as a great outer layer when a coat is too much.
No. 7 — Have you noticed all the navy clothing in stores for fall and winter?  This navy and grey Colorblock Woven Scarf  has a classic design and the lightweight fabric makes it really versatile for layering.
No. 8 — I’m all about scarves with all-over patterns and love this Vintage Garden Scarf.  This is another one I’ll be adding to my wardrobe.

With an ever-growing scarf collection, I’m on the hunt for a new way to organize and store them while reducing wrinkles and keeping them visible.  Here are a few ideas from Pinterest that I’m inspired by.

Inspiration Notebook–November 2016

November Inspiration Notebook--2016

I took a different approach when I was creating the November insert for my Inspiration Notebook and decides to sum up the month with a bucket list.

November is a really busy time of year for me as I’m prepping to decorate client homes for the holidays and working to finish up design projects.  Then you throw in managing my role as President of a non-profit board, blog projects and getting myself ready for the holidays.  By creating a bucket list, I’m hoping it keeps me focused on making time to relax and enjoy life.

My November Bucket List

  1. Purge My Closet.  I feel like I just transitioned my closet for summer.  And despite having temps in the 80’s, I know it’s time to get my closet winter ready.  While I’m organizing things, I also plan to purge pieces I don’t wear anymore and donate them.  Right before the holidays, the need in charity stores rises so it’s a perfect time give to a good cause.
  2. Visit Biltmore Estates.  I’ve always wanted to visit Biltmore this time of year to see the holiday decor.  A weekend drive will also give us the opportunity to enjoy the mountains and see the leaves in their full fall glory.
  3. Plant Paperwhites.  This is another thing I’ve always wanted to do at the holidays.  I love the smell of paper whites and want to give forcing bulbs a try.  I found this easy to follow guide that I’m sure I’ll be referencing a lot.
  4. Bake Cookies–I’m in somewhat a nesting mood and have the urge to bake cookies. I’m going to start with classic chocolate chip cookies and may try something fancy as we get closer to Christmas.
  5. Enjoy Hot Chocolate & Apple Cider.  I’m not a coffee drinker so hot beverages during fall and winter are my thing. You can find my favorite spiked cider recipe here
  6. Make Handmade Christmas Cards.  For years I made my Christmas cards by hand and really loved doing it.  Last year I managed to make a handful but this year I’m determined to make all my holiday cards by hand.  I’ll be sure to share the design once I have it nailed down.
  7. Buy the Southern Living Christmas Book.  I’m a sucker for the annual Southern Living Christmas Book and this years looks really good.    Do any of you collect the SL books? (affiliate link)
  8. Get My Christmas Shopping Done.   Usually by November I have most of my Christmas shopping completed.  Not this year!  The only thing I have so far this year is a mental list of items to buy.  In the next week or two I’m going to put pencil to paper and create a detailed list so I can start shopping.
  9. Give An Unexpected Gift.  I’ve got a fun gift basket idea that I’m working on this month.  Once it’s all done I’m going to give the basket to someone who won’t expect it.  I love a good surprise, especially during the holiday season.
  10. Watch My Favorite Christmas Movie.  I’m a bit addicted to Christmas movies and have watched a couple last weekend on the Hallmark channel.  I can’t wait to pull out my favorite movie (The HomeComing) and snuggle up with some popcorn to watch on Thanksgiving night.
  11. Buy Poinsettia At Home Depot. If you don’t know about the Black Friday Poinsettia sale at Home Depot on Black Friday, you can thank me later.  If you already know about it, then I might see you in the check out lane. All day, the day after Thanksgiving, Home Depot sells their poinsettia for $.99 cents.  It’s a great time to snag a few (or a lot) and even think about giving some as gifts.
  12. Be Thankful.  Probably the most important thing on my bucket list is to be thankful for everything I have in my life.  Sometimes we get so busy living life that we forget to stop and remember all the good we have.  I hope you’ll join me and take a moment out of each day to stop and give thanks.
