Design Chat: Office Organization & Decorating Ideas

Hello friends. Sorry for the lack of blog posts the last few days.  I’ve been attending the Atlanta Gift and Home Furnishings show for the last week and just couldn’t find time to sit at the computer and finish up the blog post I had planned for the week.  The show is over, I’ve caught up on some rest and I’m ready to jump back in the saddle again.

Today I’m bringing you the first Design Chat post of the year and I’m addressing a comment left by Liz  about decorating her office space.  In addition to decorating ideas, Liz wanted tips on organizing her workspace without sacrificing style.  I know many of you are dealing with office space issues too, so here’s some design advice and decorating inspiration that I hope will help.

Design Chat: Office Decor and Organization.001

Decorating an office space, whether in the home or out, can be challenging.  You’re trying to strike a balance between functional and organized with inspirational and pretty.  When it comes to organization in your office here are the things you want to address:

A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE–disorganization happens when you don’t have an easy and accessible place to store every day items.  Add style by using decorative containers to hold office supplies.  And when shopping for containers, don’t just shop the office supply area, look for unique containers in the kitchen and bath department, at craft stores and even in home decor stores.

tip:  go vertical where possible to maximize every inch of your office space

DECORATE WITH FURNITURE THAT WORKS IN MULTIPLE WAYS–a divided bookcase is one of the best pieces of furniture you can use in a home office.  Each cubby can hold different items and items can be organized in baskets, boxes, jars or other containers adding to the decor of your space.

tip:  keep smaller objects organized in baskets and bins and use larger items for display and visual impact

Office storage--masculine

via

tip:  painted file cabinets (an easy DIY) can be used in place of a side table or console table while offering you loads of storage space

File Cabinets

via

USE EVERY AVAILABLE INCH OF SPACE–when you look around your office space, keep your eyes open for unexpected areas where you can incorporate storage and organization.  Hang wire shelving or cork boards on the inside of closet doors and place lidded baskets or a small file cabinets under your desk.

Desk Storage

via

CREATE ORGANIZATION THAT’S MOBILE–many times a home office has limited space so getting creative with how and where you store supplies is necessary. Rolling carts can be used to hold desk accessories and offices supplies, and can be pulled out when needed and stored in a closet when not in use.  Magazine files, baskets and bowls can hold items on the cart and make it easy to move those items to your desk surface when you’re working.

tip:  rolling carts are idea for wireless printers and other office machinery

CREATE COHESION WITH COLOR–there are lots of ways you can organize papers, files and supplies but using a color system not only adds to the style of your office but can help you create a storage system that’s easy to manage.

Identify a specific color for different categories of products like receipts, office tools, paper or computer/camera accessories.

tip: pick a color theme that energizes and makes you happy so you’ll feel good when you’re working in your office

Office Organization

via

PUT A LABEL ON IT— labels will make finding things in your office easy and make putting things back a breeze.  Use a label maker or print labels on sticker paper so that the style, font and color is consistent throughout your office.  Consistency=order and visual beauty.

tip:  label holders with handles work great on magazine files, cabinet doors, filing cabinets and baskets

MAKE YOUR SPACE PRETTY & INSPIRATIONAL:  include decorative elements that are pretty, inspirational and remind you of your goals and wishes.  Decorative clipboards are my go-to office accessory and not only serve as wall decor but are functional when I need a writing surface outside my office.

tip:  make your own decorative clipboards using craft supplies or shop decorative clipboards here.

Now that you have some tools to help you get organized, let’s take a look at some of my favorite office spaces around the web…

Office Space Inspiration:

This compact office space does not lace style or personality.  The gold accents create a theme and even the extra side chair become a stylish way to store books.

I’ve shown this image on the blog  before and it continues to be one of my all-time favorite office spaces.  The cabinet along with the shelving provide major storage and display space, and the baskets and boxes add the stylish organization every office needs.

My Blog Goals for 2016

Blog Goals-2016.002

It’s hard to believe that I started this blog almost 6 years ago.  I’ve enjoy the process from day one and while I’ve found myself getting caught up in the ‘their doing this’, ‘their doing that’ game along the way, I’ve tried to stay true to what my mission was.

My goal from the start was to share and inspire and today that goal remains the same.  One of my passions is interior design and I want this blog to motivate and inspire you with your own decorating.  Entertaining, whether on a small or large-scale is something I love and I want to share unique and creative entertaining ideas with you.  I’ve been a crafter all my life and through this blog I plan to share fun and easy projects with you.  And when it comes to creative gift wrapping, my passion soars and I want to show you how to gift in style. ConfettiStyle is a lifestyle blog meant to enhance your life.

So, what do I have planned for ConfettiStyle in 2016?

Over the last couple of years I’ve featured several design series here on the blog and many will continue in the new year.   In the Design Chat series I’ll continue to answer your design questions and offer up advice, solutions and inspiration to help you tackle it like a pro.

The ConfettiStyle Design Guide series lets me share my design knowledge with you in more detail and will include topics like The Best Paint Colors For Decorating, Selecting Lighting For Your Home, Organizing & Decorating a Home Office and Small Space Decorating Secrets Designers Use.

Another fun series you’ll continue to see is Product + Inspiration.  This is where I share a popular home decor item along with inspirational photos and decorating tips for that item.  This series just might make you look at an item in a new way.

I slacked a bit (ok, a lot) last year on my Gift Wrap Inspiration posts but have lots of fun, new gift wrap ideas to share with you in 2016.

A new series you’ll see on the blog is called Behind The Blog.  I’ve made lots of friends and contacts through my blog and want to share them all with you.  In this series, I’ll do a personal interview with bloggers I admire, giving you a glimpse into their blog, their inspiration and their talents.

And finally, I’ll continue to bring you crafting and DIY projects, fashion finds, easy decorating ideas and so much more–all the things I’m passionate about.

Use What You Have Holiday Decor

DIY Tile Ornaments

Hey, hey, hey!  Just when I thought I was finished decorating I came across a remnant supply in the garage as I was organizing some shelving in the garage.  I walked around with the remnant in my hand for a bit, not knowing what to do with just this single piece.  Toss it…store it….donate it….or craft with it.

If you know me, you know the answer was craft with it.  So that’s what I did!

I’m sure you’re wondering by now what the remnant supply piece was, well the wait it over.

Dressing the back of the toilet!

I was looking around one of my bathrooms the other day and noticed that I didn’t have anything on the back of the toilet.  The vanity was decorated, there was art on the walls and I had decorative towels, rugs and a shower curtain.  The empty space on the back of the toilet sat empty so I decided to change that. I searched Pinterest for some inspiration and noticed a few tried and true decorating  solutions for the back of a toilet.

I decided to keep the accessorizing on the back of my toilet simple and came up with three options.  Here’s a look a glimpse at the decor in the bathroom…

5 Decorative Items To Buy at Walmart!

What to buy at WalMart.001

I think a lot of people shop Walmart just for kitchen and beauty staples and have never recognized that they also carry some great decorative pieces too.   If you take a look around the store you’ll not only notice stylish containers and dinnerware but there are some nice accent furniture and storage pieces as well.

Whenever I’m at Walmart I browse the aisles looking for what’s new and thought today would be a great day to share FIVE decor pieces I think are worth buying at Walmart.

Happy Shopping!

The Heritage Jar has been one of my favorite jars for several years now.  When I first spotted it at Walmart I think the price was $10 and even though the price has increased a bit to $16.29 it’s still a good value.  The glass is thick and at a one gallon size the jar is one of the most functional and stylish way to store dry goods in the kitchen.

Deal alert:  I just spotted a 2 gallon version of the Heritage Jar at Target for $13.99 which is an even better deal

I love finding a good deal on lampshades and Walmart has a classic drum shades at a great price.  This Better Homes and Garden Black Drum Shade is only $12.97 but has the look and details and higher priced shade.  You can’t go wrong with this!

And if you want even more style in your lampshade, I absolutely love this Black and White Cow Lampshade for only $25.00

If you’re looking for an inexpensive storage ottoman, Walmart has a nice selection to choose from.  This Kent Storage Ottoman is a great piece that pack a lot of style for just $168.17.

And another super chic storage ottoman is the Liverpool Linen Storage Ottoman–$240.18

Finding a nice looking bookcase can be challenging.  This BHG Crossmill Bookcase is a great piece and I love the weathered finish and the $199.88 price tag.  It also comes in a version with lower cabinet doors for $109.00

When it comes to organizing, baskets and bins are an essential design element and I especially love bins that have some character and charm to them.  Walmart sells lots of different basket and bin styles but at the top of my list is this Galvanized Bin.  There are two sizes available ($7.47 and $12.44) which means you have a size to fit all your decorating and organizing needs.

Creative Space Inspiration {plus a few creative links}

Cheers to the weekend!

When it comes to creative work spaces, the space below is one of my all time favorites.  I love how open the room is and the sense of organization and order.  And despite all the structure in the room, the space exudes warmth and creativity.

Even if you don’t have a creative space as big as this, you can be inspired by some of the details in this room:

♦  Use baskets to add texture, warmth and organization

♦  Use decorative tags to label baskets, bins and storage boxes

♦  Create a sense of order by using one style of storage box or binder

♦  Opt for nontraditional seating if it works for how you use the space

♦  Add a narrow counter height table to serve as your computer desk and then use a large table as a work surface

♦  Hang decorative lighting to add style and highlight the work area within the room
