DIY–Christmas Countdown Gift Holder

 Christmas Countdown Gift Holder

If you’re anything like me, finding that special holiday gift gets harder and harder each year.  Every year, I try to come up with something unique and different to put a spin on gift giving.  I’ve created my version of Oprah’s Favorite Things, I’ve gone down the clothes route, and I’ve relied on magazine subscriptions way to often.

To change things up a bit this year, I decided to make a DIY version of an Advent Calendar, or as I call it, a Christmas Countdown Gift Holder.

If you’re not familiar with the meaning behind Advent Calendars, simply put, it is a special calendar that is used to count or celebrate the coming of Christmas.  The 24 days leading up to Christmas are celebrated and often a small gift is opened each day as a sign of love and sharing among family.  So, to create my version of an Advent Calendar, I turned a 24 Pocket, Plastic Over-the-Door Shoe Holder into a Christmas Countdown Gift Holder.

Here’s the 411 on how my gift holder came to life….

To make my Christmas Countdown Gift Holder, I gathered the following supplies:

And then I went to work embellishing all 24 pockets.  I decorated each of the pockets differently, and numbered each pocket to correspond to the 24 days leading up to Christmas.  Pocket #1 holds a gift to be opened on Dec. 1st; the gift in pocket 2 will be opened on Dec. 2nd and so on thru Dec. 24th.

Here’s an up close look at a few of  the pockets.

I hope you enjoyed my version of an Advent Calendar, and that every day during this holiday season brings you joy and happiness!

Oh Christmas Tree!

I’m a sucker for unique Christmas Tree decor.  I love it when someone steps out of the traditional Christmas box and creates a tree with loads of personality and flair.  Here are a few really stunning Christmas trees, that may inspire you to go a little crazy this year.

All You

I love the white tree decorated with bright and colorful ornaments.  This tree just makes me smile.

All You

Red Accents really bring this tree to life, and the mix of eclectic ornaments adds to the fun.

Simple and Sophisticated!

Country Living

Even without a ton of ornaments you can create a really pretty tree.  The bright colors, variety of ornament shapes and long dangling glass ornaments all are it took to make this tree stand out.

Designed by the uber talented Tobi Fairley for her daughter’s play room.  The monkey theme is so adorable.

Southern Living

I love a potted Christmas tree, and the turquoise ornaments and ribbon just make this tree single–Joy To The World.

Do you have a unique Christmas Tree decor you’d like to share?  Send me photos and I’ll share with my readers.

The Stockings Were Hung…

When it comes to decorating for the holidays, beautiful Christmas Stockings are an essential item on my decorating list.  And, because I try to change-up my Christmas decorating theme each year, I’ve unknowingly become a “collector” of Christmas Stockings.

Here’s a round-up of my favorite holiday stockings and a few fabulous mantle photos to inspire your holiday decorating.

In one of the homes I decorated this year, animal print ribbon was used on the tree.  I fell in love with the look and then I saw these to-die-for stockings.  Next year my holiday theme may just to have a touch of animal print in it.

Who says a holiday stocking has to be shaped like a boot?  I love the look of this whimsical mantle, using knit mittens as stocking stand-ins.

These Mackenzie Childs stockings are too cute for words.  I love the jewel tone colors, embellishments around the cuff and that adorable puff ball on the tip of the toe.  Available at Neiman Marcus

On many of the blogs I read, I’m seeing a trend in all white Christmas decor.  I love the clean, fresh love of this color statement.  The tree above is simple but so beautiful, and the stockings below are just dreamy.

DIY MEMO BOARD

Happy Thanksgiving week to everyone

Today, I just wanted to share a little DIY Memo Board project I recently created for the May Arts Ribbon blog.

This is a really fun and simple project, one that you can interpret in any size and design.  I think a larger size would work great in a kitchen or mud room!

DIY PROJECT: FALL CANDLEHOLDERS

Since the temperature has dropped a few degrees, I’ve been motivated to begin decorating for fall.  When I pulled out my fall tabletop decor, I decided to add a little something new to the mix this year, and created these beautiful Ribbon Wrapped Candleholders.

Since I love burning candles, and love getting creative with ribbon, I thought these candleholders would really bring my dining room centerpiece to life.

You can find the full DIY steps on my blog post for May Arts Ribbon, here!

Here are a couple of shots of my Ribbon Wrapped Candleholders all lit up, as part of my fall dining table centerpiece.

What’s your favorite fall decor?

Happy Fall Y’all

Last week the temperatures dropped to the 80’s here in Atlanta, the morning air began to show signs of crispness and all I could think about was decorating for fall. Fall is one of my favorite seasons.  I love the warm colors that represent fall; I love the texture of fall leaves and pinecones; and I really love sunflowers–my favorite fall flower.

So, in honor of the approaching season, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite fall decorating ideas with you.

Pumpkins and gourds are one of my favorite fall decorating elements.  I love mixing oranges and yellows together, and throwing in a white pumpkin or two for a pop.  Aren’t white pumpkins one of natures most beautiful things?

If you want to decorate in a specific color scheme, you can always spray paint your pumpkins any color you want.

I love creating pumpkin topiaries at my front door.  Just remove the plants from your planters and stack pumpkins (real or faux) to create a topiary.  For the early part of the fall, use plain pumpkins and then switch them out for something a bit more whimsical for Halloween.

Your front door is a great place to do some creative fall decorating. I typically place a fall wreath on my door, but just might try this look, this year.  This arrangement uses tin cans that have been dressed up with ribbons, and then filled with fresh flowers. Simple and elegant.

Or you can deck out your front door with a decorative mirror and some fall foliage.

Here’s a really beautiful centerpiece idea.  To create these flower pumpkins, simply hot glue flower heads over the entire surface of  a small pumpkin. How adorable.

I love decorating with pinecones, not only because they are free from nature, but because of their texture and shape.  To create this candle arrangement, simple wire pinecones together to create a circle.  Place a glass hurricane in the middle and add a few red berry sprigs for added color and texture.  This look can carry your into the Christmas season too.

Well, I guess it’s time to pull out my fall decor and begin decorating.  I’m  going to try something new for my dining room centerpiece this year and will show you the results when it’s all done.

Until then,  Happy Fall Y’all!
