New Entertaining & Design Books To Love

Design books are one of my guilt pleasures!

Yes, I use them for design inspiration and decorating but books just make me happy.  Every January and July I pop into my favorite book wholesaler  at the Atlanta Gift and Furniture market and treat myself to a few new books.  The vendor I shop with has most of the new and upcoming releases so I can actually flip through the book to get a feel for the images and content before I purchase. I don’t know about you but when it comes to design books the images can make or break a purchase.

Here are the books you’ll want to check out and add to your bookshelf …

Favorite Items from The Atlanta Gift & Furniture Market

Happy Monday!  If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been, let’s just say in the land of busy.  In addition to spending 9 days at the Atlanta Gift & Furniture Market, I’ve also been knee-deep in working on a design project and gearing up for another year as board president of a local non-profit.  Even though it’s only the 3rd week of January, I feel like Christmas was ages ago and the days are flying by at lightening speed.

To mark the return to a normal posting schedule, I wanted to share a few of the items I spotted at AmericasMart.  If you’re unfamiliar with the Atlanta Gift & Furniture Market,  you can read all about it here.

First up is one of my favorite lighting companies, Currey & Company. The company is best known for their stylish lighting but they also sell beautiful accent furniture and accessories.

The inlaid wood pattern on the Benedict Credenza grabbed my attention first and then I noticed the sleek brass hardware.  I envision this piece being placed under a wall-mount TV or as a buffet/bar cabinet in a dining room.

There were lots of beautiful lighting fixtures introduced at market but the two below really stood out.  The Frogmore Lantern is designed with an intricate leaf design and gold-leaf finish. #goldisheretostay  Can’t you just see this beauty hanging over a garden tub or kitchen island?

Retro designs are not my personal style but I loved everything about the Gino Chandelier.  The tapered cone design and matte black finish give it just the right amount of sexiness.  This fixture would look stunning hanging over a glass or marble top dining table.

I’m sure many of you have come across products from Palecek before but probably don’t know much about the company.  The company is over 40 years old and has a foundation in manufacturing products using natural fibers, renewable materials and environmentally friendly hardwoods.  Their style is distinctive with products designed around simple details and organic shapes.

Anything in brass and leather is sure to grab my attention and this Alexander Chair did just that.  I loved the fresh, modern take on a classic directors chair and would use a pair of these chairs in a reading room or study.

Ottomans are one of my go-to accent furniture pieces and it was refreshing to come across this one covered in something other than fabric.  The Fritz Rope Ottoman is wrapped in natural and black seagrass rope creating the look of an upholstered piece.  A pair of these would be great in a sunroom or outdoor covered patio.

Palecek from Atlanta Gift and Furniture Market--Jan. 2017

Gabby Home is a product line that is known for stylish pieces and vintage designs. Their style offering ranges from contemporary and modern to traditional and classic.

I loved the lines of their Julian Coffee Table with gold trim detail.  And because I believe every room needs a touch of black, this coffee table would be ideal to add dram and depth to a living room.

I spotted lots of acrylic pieces at market so expect that trend to be around for a while.  The antique gold frame in their Johnson Dining Chair updated the classic acrylic chair design and elevated the style.

When I had my store, Uttermost was one of my top vendors.  Uttermost has one of the best selections of oversized mirrors on the market and are also known for their accent furniture and lighting.  This market I came across several new accessory and accent lighting pieces in their line that I loved.

The acrylic and brass Balkan Tray was stunning and I’ve already got it tagged for a design client to use on a hallway console table.

I’ve been on the hunt a brass or gold tone pendant light and loved the rod design and gold-leaf finish on their Glam Mini Pendant.  They are the perfect design and size to hang over a kitchen peninsula.

And how about this chic gold and glass Natasia Accent Table?  Wouldn’t this look great in between two comfy arm chairs?  I could also see it being used nestled into a corner in a powder room to hold accessories and functional items.

If you want to make a statement with your bookshelf decor, then check out E. Lawrence.  In addition to their wholesale business they also have an e-commerce site that anyone can purchase from.  Unlike many manufacturers, E. Lawrence sells just one thing…beautiful decorative books.  Their product offering ranges from traditional leather-bound books to books with stylish covers.    Their newest collections included a quotation series (which I love) and lots of metallic finishes.

And finally there’s Go Home.  This is another company I purchased from when I had my store.  I love their eclectic mix of products which include furniture, decorative accessories, lighting and bar accessories.

The Collete Coffee Table is a great piece for a smaller space and I love the gold frame and design detail that supports the top and bottom shelves.

Among their decorative accessories, Go Home carries lots of great basket styles.  I loved this collection of Shumer Baskets which have a classic blue and white design and fun leather carry handles.

One of the industrial designs I fell in love with was the Rockwell Coffee Table which has a gorgeous finish and brass label pulls.

I hope you enjoyed this mini tour around the Atlanta Gift & Furniture Market. This is just a glimpse at the thousands upon thousands of new products introduced during the show.  You can expect to see these pieces and all of the new design trends hitting stores soon and online shops soon.  I’ll be back next week to share more insights on the hot trends for 2017.

Along with checking the new furniture and decor introductions at market, I also shop for new design books. #bookjunkie

Tomorrow I’ll share some of the new book titles that you’ll definitely want to add to your Amazon shopping cart.

My Latest Flea Market Finds–Road Trip Treasures

Flea Market Finds

Whenever we drive to see my mom in Oklahoma, we plan a few pit stops at flea markets and antique stores along the way.  I typically find an item or two but nothing to brag about.  This trip however was different.  I lucked upon lots of unique pieces at great prices. Most of what I found will go in my Etsy shop but I am keeping a couple of items for myself.

Staffordshire dogs are really popular right now and I found a couple of different dog pieces.  The first was this single dalmatian figurine.  I know these were originally sold in a set as bookends but as a single it makes a great decor pieces for a bookshelf.

Flea Market Finds

The other dog pieces I found was this set of dalmatian bookends.  I’m tempted to keep these but into the Etsy shop they’ll go.

Flea Market Finds

This blue and white lidded jar is so cute.  If it wasn’t for its petite size you’d think it was a garden stool.  I snapped this piece up for $5.00 and I’m going to keep it for myself.

Flea Market Finds

I’m also on the look out for brass trays and this one had beautiful details.  It’s pretty large in size and would make a great bar tray.

Flea Market Finds

I love milk glass and see these bowls quite often but have never purchased one.  The embossed fruit motif on the bottom is so intricate and pretty and the bowl is super heavy.

I don’t know how long the brass pineapple trend is going to last but I keep buying them if I can find them at a good price.  I already own two so I’m going to be listing this lidded piece in the shop after I clean it up a bit.

Flea Market Finds

This pretty brass letter holder has me in a quandary…sell or keep?  The design is really pretty and you can tell its a great quality piece. Since I have good luck selling letter holders in my shop I’ll probably sell this one.

I also found a silver-plated one that needs some TLC.  It was less than $3.00 so if it doesn’t clean up well I’ll just keep it.

Flea Market Finds

My favorite find of the trip was this ceramic elephant stool.  It’s in great condition and I practically stool it from the dealer with the price they had on it.

Don’t you just love my latest flea market finds?

For those of you living in Memphis, you might want to check out the Antique Mall Warehouse.  I found most of the chinoiserie  and brass pieces there.

Coloring Books for Design Fanatics

Colored Pencils

via

Ok, its confession time.  How many of you have coloring books?

I jumped on the coloring book craze when it first starting gaining popularity.  As a creative, I’ve loved coloring my entire life and the idea of a coloring book for adults was so up my alley that I couldn’t resist.  My first coloring book was this one filled with Beautiful Patterns just like the title says.  I was drawn to the abstract and intricate designs which are perfect for someone like me that is a ‘coloring inside the lines’ kind of gal.

Beautiful Patterns--Coloring Books

Since my first coloring book I’ve been gifted several others by family and friends and now switch back and forth between books so none of them gets neglected.

Recently I read that several of my favorite bloggers (and authors) are jumping on the coloring book wagon and developing home decor themed books.  I can’t wait!

John and Sherry from Young House Love have their coloring book, Color At Home coming out in October and from the looks of the cover image, it is going to be a good one.  The cover image resembles many of the beautiful rooms you see on Pinterest.

Color At Home--Cover Coloring Books

And Melissa, the blogger and author behind The Inspired Room blog has a coloring book coming out in July, aptly named The Inspired Room Coloring Book.

The Inspired Room--Coloring Books

Melissa shared a few pages from her book on her blog and it is also looks like it’s going to be a fun book.  I love that there will be room environments along with individual home decor items to color. I see a whole lot of #chinosierie inspiration in my future.

The Inspired Room Coloring Books

The Inspired Room Coloring Books

I don’t know who or why the adult coloring book trend started but I think it’s only going to get bigger and home decor coloring books take it to a new level.   Being able to color design a room in any color combination you want can provide great visual inspiration for someone decorating a room in their home.

For those of you that can’t wait until the Color At Home and The Inspired Room Coloring Book come out, here are a couple other home decor related coloring books I found.

Color Me Cluttered–The title and cover image of this coloring book might scare off a lot of people but I’m really intrigued by the artwork and potential transformation that can happen after a few hours of coloring. And the minute I saw the image of the gift wrap, I was hooked.

Off the Bookshelf–This coloring book contains a range of images, many of bookshelves and home decor scenes and others more random.  This book was also designed using a slightly heavier paper weight so you don’t have any color bleeding if you use markers to color your images. And I like that each page is perforated making it easy to tear out the pages and frame as artwork.

Off The Bookshelf--Cover Coloring Books

Now that I’ve got you itching to purchase a few coloring books, you’ll also need to buy some great pens or markers.  I switch between using pencils and markers when I color.  If I want more intense color on the image I go with markers and if I’m looking for a softer effect, I tend to choose colored pencils.  Here are several brands that love and in most cases own myself so I can highly recommend these from personal experience.

Coloring Book Tools--Coloring Books

No. 1  Prismacolor is definitely my favorite brand for markers and I also love their colored pencils.  They sell a variety of styles at price points from affordable to expensive.   The Premier 24 pk. Colored Pencil Set is a great value, includes enough colors so that you have lots of options to work with and the pencils are ideal for blending colors.  There are larger sets available too.

No. 2  Tomboy Dual Brush Pen Art Markers are great because of the dual brush heads and because the pens are odorless, bendable and non-bleeding.

No. 3 I’ve owned a set of Uchida Le Plume II Double Ended Markers for many years and they still work like a charm.  They’ve traveled with us when we moved for Seattle to Atlanta and I’ve only had a few dry up. The extra-fine tip is great for intricate designs and the pens are easy to handle and won’t cramp your hand.

No. 4  For those of you that might want to take your coloring on the road or in the air, here’s a great set of 48 Marco Affine Artist Quality Pencils that include the roll-up case.  While I don’t own this exact set, I am considering purchasing a case to hold my pencils.  I like this case but if you’re looking for a great deal, you’ll want to scoop this case up.

No. 5  The 72-piece Prismacolor Premier Double Ended Art Marker set is for the serious color artist and crafter because these markers are an investment.  This is another set that I’ve owned for years and just love.  These markers provide a very saturated color and work great for blending.  I also love them because once applied, the color is consistent with no blending or start/stop lines.

Coloring books for adults is a pretty cool thing in my book.  I’m a big fan and encourage you to give it a try is you haven’t already.

Filing the Nook–Decorating Around Your Fireplace

DECORATING YOUR FIREPLACE NOOK

Empty Fireplace Nook

Elements of Style

You’ve seen them, those little nooks that sit next to a fireplace and sometimes hold built-in shelving.  I’m a big fan of built-in shelving but sometimes builders skimp on the cost and effort of putting them in so a homeowner is left with an empty nook space to fill.

When Ikea came on the scene,  bloggers and design enthusiast starting creating custom looking shelving with Billy Bookcases gave them the look of built-in but with a tremendous cost savings.

Laura Ramsey, interior designer, home design vignettes,

Laura Ramsey Furniture & Interior Design

Now, if you’re not a DIYer and you don’t want to go to the expense of hiring someone to build bookcases, there are some creative alternatives to filling those nooks that flank your fireplace.

♦ CREATE AN AREA TO SIT AND LOUNGE

I love window seats and this just might be the next best thing, a comfy upholstered banquet.  What’s also great about this design option is the wall space that you’d have to hang a beautiful mirror or piece of artwork.

Fireplace Nook1

Roses and Rust

♦  ADD FLOATING SHELVES

Floating shelves will afford you the same function as a built-in bookcase but are much easier to install and they have a more organic feel to them.  Using reclaimed wood for the shelves is also a great way to add charm to your decor.  Ikea has lots of affordable floating shelf options but this one and this one are my favorites.

Blackband Design2

♦  CREATE A WORKSPACE IN THE NOOK

Creating a desk or workspace within the nook is a great way to make this area functional.  I love the idea of a wall unit that can be closed up and concealed when not in use, enhancing the visual appeal.

Fireplace Nook3

Better Homes and Gardens

♦  FILL THE NOOK WITH TABLES & DECOR

You can always fill the nook area with a piece of accent furniture like a demo-lune table, cabinet or console table.  This look works great if you style is traditional and you like symmetry in your decor.

Fireplace Nook4

Better Homes and Gardens

♦  ANCHOR THE AREA WITH FREE-STANDING BOOKCASES

Free standing bookcases are always an option and provide great flexibility if you like to change-up your decor from time to time.  This bookcase/cabinet combo is a great option and I love this glass front option.

Fireplace Nook5

Decor Pad

♦  HANG SOME ARTWORK

If wall space is limited in the room where you fireplace is, you might want to leave the nook area free of furniture and use the wall space to hang a collection of artwork.

Fireplace Nook6

Country Living

♦ ACCESSORIZE THE NOOK WITH FURNITURE & DECOR

My favorite approach to decorating the nook is to make a creative statement with a combination of furniture, art and decorative accessories.

If you have bookshelves next to your fireplace or will be adding some to your decor, here are a few styling tips to keep in mind…

♥  Paint the back of your bookshelves to add a color pop and visual interest.  Depending on the accessories you use, they might also pop better against a colorful backdrop.

♥  Use an eclectic mix of accessories for visual interest and to add personality to the room.

♥  Create visual depth by placing item front and back along each shelf and use items of different heights to create depth top to bottom.

♥  Arrange books vertically and horizontally to create movement for the eye to follow within the overall arrangement.

The fun part of decorating is to make the most of the space you have and putting your own spin on  your decor.

My Favorite Things 2015!

Slide1

Last year I started a holiday series entitled 30 Days of Holidays.  I had such a blast sharing all kinds of holiday decorating, wrapping, gifting and entertaining ideas that I’ve decided to run the series again this year.

The 30 Days of Holidays series will kick off on Nov. 24th with the first of my holiday gift guides.  I’ve been shopping my favorite stores and online shops to bring you the best gifts to give (or put on your list) this Christmas.  As part of the series I’ll also be sharing holiday DIY projects, gift wrap ideas and my holiday decor.

Since I’ve got holiday gifts on my mind, I thought it would be fun to share my personal gift list with you.  These are all items that I’d buy for myself (and in some cases already have) or would love to find under the tree on Christmas morning.

Enjoy and let me know which item is your favorite!
