It Was Breathtaking

I hope everyone had a great Memorial day weekend.  Mine was fantastic for several reasons:

  1. I got the stack of papers on my desk under control…
  2. I caught up on a little magazine reading, and…
  3. I had the opportunity to spend a little time at Camp Boxwoods.

Camp Boxwoods, located in Madison, GA is the weekend retreat of Randy and Dan, the owners of one of my all time favorite stores here in Atlanta, Boxwoods Gardens and Gifts!

I’ve heard so many wonderful things about Camp Boxwoods and have seen pictures of the property in magazines, so when the opportunity for me to attend their Memorial Day BBQ came up, I was thrilled to pieces.

My friend Karen invited the hubby and I along for the adventure and let me just tell you it was beyond spectacular!

Here’s Karen at the entrance to the side yard.

Set amongst 120 acres, this gorgeous house is the first thing you see when you wind your way up the gravel road and across the beautifully landscaped bridge.

Since parking was a short distance away from the house, a horse and carriage were available to take you on a leisurely ride up the road.  Such Southern Charm!

The property is surrounded by two ponds, lush greenery and beautiful flower beds.

A deck at one of edge of the pond created the perfect spot for relaxing in the sun.

Here’s the hubby soaking in all the beauty! And Karen and I enjoying the day.

We toured the vegetable garden which was overflowing with lettuce, cabbage, corn and herbs.

The cabbage was the size of an ottoman!

There were collections of pot all around the garden, just waiting for their own special plant.

After the vegetable garden, it was off to see the farm animals.

I expected to see a cow or two, but not this…..

or this…

or these…

and, especially not this…

If I were a chicken, I’d definitely want to hang out in this stylish chicken coop.

Fresh eggs at your beckon call.

I loved seeing the symbol of my zodiac sign…too cute!

And then it was on to the house….

Porches wrapped around the entire front of the house.

And the attention to detail, inside and out was incredible…

The floor of the foyer, hand painted by the owners.

Hand applied pinecone details, done by the owners!

Even the pups had a stylish watering hole.

The flowers inside the home were just as beautiful as those outside!

The views from inside the home were breathtaking.

There was beauty everywhere.

Dining Tables set out in the yard…

The Dove House…

The Vineyard…

Camp Boxwoods is one of the most stunning homes I’ve ever seen.  Randy and Dan were so gracious and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to spend a day at their beautiful weekend retreat.

Thank you Randy and Dan,  for letting us share your little slice of heaven!

I don’t think the lama liked sharing the photo-op!

Hope your weekend was as spectacular as mine!

Kitchen Style…It’s In The Details

Decorating and creating ambience in the kitchen is one of the most challenging design projects one can undertake.

What really makes a kitchen stand out are the details.

What I Bought–Antique Shopping

I’ve done a lot of antique shopping lately.  One of my friends is a big collector of silver serving pieces and she’s been teaching me everything there is to know about silver.

Currently, there is a big demand for sterling silver pieces.  In the last year along, the price per ounce has increased dramatically, which is prompting many people to buy up sterling to sell it to dealers for the money.  And, unfortunately, many dealers are melting the sterling down versus reselling it to collectors.

Although less and less sterling silver pieces can be found in the market today, silver plated pieces are still readily available and just as beautiful.

When it comes to decorating and entertaining,  I’ve never really incorporated fancy silver into my home, simply because my design style is a bit more causal and rustic.

After spending the last few weekends hitting antique shops and flea markets, I’ve discovered a new appreciation and love for silver. I love the versatility that silver pieces offer, as flower containers, wall decor , decorative bowls or even vanity trays.

Last weekend, another friend drove me to Madison, Georgia, about an hour  from Atlanta.  Madison is a quaint little town, known for its tree lined streets, antique shops. historic buildings and southern charm.

I loved the street signs, pointing out all the attractions.

Here’s the old historic bank building.  The ceiling  of this overhang was covered it old rustic metal ceiling tiles and the carved columns showed their years of weathering.

The sidewalks were all paved in brick and many of the store fronts had their original details.

We took a stroll past the African-American Museum, located in a house built in 1895.

Amongst the many antique shops was this  wonderful garden store, overflowing with beautiful plants and flowers.

There was a farmers market and street fair going on, with lots of fresh vegetables and hand-crafted items.

Madison Markets was one of our stops.  This shop/warehouse was filled to the brim with all types of antiques and furnishings.

I loved these framed arched windows, inserted into a cutout with in the store.

Wouldn’t this scale look great on a kitchen island, filled with fresh fruit?

A little silver and crystal

I fell in love with this standing wire basket.  I’d use it to store all my ribbon spools.

Old doors and a charming antique baby crib.

So, with lots of antique shopping and silver knowledge under my belt, I made a few purchases.

Silver plated tray with carved border–$15.00.  Isn’t this gorgeous!

Small silver dish and pedestal bowl–$4.00 each.  Great for soaps or to hold jewelry.

Scalloped Silver Tray–$9.00

Tall pedestal bowl–$7.00

Round pedestal bowl–$6.00

What do you think, did I do good or what?

With my new found silver pieces, I think I can officially say I’ve become a silver collector.

Gotta, run.  A few antique stores are calling my name.

Have a great weekend.

Bits of Inspiration: Cobalt Blue

How often do you see an item and for whatever reason you just can’t seem to get that item out of your mind.  My latest “mind bend” is the result of one of Target’s latest home decor collections and this cobalt blue lamp.

via Target–Sabrina Soto Collection

Every time I see the ad on tv showcasing this lamp and that blue paisley pillow, I just want to jump through the screen and grab them up.

I don’t exactly know why I’m loving Cobalt Blue these days, because it’s not a color that I typically wear or decorate with.

Maybe it’s because I recently flipped through one of my favorite design books, by one of my design idols, and was reminded of the refreshingly crisp and stylish look that blue and white always creates.

Or maybe it’s because of the gorgeous cobalt blue fashions I’m seeing in magazines and on the runways.

Or maybe it has something to do with all the attention on this upcoming event.

Whatever is fueling my obsession for blue and white, has brought a burst of energy to my design perspective.  I hope that one day soon, I’ll have the opportunity to design and blue and white space and turn my bits of inspiration into reality.  Until then, here’s a design board I created inspired by Cobalt and White.

What’s your current color obsession?

Daily Dose of Design–Unique Lighting

Have you ever noticed how lighting can change the feel and look of a space?

Above and beyond the physical light that a fixture gives off, the style of the fixture you choose can enhance or detract from the look of a room.

I always look for lighting that is compatible with the style of room I’m working on, but with its own character.  Lighting that is too similar to the overall style of a room can sometimes blend in and go unnoticed, versus standout and enhance a space.

Here are a few looks I love.

Colored chandeliers are a great way to add a splash of color to a room.

Paper lanterns are being used in design a lot these days and are an inexpensive way to add unique lighting to your home.

Ever thought about using outdoor lighting indoors?  It’s a great option, especially is spaces that need more causal, oversized ceiling fixtures.

Double hung chandeliers are great in bedrooms or dining rooms.

I love when I step into a room and see a light fixture or lamp that is unexpected.  Not only does the room feel more stylish, but the lighting adds a point of  interest that gives the room character.

What lights up your life?

Adventures From the Road

The hubby and I love traveling via car.  We make it a point to stop in cities that we’ve never visited before, and I definitely make it a point to check out some of the local shops wherever we are.

Last weekend we hit the road for Little Rock, Arkansas.  With a 8 hour trip ahead of us, we settled into the car, me with magazines in hand, and the hubby with a stash of cd’s to keep him entertained.

When we were about an hour outside Little Rock, I began making a list of the shops I wanted to visit before we headed to the hotel, and then, we ran into this…..
A massive traffic jam created when two tracker trailers collided and burst into flames. Thankfully no one was hurt.

During our “layover” we took time to walk up and down the highway and even met a trucker who lives in the same small town as my mom.  It really is a small world.

After an hour and a half of sitting on the freeway, we finally made our way to Little Rock.  With only enough time to visit one shop, we headed directly to Cobblestone and Vine.

This store is listed as one of the premier home decor stores in Little Rock and trust me, it really is.  Filled with beautiful furnishings and unique gifts, this store was a shopping paradise. It really made me miss The Scarlet Tassel.

With a couple of purchases in my bag, we headed to our hotel, The Peabody in downtown Little Rock.  The Peabody hotel chain is one of our favorites, not only because of the great accommodations but also because of the daily duck parade.

If you’ve never stayed at a Peabody Hotel and seen the ducks, you’re missing a special event. The ducks hop on an elevator and make their way down to the lobby of the hotel. Once in the lobby, they march across the red carpet and jump into the large water fountain. After a brief swim, they make their way back to their little duck palace.

Here’s the view from our room, overlooking the Arkansas River.

And, to make you feel right at home, every bathroom has a cute little bar of duck soap.

Since it was our first time in Little Rock, we took a drive to check out some of residential areas.  Little Rock has some of the most beautiful homes I’ve seen.  There is a mix of styles, from traditional Southern  to Tuscan inspired homes like this one.

Before we settled in for the night, we spent a couple of hours in the lobby bar listening to this great jazz duo.  A glass of wine and smooth jazz… a great way to end the evening.

Saturday morning, I made my way to Design Camp at the Tobi Fairley art studio and design office.  It was so awesome to meet Tobi in person and spend the day learning about design from such a talent. Tobi has such a passion for design and her spirit and enthusiasm about her business was clear in all that she shared with us.  It’s no wonder she is such a success.

I met a great group of women at the class, all of use building our design worlds in one way or another.  I look forward to getting to know each and every one of them better and hope our paths will cross again soon.

At the end of design camp, the hubby and I jumped back in the car and started the second leg of our trip.

In a few days, we’ll be making our way back to Atlanta, stopping to check our a few new sights along the way.  I’ll be sure to share any adventures we encounter on the return trip, so stay turned.

Until then….safe travels wherever you go!

Daily Dose of Design–Pattern Mixing

I started my career in the fashion industry, so working with patterns and combining them to create unique looks is something I love to do.  I love the way plaids plays off florals, and the way stripes enhance geometric patterns.

I view patternwork in fashion like I do in design…patternwork adds style, personality and flair.  It can complete the look or it can be the starting point for a fabulous design statement!

Patternwork can take a simple space from ordinary to outstanding. Often, it’s the patternwork that gives a space it unique identity.

Here a combination of traditional toiles, florals, stripes and checks give this focused color statement depth and interest.  I especially love the trim details used on the pillows, creating even more style.

Bold pattern statements work great in rooms where the wall color has been toned down.  The pattern in the floral rug is repeated on pillows and colors are pulled out and used as pops within the room.  Love the coral ottoman and lampshade.

Two different variations of  stripes and three variations of the floral pattern enhance the comtemporary style of this space.  I’m not typically a fan of stripes on a sofa but this stripe works for me.

This is a very sophisticated mix of patterns, but it works because the color palette is focused and the pattern scales vary in size.

I love the bold argyle pattern on the upper wall, combined with the subtle damask on the lower wall & the teal pattern of the tablecloth.  Subtle patternwork can be just was dynamic as more colorful statements.

The grass cloth walls and woven blinds add textured pattern to this space.

Love this bold pattern statement.  Bold colors are all the rage right now and this combination of cobalt blue and apple green is so refreshing.  I am so loving deep shades of blue these days, and the new blue line of home decor products from Target is speaking to me.

Love the pattern mix used on these chairs…so charming.

It’s great when pattern mixing makes it way to outdoor spaces. Patio furniture is a great place to go bold in color or scale.

In this photo, the solid sofas are the dominate pattern within the space.  Pattern does not always have to be colorful.  You should incorporate solids to help ground the space.

When it comes to adding patterwork to a room design, I have a guidelines I follow:

  • Typically combing 4 or 5 patterns works best.  I like to combine floral, plaid, stripe and check patterns together for the most interesting mix.
  • Use color as the common demoninator. Selecting your patterns around a color palette will ensure they all work together, regardless of the type of pattern you use.
  • Add textured pattern to the mix. Woven window treatments, textured rugs or tactile lampshades add even more visual interest to the room pattern statement.  Texture is just as important as color.
  • Vary the scales with the patterns your choose.  One of the biggest mistakes you can make is having all your patternwork in the same scale.  You want one pattern to be dominate and have the others scale down from there.
  •  Patterns that run vertically will make the space look taller, while horizontal patternwork will make a space look wider.  Keep this in mind if you want to make a small space appear larger.
  • Be adventurous…combine traditional patterns with more modern prints to keep the look fresh.
  • Have fun with patternwork and use it to give your space personality.

If  you’re looking for a quick update to your decor, try adding a new pattern to the mix!

Have a great weekend!
