Happy Saturday!  I woke up this morning, stepped outside and got a whiff of fall.  It was cool outside and I noticed that the leaves are slowly starting to change on the trees.  Unfortunately the cool temps won’t last because its supposed to be in the 90’s today.  With temps like that I’m planning to stay close to home this weekend, get through my magazine stack and do a little work.  Wherever you are, I hope your weekend is great.

Here are a few of my favorite things from the week:

10 Design Ideas From The Pinewood Forest Idea Home

Pinewood Forest Idea Home--Designer Showhouse

I wasn’t able to attend the preview party for the Pinewood Forest Idea Home a couple of weeks ago but I had the opportunity to tour the house last weekend.

The Pinewood Forest Idea Home is located outside of Atlanta in Fayetteville, GA.  The eco-friendly community is being designed with energy conservation, sustainable building practices and design creativity as the foundation.  Many of Atlanta’s top interior designers were tapped to design different rooms in the house and the spaces were both beautiful and inspiring.

Today I’m going to take you on a tour of the house and share 10 inspirational design ideas that I filed away for future use.  I think you’ll love them too!

THE EXTERIOR

Pinewood Forest Idea Home--Designer Showhouse

One of the first things I noticed as I walked up to the house were the unique details.  The courtyard roof had the most beautiful carved wood beams and the perfect weathered finish.

Pinewood Forest Idea Home--Designer Showhouse

The fence surrounding the house was crafted from woven branches and twigs. Such a creative twist for an exterior design detail.

THE DINING ROOM

The dining room, designed by Jennifer Balcos of Swoox Curated Consignment had such an eclectic and artistic vibe. The oversized artwork and the black and white grid rug were two of my favorite pieces.

Pinewood Forest Idea Home--Designer Showhouse

The ceiling mounted curtain rods also caught my attention because they made the room feel so much taller and open.  This is a great idea for small rooms or space where window moldings might interfere with the rod placement.

THE LIVING ROOM

As you walked into the living room, designed by Dana Lynch Design, I noticed this large piece of artwork hung from the window frame.  And a piece of black and white art displayed on a standing easel.  I’m now smitten with the idea of not hanging art on the wall but displaying it in more creative ways.

THE KITCHEN

The kitchen, also designed by Dana Lynch was sleek and minimal.  The glass front cabinets added a fun design detail and kept the back wall from feeling heavy and dark.

THE BUTLER’S PANTRY

Right off the kitchen was the butler’s pantry with had so many creative details in it. This art piece was a showstopper and upon closer inspection, I realized it was made up of different color paint card held together by black plastic brads. #brilliant

Another feature of the butler’s pantry that I loved was this custom hanging iron shelf.  Such a cool idea!

THE LAUNDRY ROOM

Athens designer, Monica Stewart of Misfit House decorated the laundry room located around the corner from the butler’s pantry.  Although the space wasn’t large, the details she added made it a dramatic space.  The black walls and black cabinets gave the space lots of depth and I love the simple but stylish curtain hiding the storage shelf.

THE MASTER SUITE

The master suite, designed by Nikie Barfield was a tranquil retreat of soft, neutral colors. I loved the butterfly art that hung over the headboard and the console table turned nightstand.   If you have the space, a console table is a great alternative to a traditional nightstand and can serve as a vanity or desk as well.   The bench can easily be tucked under the table to save space.

GUEST BEDROOM

Two guest bedrooms and an office were on the second level of the house.  This small bedroom room designed by my friends Jennifer Schoenberger and Lindsey Hene of Elle + Vreeland Design House was so captivating. I loved the antique daybed and fabric canopy along with the eclectic mix of furniture and wall decor.

Jennifer and Lindsey’s space include this gallery wall that features a framed television that looks like a mirror when it’s not in use.  #detailsmakethedesign

GUEST BEDROOM/BATH

Julie Holloway designed the second bedroom and bath.  The bedroom featured a beautiful canopy bed from Restoration Hardware and the bathroom walls were covered in a beautiful floral paper from York.

LOUNGE SPACE/OFFICE

Down the hall from the bedrooms was a multi-room lounge space that could also serve as an office.  Jason Mitchell designed this space to feature large art panels of herons and a mix of furniture and accessories.

I loved the quilted pillows and the details on these furniture legs.

OUTDOOR COURTYARD

The courtyard outside the house was a entertainers dream.  Instead of traditional outdoor furniture, the centerpiece of the area was a large concrete and reclaimed wood dining set.

Pinewood Forest Idea Home--Designer Showhouse

I loved these oversized woven light fixtures the hung above the table and the oversize art used to accessorize the space.

TWO-STORY TOWER

Just off the courtyard was a two-story tower designed by Sherry Hart.  The space could be a mother-in-laws suite or office/creative space and had the spiral staircase that provided access to the second level.

Sherry also incorporated this cute wet bar into the space.  I love the wall sconce and wallpaper accent.

Sherry is a master at designing spaces with a relaxed but stylish vibe. I love her creative use of common items like the basket wall art and wood bench turned display shelf.

Pinewood Forest Idea Home--Designer Showhouse

The Pinewood Forest Idea Home is definitely worth checking out if you’re in the Atlanta area.  The home tour is open throughout this Sunday, Oct. 7th.  You can find all the details on the Atlanta Magazine website here.

Design Chat: Decorating Her First Home

I’m back with another installment of my Design Chat series.  This time around I’m helping Krystian who recently purchased her first home and needs some help with space planning and decorating.  Here’s the message I received…

Hello Shelly!  Good morning!   I found an article you’ve written online a couple of years ago. Although it’s older, it is still relevant to me. I recently bought a home, I’m younger and horrible at decorating. I have a brown sectional, yet I’m trying to lighten things up. What accent color can I use to lighten things up other than teal or coral? I feel these would darken things. I can’t afford to change the couch right now, so I have to work with what I have. I’m looking at a lighter colored area rug, but I’m not sure on how to position it. Would you be able to offer help? Would it go under the couch at all, or just in front? I’m really confused, all of the rule of thumbs seem a bit overwhelming! Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I asked Krystian to send me a few photos of her home so that I could see what she was working with.

THE LIVING ROOM NOW:

When you enter the house you walk directly into the living room.  The space is open with no walls or architectural details to define it.  In a space like this, the furniture and rug will that will do that.

There are three large walls within the room which make it possible for several different furniture arrangements.

With only two small windows to provide natural lighting, the colors used in the room need to brighten and enliven the space.

There is one small challenge when it comes to decorating this space. The location of the cable jack and the large wall vent that limits what you can put on that wall.

After looking over the photos and tossing around ideas, I outlined two design plans for Krystian.

This first plan uses the existing sectional and adds in new furniture pieces to finish off the space.  To add more storage and display space to the room, I recommended a console table on the wall between the windows and another on the wall to the left inside the front door.

I’m also suggesting a set of bookcases, a new tv cabinet and table lamps to enhance the lighting throughout the room.

DESIGN PLAN #1

The second plan replaces the sectional with a sofa and a pair of accent chairs. It also orients the furniture so that the sofa is on the largest wall in the room.  As with plan 1, this plan also includes a console table for storage, a new tv cabinet and side tables.

DESIGN PLAN #2

To address Krystian’s concern about the room being dark, I selected decor and accessories that will brighten the room.  Here’s a look at the decor plan I created.

AREA RUG:  I choose an area rug with a neutral background ad colorful pattern. Patternwork and color create visual movement and in turn give the impression that a room is larger than is actually is.

When it comes to selecting the right size rug, it’s always best to tape off the size on your floor to determine what will work best.  Ideally you want the front legs of furniture pieces to sit on rug.  In Krystian’s room, I recommend either a 6′ x 9′ or a 8′ x 10′.  A large rug will help define the sitting area and anchor the living room.

PILLOWS:  A good rule of thumb when buying accent pillows is to pull colors from the area rug or artwork.  Krystian can remove some of the brown and tan pillows on the sofa and replace them with more colorful options.

COFFEE TABLE:  A round coffee table is best for this room and will provide a contrast to the square and rectangular furniture pieces. A glass top will make the room feel more open.

CURTAINS:  Ivory curtain panels will add soften and another light and bright element to the room.  Framing the window with curtains will actually make the windows look larger.

CONSOLE TABLES: I’m recommending console tables in two different finishes and styles.  The iron and wood table has an open base which will add to the openness of the room. The sectioned console will be great under the TV to hold electronics and decor.  Adding a few baskets to the shelves will bring texture into the room.

ARTWORK:  Colorful artwork is one the best ways to add interest and personality to a room.  The colors in the floral artwork tie back to the colors in the rug and pillows.  And the artwork will create a focal point within the room.

LIGHTING:  Krystian’s living room can benefit from additional lighting so I’m recommending a couple of table lamps.  Ivory ceramic lamps incorporate another material into the room and ties into the other ivory elements in the space.

*****

Krystian has a great living room space to work with.  Using one of these space plans along with adding color and personality through decor will give Krystian the space she’s dreaming of.

FYI–Knowing that budget is important to Krystian as she decorates her first home, I shopped Wayfair for all of the decor.  Wayfair is one of my favorite sources for stylish and budget-friendly furniture and accessories.

Estate Sale Finds | My New Chinoiserie Pieces

Blue and White Estate Sale Finds by ConfettiStyle

I love shopping at antique stores and flea markets and every now and then I’ll hit up an estate sale.  Several times a week I’ll get an email from EstateSales.net notifying me of upcoming sales in my area.  The email tells me when a sale is happening and in most cases there are pictures of the items that are for sale.  A couple weeks ago a particular sale caught my eye and prompted me to scroll through the photos.

The photos showed the driveway filled with cast off furniture pieces and the basement  jammed packed with Christmas items.  I kept scrolling and landed on a photo of the family room where there were tables and tables of blue and white pieces.  It’s not unusual to see a few blue and white pieces at an estate sale but seeing loads of it got my heart racing.

Fast forward to the day of the sale, a Friday.  I woke up and was on the fence about going.  The sale started at 9:00 am and I had an appointment all the way across town at 10:00 am.  As I got dressed, I pondered whether or not to go and decided to stop by the sale for just a few minutes to check it out.

New Chandelier & Pendant Lighting

August 20th marked one year since we moved into our new house. Before we moved in we made some big changes like painting all the walls, ceilings, doors and stair rails.  We added hardwood floors on the lower level and gave the kitchen a facelift by painting the kitchen cabinets white.

With all the cosmetic changes made, we’ve slowly been tackling our long decorating list. Among other things, the list includes new kitchen hardware, new light fixtures throughout and decorating my office space, which I finished last month. You can see the before and after of my office space here.

Our townhouse was the model unit and had a few upgraded features.  Unfortunately lighting was not one of them.  All of the fixtures were builder grade with little to no style.  Changing out the lighting was on the top of our to-do list and slowly we are making progress.

In February I was fortunate enough to win a giveaway that Kristy Wicks had in partnership with Lamps Plus.  Since I source a lot of lighting from Lamps Plus for design clients, I was thrilled to win a $500 credit from a company that I love.  I immediately went shopping and selected a new chandelier for our dining space, new pendant lights for the kitchen and a ceiling mount for the lower entryway.

George Kovacs Pendant Lighting from Lamps Plus

Lamps Plus processed the order in a flash and my new lighting arrived on my doorstep a few days later. That was back in March and FINALLY we got around to getting the lighting installed last month.

Our kitchen counters are black granite and all of the interior doors in the house are black, so I selected black and gold lighting for the dining area and kitchen.

Here’s a look at the dining room chandelier from Christmas.  The original fixture was a grey color with dingy white lampshades.

NEW DINING  & KITCHEN LIGHTING

Our new fixture is a beauty.  It’s the Lufkin 6-light Chandelier with black shades and an antique brass frame.  I love the combination of black and brass which speaks to my love for traditional decor  and the rounded shape adds a modern vibe that I love.

**sadly the chandelier is no longer available

With an open concept main floor, our dining area and kitchen are right next to each other so the kitchen lighting had to coordinate.  I choose three of the George Kovacs Gold Mini Pendants to hang over the peninsula.

fyi–the gold arm and collar on the pendant lights was bight gold so I used antique gold Rub-n-Buff to tone down the color.  One coat gave me the finish color that matches the chandelier perfectly.

I’m thrilled with our new lighting and the transformation it made to our dining area and kitchen. The final decorative piece for the dining area was a new rug which I ordered a few weeks ago.  I shared a glimpse of it on Instagram and will have a full reveal later this week.  Stay tuned because it’s a beauty and a great price!

Lufkin Lighting Chandelier from Lamps Plus

Our project list is getting shorter but I’m glad to have a few things checked off.

If you’re in the market for stylish and affordable lighting, definitely check out Lamps Plus.  In addition to an amazing lighting selection, they also sell furniture and home decor.  One stop shopping at its best!

The Rustic Market | Acworth, GA

I like shopping at big box stores, but there’s nothing like shopping at boutique retail stores.  As a previous store owner, I know all about the hard work that goes into making these stores special.  And if you want decor that you won’t readily find elsewhere, specialty stores are where you want to shop.

One of my favorite specialty decor and gift stores in the Atlanta area is the The Rustic Market located in Acworth.  A few weeks ago I made a trip to visit the store and attend their open house event.  The store is really great and today I’m going to give you a little tour.

THE RUSTIC MARKET

Debbie, the owner of The Rustic Market opened the store several years ago and has continued to grow and expand the business.  The store is made up of three connected storefronts with open access between each space.  One section of the store has gifts and personal care items like candles and  bath and body products.  The middle section of the store is where you’ll find apparel and fashion accessories. The other side of the store is the new furniture gallery where you’ll find larger furniture pieces, wall decor, lighting and textiles.

The Rustic Market specialized in modern, farmhouse decor with beautiful wood and upholstered furniture, textiles and decorative accessories.  Their gift assortment includes a wide range of tabletop, entertaining and hostess gifts as well as a fun offering of unique baby items. I bought a set of these monogrammed dinner napkins and will be using them in my fall tablescape.

As you walk around the store, the beautiful displays will grab your attention and give you lots of decorating inspiration. And don’t forget to look high and low because there are unique items everywhere.

I love these oversized corbels used as bookends.  This would be a great statement on a mantel or hallway console table.

The black iron candle holder below was such a unique piece.  A pair of these would look great on a dining table for fall and holiday entertaining. If you love antique and vintage inspired wall decor, you’ll find lots of it in the store.

Unique Furniture, Gifts & Home Decor

The Rustic Market host open house events throughout the year so be sure to like their Facebook page to get notifications of upcoming event.  And cross your fingers that they are serving their Sangria because it is so good!

Supporting local retailers is one of the best ways to keep your city thriving and if you live in the Atlanta area, I recommend you indulge in a little retail therapy at The Rustic Market.

The Art Of High Low Style Mixing {7 Tips}

Anytime someone new comes over to my house I get asked the question, “where did you get that?”   I think the question comes up because when you look around my house you’ll notice that my decor has been curated over time and has a personalized look and feel.  I’ve decorated our house to reflect the things we love and because of that, it’s has its own flair.

My decor is  a mix of styles,  a combination of vintage and new, plus a combo of high-end pieces and budget friendly finds. The art of mixing high & low furniture and decor is one of the keys to designing a beautiful room.  Here are my tips on how to mix high and low like an Interior Design Pro!

THE FORMULA TO HIGH LOW STYLE MIXING

Tip # 1:  Invest money in the furniture pieces that will get used the most.

Don’t skimp on statement furniture that you and your family will be using on a daily basis.  Look for high-end furniture like a sofa or dining chairs that have solid construction and long wearing fabrics.  Quality pieces will elevate the style of a room and make inexpensive accessories look glam.

Tip # 2:  Be an equal opportunity shopper because finding the right item is more important than where you bought it.

An equal opportunity shopper simply means being open to shopping a variety of stores for the items you want.  Shop your favorite high-end retailers  as well as budget friendly big-box stores that might have identical or similar items for less.  And don’t count out consignment or thrift stores which can be a great source for high-end looks at a fraction of the cost.

I originally purchased this large blue and white ginger jar from a high-end furniture store.  When I decided a needed a second one to flank my fireplace, I went bargain hunting and found the almost identical jar online for $50 less.

Tip #3:  Mix materials and finishes to make a room appear more luxurious than it really is.

Adding texture into your decor is an easy way to elevate the style of a room.  Choose accessories that incorporate a variety of elements like wood, fabric and metal for a layered and custom look.  When a room has visual interest, it automatically looks and feels more polished and sophisticated.

The pieces on my bookshelves include an antique brass bowl (high-end), blue and white pottery (mid to low-end) and a disco ball that I bought on clearance (cheap).  The mix creates a curated look that feels like a grouping of treasures collected over the years.

Tip #4:  Don’t be afraid to UpStyle a low-end piece with high-end details.

I’m sure you’ve all seen how an inexpensive pieces from Ikea can be UpStyled to look like a high-end piece with a few simple enhancements.  A coat of paint, new hardware or the addition of trim work can give a simple piece high-end style.  When you’re out shopping and see an inexpensive piece evaluate its potential and how a little refurbishing could give it a whole new look.

A new set of brass knobs elevated the look of this black Ikea cabinet.  And $30 worth of fabric transformed a pair of $11 thrift store ottomans in to accent pieces that look like the cost a lot of money.

An empty room is a story waiting to happen, and you are the author!

Tip #5:  Invest in a few original pieces like artwork or handmade ceramics.

An original piece of art or handmade craft can be a worthwhile investment and elevate the style of a room.  Original pieces don’t have to cost a fortune these days.  You can find original oil paintings at antique stores or have a new piece commissioned from sites like Minted for less than $500.  Etsy is a great source for handcrafted pottery and wood decor for as little as $20.

TIP #6: Group high and low-priced decorative items by color.

Color is a unifying element and will create a sense of equality between items that are grouped together.  Group pieces of similar color on a tabletop or  pillows from the same color family on the sofa.  To keep things visually interesting, look for items with different patterns or  materials so things don’t look to matchy.

A place setting is a great place to experiment with pulling a color theme together.  With this pacesetting, I used blue and white as the theme but combined different patterns to create the interest.

TIP #7: Decorating your home is a marathon, not a sprint!

A room looks best when it is curated over time. Incorporating things that you love and that will make your home feel unique and special.

What tricks do you have for creating your personal decor style?

5 Minute DIY Facelift | An Easy Furniture UpStyle

Upholstered Bench DIY Makeover by ConfettiStyle

Never in a million years would I classify myself as a master DIY’er.  I do love to make things by hand, enjoy crafting and do take on a DIY project every now and then.  My favorite DIY projects are the ones that can be completed in a flash and don’t take a lot of manual labor.

The last few weekends I’ve tackled a few DIY projects around the house and all of them took about 5 minutes or less to complete.  I’m sharing one of the makeovers with you today.

This project was the transformation of a bench for the foot of the bed in our guest bedroom.  I bought this bench at one of my favorite flea markets about two months ago.  It’s been sitting in the bedroom ever since just waiting for a new look.  Upon inspection, the bench had a sturdy frame, classic lines and was priced right at less than $60. The fabric was the only negative.  It was soiled and worn in a few areas, and the color looked something like split pea soup.  I knew that all it would take to give the bench a facelift was new fabric and some minor touch-ups to the stain finish.

Here’s the before….

Upholstered Bench DIY Makeover by ConfettiStyle

And here’s the after!

Upholstered Bench DIY Makeover by ConfettiStyle

I purchased this fabric from my friend and upholsterer Julie, before she moved to Florida.  At the time I didn’t know what I was going to use it for, I just loved the design and the color. I mean after all, red is my favorite color!

Upholstered Bench DIY Makeover by ConfettiStyle

One day I was in the guest bedroom and looked at the bench and something dawned on me.  My red chinoiserie floral fabric would be perfect!!! I already has a couple of red elements in the room and the blue in the floral pattern worked great with the blue bedding.  I’m not sure who makes this fabric or what the design is called. If anyone knows the manufacturer or fabric name let me know and I’ll update the post.  I also found a similar fabric here.

Once the old fabric was striped off, I gave the foam a spritz of Febreze and then re-upholstered the top with my new fabric. It literally took me 5 minutes and the bench had a fabulous new look.  Isn’t she pretty?  I just love the way the bench looks now.  It’s the punch of personality the room needed.

Upholstered Bench DIY Makeover by ConfettiStyle

I’ll be sharing the full guest bedroom soon but have a few more finishing touches to add. Stay tuned!
