On The Bookshelf: New Design & Entertaining Books

New Design & Entertaining Books by ConfettiStyle

One of my favorite things to do while at the Atlanta Market is shop for design and entertaining books. I could spend hours in the showroom flipping through newly released or soon-to-be released titles.  I go in to the showroom  thinking I’ll order one or two new books and always end up ordering a few more:) Here are some of the new books I’m adding to my bookshelf and a few others I think you’ll love.

Happy reading friends!

Decor Trends 2019 ( Plus Design Tips)

Hi friends.  Boy has it been a hectic day today.  I sat down this morning to write this post thinking I would have it done early this morning.  Little did I know that one little errand would turn into an all day affair. Anyhow, here’s my post on the design and color trends I spotted at the Atlanta Gift & Home Furnishings market a few weeks ago. Along with highlighting some of the key trends, I’m giving you my take one each of them.  Plus I’m sharing a few design tips in case you want to incorporate any of these looks into your decor.

Before I jump into the trends, here’s a little background on the market I attend each year.

The market takes place twice a year and is the largest wholesale market for decor and gifts in the country.  Every January and July, manufacturers introduce new products that retail stores will be buying for the upcoming season.   The market is also where interior designers can go to source products for their clients.

I spent 9 days at market and walked away with a good take on what the hottest trends will be for spring and summer.  Here’s what I saw…

Estate Sale Tips (and my latest finds)

Estate Sale Shopping Tips by ConfettiStyle

I haven’t always loved shopping estate sales.  In fact I really didn’t get into it until about 8 or 9 years ago.  Prior to that,  I thought the only thing you found at an estate sale was furniture and tools.  Little did I know that estate sales are a treasure trove for all kinds of items including decor, tabletop items and vintage jewelry.

Several years ago I subscribed to EstateSales.net and their website changed the way I shop estate sales forever.  EstateSales.net is national listing service were companies list upcoming sales.  In addition to providing the when and where details, companies also give you a preview of the items in the sale.  As a subscriber you can choose when to be notified about upcoming sales near you.  And the sale listings include both in home and online auction sales.

Launching in 2002, EstateSales.net now gets over 30 million page views per month and is the best way to keep informed about sales in your area.

Beside the fact that you can find some amazing pieces at great price, there are several other reasons why I like shopping estate sales.

WHY I SHOP ESTATE SALES

  1. Estate sales are a great source for vintage furniture.  Just about every estate sale I attend has a drop-leaf table or two, upholstered ottomans as well as antique chairs and lighting.  In most cases the pieces are good quality and just need a face lift with fabric, paint or refinishing.
  2. I love a good bargain.  Like I mentioned early, you can find some real treasures at rock bottom prices. If you’re furnishing your home or looking for items to re-sell, these sales are a great place to shop for both vintage and new pieces.
  3. I’m looking for a DIY project.  Every now and then I’m looking for a specific item to DIY for my home.  Often times I can find the perfect piece that makes an ideal DIY project.
  4. I’m inspired by home design. I love walking through homes and being inspired by different design and architectural details.  Estate sales give me an opportunity to look at both old and new homes for design inspiration. In some cases, the homes are being torn down and some architectural elements might even be for sale.

Now that you know why I like to shop estates sales, let me show you what I found on my last outing.

A couple of weekends ago Mr. Confetti and I stopped by an estate sale on the last day.  Like most estate sales, the prices had been dropped and on this day everything was 75% off. All clothing and handbags were just $1.00.

The house was jammed packed, mostly decor, tabletop, apparel and jewelry.  We arrived early and upon entering the house, I stayed on the main floor and Mr. Confetti headed to the basement.  After about 30 minutes of shopping we met up in the living room to sort through out finds and decide what to keep.

My Latest Estate Sale Finds…

I bought 8 of these gold-rimmed dinner plates for $1.00 each.  There are no markings on the plates so I’ve been trying to find the style name and manufacturer. My gut tells me they are made by Noritake but I’m not sure.  If you know anything about this plate design, let me know.

I’m always on the hunt for blue and white pottery and found a few pieces I love.  The first was this double happiness ginger jar that was in perfect condition.  I also found this shaped lidded dish which was just a few bucks.

This set of 7 brass napkin rings were wrapped up in a plastic bag and severely tarnished.  A quick polish and their beauty was revealed.

One of the things I was most excited to find were these wood risers.  I snagged each of them for just .75 cents each.

I couldn’t pass up these three small blue and white pieces.  The blue and white flower frog will be a cute accent on a bathroom vanity or desk.  And I imagine using the two small cups to hold jewelry or office supplies.

This brass tray was another amazing find.  I immediately fell in love with the floral blossom design and bamboo style edging.

Mr. Confetti found this handled urn in the basement and it wasn’t until I got home that I noticed it was two-toned.  I love the combination of silver and gold.  The urn is a perfect for an orchid arrangement.

This brass container is a classic design and can be used for so many purposes.

I’m jazzed about the pieces I found at the sale.  Some of these items are keepers and others will be going into my Etsy shop soon.   If you’ve never been to an estate sale but are intrigued, I’ve listed a few shopping tips below that should help you.

*****

TIPS FOR SHOPPING ESTATE SALES

First day–to get the best stuff, plan to arrive early.  Any trending or under-priced items will be the first pieces to go.  The early bird definitely gets the worm at an estate sale.

Second/Third day–by the second day, the sale will be picked over and prices will most likely be slashed. The second or third day of the sale is typically the slowest which will give you a better opportunity to inspect items.  You’ll also have a better chance at negotiating prices on these days.

Last day–this is when you’ll find your best bargains. Sellers are motivate to see everything go and will definitely be open to offers.  You can even try to offer a bulk price for all the items you are interested in.

Grab and go–do a quick walk-thru of every room when you get to a sale and grab anything of interest. Once you have a pile, go through the items more throughly to determine what you’ll buy. When you find a furniture piece you like, pull the price ticket off and take it to the check out area so it will be held for you.

Look everywhere–check inside any open and accessible areas like closets, the garage and basements.  Like items aren’t always grouped together so cover every inch of the house for treasures.

Ask about unmarked items–appliances, draperies and rugs may not be marked but are often available for sale if you ask.

Cash or Check–estate sale companies like when buyers have cash or write a check to avoid the added credit card processing fee.  Make sure you have your checkbook and cash on hand when you go to a sale.

Know you measurements–if you’re shopping for furniture, have the key measurements of your home with you.  You’ll want to make sure items will fit through doorways and in the spaces you have planned.

You buy it, you load it–most estate sales will not load furniture into your car.  Make sure you have additional hands at the ready to help you load your purchases.  You might be able to come back at a later time to pick your items up but there’s always the risk that an item getting damaged or mistakenly sold to someone else while you gone.

All sales are final–check the condition of everything before you buy it.

Valentine's Day Gift Wrap Inspiration by ConfettiStyle

Once you’ve purchased your gift you’ll want to wrap them to make them extra special.  This year I’m sticking to traditional colors–red & white and keeping my wrap fun and impactful. Here are two Valentine’s Day gift wrap ideas that you can pull together in a flash.

Valentine's Day Gift Wrap Inspiration by ConfettiStyle

Similar chipboard letters here

The foundation of my wrap is a tone-on-tone white striped paper.  I wanted the paper to have a little dimension and this fit the bill perfectly.  After I wrapped the boxes, I added a few embellishments.

I wrapped the first box with red & white twine and laced the ends through a paper heart with holes punched in the center.  I made the heart from decorative scrapbook paper using a  template I downloaded here. The plaid heart gives this gift a slightly more masculine feel and I love the pattern mixing that all the elements create.

tip:  look in the wedding section of big box stores for beautiful and elegant white wrapping paper.

Valentine's Day Gift Wrap Inspiration by ConfettiStyle

For the second gift, I wrapped striped ribbon around the center of the box and tied a bow along one edge. Next I decorated the top of the box with large chipboard spelling out XOXO.  I painted the letters with red acrylic paint before attaching them to the box with double-sided tape.

I just love how my Valentine’s gift wrap turned out.  I hope these ideas will encourage you to put a little heart & love into making your gifts extra special for the ones you love!

Easing Into 2019 | And A Few Goals For The New Year

Happy 2019 friends!  If you’ve been thinking that it’s been a long time since you last heard from me, you’re right. At the end of last year, I decided to take a few weeks off from blogging and ease into 2019 at a slow pace.  Little did I know that my slow pace would turn into a snails crawl.

Let me catch you up on what’s been happening...

The holiday season was a bit of blur with Christmas and the new year coming and going in a flash. I had a wonderful Christmas and it was nice to celebrate at my mom’s house here in Atlanta.  The best part was not having to make the 11 hour road trip to Oklahoma that we always did.   The commute to see my mom is now down to about 20 minutes.

Right after the New Year,  I had a ton of work to squeeze in before heading off to the Atlanta Gift and Furniture Market. Every January and July I attend market and to shop the latest trends in the home decor and gift industry.  I also put my  retail expertise to work and assist buyers with their orders in the largest showroom at the mart.  In total, I spend 9 or 10 long days soaking in all the market fun.

On the last day of market, I felt a tickle in my throat and immediately took some cold medicine.  The next morning I woke up and felt like I had been hit by a truck.  All the germs that were floating around market caught up with me and I was down for the count.  I had what felt like a combination of a cold and the flu for more than 10 days.

p.s.  I’m working on a trends post from market and will share it on the blog next week.  Here are a few sneak peek photos.

Fast forward to last Thursday when Mr. Confetti finally encouraged me to go see the doctor.  Luckily I didn’t have the flu but I did have a severe cold, a fever and a sinus infection. Doc hooked me up with some meds and I’m feeling much better and finally have the energy to get back to my routine.

Beautiful Life Happy Planner

So that brings us to today…

I wanted to pop in to let you know that I’m still here and have been working on lots of things to share with you in 2019.  I didn’t feel on top of my blogging game in 2018 so a major goal this year is to deliver more consistent, inspirational and personalized content.  One of the things I’m brining back is the monthly installment of my Inspiration Notebook. The notebook is my way of journal what’s inspiring me each month as well as visualizing some of my monthly goals.

I’m also relaunching a few of the popular series I’ve had on the blog including the Design Guide series, Product + Inspiration and a lots of tablescape and entertaining inspiration. All of these series are at the core of what ConfettiStyle is all about–A Guide For Stylish Living!

10 Designer Tricks Of The Trade

I’ve also have big house goals this year and will share the projects as I tackle them.  To keep me on track, I created a thorough ”to do” list, which breaks down my project goals room-by-room.  My list will keep me focused on what needs to get done in each room and become a source of happiness as I cross each project off the list.

I’ll be sharing my detailed Home Goals list next week so you have an idea of what I’ll be working on.

Whew!  The year is only just beginning and I’m already tired thinking about all the plans I have.

Before I sign off, I want to take a moment and say Thank You to all of my faithful followers.  It means a lot to me that you allow me into your world to inspire you.  2019 is going to be a great year and I look to sharing it all with you.

Cheers!

Shop The Dillard’s New Year’s Day Sale Like A PRO

Dillards

Hi friends. I shared this post back in 2016 and had request to share it again so here it is.  If you’re looking for great deals on clothing and home decor, you’ll definitely want to shop the Dillard’s sale.  And before you head out to shop, read my tips so you can shop it like a pro!

*****

THE PROS & CONS

If you haven’t ever attended the sales at Dillard’s, let me give you an overview.  Dillard’s only has a couple of sales throughout the year and their New Year’s Day sale is the biggest and baddest (in a good way).  On New Year’s Day only, all of their marked downed items are and additional 50% off.  That might not seem like a big deal but considering that most of the store in marked down this sale is awesome.

I first learned about this sale a few years ago and was amazed at the deals. I was able to score–designer handbags, boots, winter clothing, holiday tabletop and more, all at fantastic savings.

THE PROS:  Major savings on in-season items, designer styles, seasonal items and linens.  The sale also gives you the perfect opportunity to begin shopping for Christmas next year.

THE CONS:  This is where is gets crazy.  The store will be mobbed so expect a crowd, some shoving and lots of grabbing.  Specific ares of the store (handbags and shoes) even have police officers stationed in them to help control the mass of people.

Dillards2

SHOP THE DILLARD’S SALE LIKE A PRO:

♦  Get to the store early!!!  Call your local store today and find out what time they open and then plan to be at the store at least 30 minutes before they open.  If there’s a specific section of the store you want to shop, go to the door nearest that section.

If you want to shop handbags, I recommend you arrive at the store 1 hour before it opens.  Store in Atlanta opened at 9:00 am and the line outside the handbag dept. starting forming at 7:30 am.

♦  Wear a cross-body bag or back pack so your hands are free.  You don’t want to be carrying a handbag when your arms will be filled with items to purchase.

♦  Dress comfortably and think about wearing your running shoes because there just might be some running involved.  I’m kinda kidding but not really.  You will see people running to the handbag department so if handbags are your thing, you’ll want run, not walk.  And if you plan on buying shoes, wear a pair you can slip in and out of easily so you can try on shoes in a flash.

Shop and sort later.  This is one sale where you won’t have time in most departments to look and linger.  When you see something you’re interested in, pick it up and put it in your stash and then head to a quiet corner or dressing room and take time to look through everything and sort out what you want or don’t.

The local store I shop at had large cardboard tubs available for shoppers to put items in as they shopped. This made it easy to grab the items and then look through them in more detail before you checked out.

Here’s my recommendation for what departments to shop first:

#1   Handbags–pick up everything you like and use the shop and sort method I outlined above.  Don’t be surprised to see women with 5, 10 or even 20 bags in their clutches in their hands.  And there will be guys shopping for handbags too.  Most of them are looking for designer labels to sell of Ebay.

#2  Shoes–many of the shoes that are marked down are in boxes so you will be picking through piles to find your style and size.  There will be sales people on hand but they won’t be much help.

FYI–because of rowdy crowds, my local Dillard’s changed the set-up for the shoe department.  The area was roped off and only a certain number of shoppers were allowed in at any given time.  Once you were give access to the shoe department, you found the shoe you wanted and took it to a sale associate to get  your size.    Shoes were no longer set out in boxes.

# 3  Seasonal departments–look for holiday dinnerware and linens along with ornaments and holiday decor.  And don’t forget to think about gift giving–hostess gifts, teachers gifts, girlfriend gifts etc.

# 4  Clothing–naturally the women’s and kid’s departments will be much for busy than the men’s so if you’re shopping for him you can do that after you shop for yourself. Don’t be surprised if you see women trying things on right there on the sales floor. Dressing rooms are hard to come by during the sale.

# 5  Jewelry–you’ll find some great deals in the jewelry department but there is usually lots of product on hand so you’ll find something you love even if this is one of the last areas you shop.

# 6 Linens and housewares–January is actually the best time to buy linens and housewares so don’t kill yourself shopping these areas since you’ll find great deals throughout the month.

My final tip for shopping the sale like a pro–take your husband along so he can  make drop-off runs to the car while you continue to shop.  Promise him a lunch date at his favorite restaurant and he’ll be in for the win.

Good luck and happy shopping!

BOTTLE BRUSH TREES–Vintage Inspired Christmas

Bottle Brush Trees--Vintage Christmas Decorsource

The other night I finally had time to catch up on some blog reading.  Boy oh boy have people really gone all out  with their Christmas decor this year. From trees and mantel decor to holiday tablescapes, I found so many beautiful images to pin to my Merry, Merry and Entertaining Pinterest boards.  If you’re needing some last minute decorating or entertaining inspiration, hop over and follow me on Pinterest.

One of my favorite holiday decor themes this year is bottle brush trees.  These cute, whimsical trees have been around decades and have regained popularity over the last few years.  I actually wanted to learn more about the history of bottle brush trees and had a hard time finding any information. What I did learn was that in post-war times, the Addi’s Bottle Brush Company began to dye their toilet bowl brushes and assembled them into Christmas trees and wreaths.  I never would have guessed that this was how these cute trees got their start.

There are so many ways you can decorated with bottle brush trees. I rounded up some of my favorite bottle brush tree Christmas decor and thought it would be fun to share with you today.  Enjoy!

Stainless Steel Straws–Practical, reusable and environmentally friendly!  These are on my wish list.

iPhone Tripod–For that tech savvy person that love to take selfies, create videos or make Instagram stories. And the wireless remote makes it all so easy.

Bistro Monogram Coaster–I love the retro modern design of this coaster.

Tarion Camera Strap–This classic camera strap is under $10.00 and has great reviews.

Echo Dot--We have a DOT in just about every room in our house.  The DOT makes it so easy to control the lights, thermostat and get the latest news update with a simple voice command.

Prism Glasses–These nifty glasses allow you to  read or watch t.v. in bed while laying completely flat. Perfect for kids or those times when you’re stuck in bed with a bad back or the flu.

Milk Chocolate Grahams–Made by a family owned company in Illinois, everyone will be asking for more of this yummy treat.   You might as well pick up a box for yourself.

LED Light-Up USB Charger–For the techie who has everything!

Aerolatte Milk Frother--I bought this several years ago it love using it this time of year to mix hot cocoa. It also works great to sauces and dressings.
