Fall Tablescape Inspired by a Woodworker

Do you have one of those friends whose talent is just off the scale?
The kind of friend that possesses a skill as a sculptor or ice carver or something that blows you mind every time you see their work?
Well, I happen to have several of those friends but one in particular happens to have some mad woodworking skills.  He is so good at crafting things from wood that every time I see him I find myself saying the words “that’s amazing” about 100 times.
Meet my friend Jeff.

CIMG0068

Along with managing a woodworking store and building all types of amazing things for folks around Atlanta, Jeff is in the process of setting up an Etsy shop to sell some of the smaller decorative pieces that he makes.
Not too long ago Jeff and I were having lunch and he was telling me about these candle holder centerpieces he was making.  He described them to me and based on his description alone, I knew I had to get my hands on one and use it as part of a fall tablescape.
Here’s the piece that Jeff created.  It a chunky slab of wood that has multiple circular holes that can hold different styles of glass vases and candle holders.  I love that the piece is large and substantial and the versatility of the holes makes it even that much cooler.

The piece is crafted of mahogany and has a dark stain finish.

And here’s the Fall tablescape I created inspired by this beautiful centerpiece, made by my friend Jeff, a master Woodworker!

Instead of a fabric tablecloth, I decided to use this faux bois gold and white gift wrap I picked up at HomeGoods.  Isn’t it just awesome?  The pattern plays beautifully with the handcrafted wood centerpiece and the width is perfect as a wide table runner.

The wood centerpiece was a great size for the center of my table and offers just enough height so that it won’t interfere with conversation across the table.

Again the really cool thing about this centerpiece is that it can hold different types of candle holders and small glass vases.  The holes are about 2″ in dia. and about 3/4″ deep so any container in that size works. Lots of the candle cups available at Ikea are the perfect size.

My place settings also included wood.  The square wood charger plates I found at a consignment store.  I layered square white plates (purchased last year at HomeGoods) on top of the charger and then added floral napkins from Target.  They were one of the clearance items I recently picked up (4 for $4.88).  The gold-plated silverware was given to me by my mom and it coordinates great with  the gold of the paper tablecloth.

Instead of using just candles in the centerpiece, I used a combination of candles, flowers and mini pumpkins.

Small glass votive cups hold bouquets of fresh flowers and I painted the mini pumpkins gold and white.

The taper candles are placed in flared glass candle cups that fit perfectly into the holes.

You all know I’m big on layering my décor and a table setting is no different.  Layers are what give the tablescape depth and dimension and the mix of materials and finishes add visual impact.

My fall table was really quick to pull together and Jeff’s centerpiece was the perfect starting point for it all.  I love the way the entire table turned out.
I know Jeff is working on lots of other items for his shop so I’ll be sure to share more of them soon and let you know when is shop is open for business.
Thanks for stopping by!  I hope you’re enjoying fall as much as I am.

5 WOMEN + Words of Inspiration

Do you ever have those moments in life when you stop and think about WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU STAND FOR, WHAT YOU’VE DONE, WHAT’ YOU’VE ACCOMPLISHED, WHAT YOU STILL HAVE TO ACCOMPLISH, and how you want to see yourself and your life grow and move forward???  Well, I’ve thought a lot about that  stuff lately, not because I’m in a time of transition, but because I want to make sure I’m headed in the right direction with my life and my purpose.

When I think about these kinds of things, I can’t help but think about the people who have influenced me, inspired me and help define who I am and strive to be on a dialy basis.

There are five women that stand out in my mind, this is who I want to be when I grow up…

MY MOM

Because she opened doors and sees the best in everyone!  As an English teacher, my mom has taught me more than just how to form a proper sentence.  She also taught me (and continues to) these important lessons:

*  If you don’t have anything nice to say about a person, don’t say anything at all!

*  Have Faith!

*  If you don’t take care of yourself, no one else will!

*  Never leave home without 25 cents in your pocket, just in case you need to make a call.  This of course was  when pay phones existed but I still take this to heart and have some hidden money in my wallet at all times…just in case.

*  Money Isn’t Everything!  She is so right, there is so much more to happiness and life!

My mom’s favorite quote:  It’s better to light one candle, than to curse the darkness!

 OPRAH

Because she has shown us that dreams can come true for anyone that BELIEVES and WORKS HARD!

What I know is, is that if you do work that you love, and the work fulfills you, the rest will come.
Oprah Winfrey

ELLEN

Because she stands up and fights for what’s right versus what’s popular.

“Find out who you are and figure out what you believe in. Even if it’s different from what your neighbors believe in and different from what your parents believe in. Stay true to yourself. Have your own opinion. Don’t worry about what people say about you or think about you. Let the naysayers nay. They will eventually grow tired of naying.”
Ellen DeGeneres

Pinned Image

MARTHA

Because she has fallen down, gotten back up and never let the circumstances get her down!

“When you’re through changing, you’re through.”

Pinned Image

IRIS APFEL

Becasue she is so comfortable in her own skin and has developed a personal style that is unique and true to who she is.

“I can’t tell people how to have style. No amount of money can buy you style. It’s just instinctive. You can’t try to be somebody you’re not; that’s not style. If someone says, ‘Buy this, you’ll be stylish,’ you won’t be stylish because you won’t be you. You have to learn who you are first and that’s painful… I don’t try to intellectualize about it because it tightens you up. I think you have to be loose as a goose.”

In your moments of pondering life, who do you want to be when you grown up???  I’d love to know!

Inspired by Inspiration Boards

With some much visual and mental stimulation in  the world, it’s hard to stay focused on the things that really make  an impact in your life and/or career.

One of the ways that I keep my mind focused and my creative juices flowing is by creating an inspiration boards. Here’s one of my current boards…

images above and below by ConfettiStyle

My inspiration boards are a compilation of images, words, fabrics and objects that stimulate my creativity, inspire me and give me design inspiration.

Words to Inspire…

A special handmade card…

Jewelry Inspiration…

 and Inspiring Textiles!

My inspiration boards change throughout the year, reflecting what’s at the core of my creativity at the moment, and what my sights are set on for the future.

If you’ve never created an inspiration board, here are a few images that just might give you the stimulation you need.

My Blog Goals for 2014

In addition to setting personal goals for the new year, I have also been flushing out the goals I have for the ConfettiStyle blog.  Blogging for me is not only a creative outlet but it has become an extension of my business and has in fact brought new business, relationships and opportunities my way.  It has been an exciting journey, from my first blog post to today but I want to take my blog and the business of blogging to a new level.  Here’s what I have planned for 2014!

5e0688aab4923491bb1a826581f742aa

Better Photography–YES I’ve had my new DSLR camera for over a year and NO I haven’t even picked up the manual or watched the video that came with it.  But 2014 will be different.  Not only will I read the manual and watch the video, I’m taking a photography class this year and I’m dedicated to practice, practice, practice.  My camera is going to be my sidekick and the photos I show on my blog will be bigger, brighter and better.

8a37310545e942f41973693a84ae7799

More DIY, Crafting and How-To-Projects–I love to create and I’m planning on bringing you lots of great projects this year.  I’m not a furniture maker or wood-worker so the projects I share with you will be on the smaller scale and very do-able!  I’ve already got a long list of projects started and have begun working on some which I’ll share in the weeks ahead.  Creating things that I can enjoy in my home and life, or give to friends and family will be the foundation of my projects and of course inspiring you to be creative too!

bcac76c5899af44cc9ae8582c7ccd3a0

Quality over Quantity–When I looked back on 2013 I realize that I felt the pressure to keep up.  Keep up with the bloggers that blog daily or even twice a day, keep up with crafters that churn out 100’s of project each year, keep up with being, going and doing.  Well, I’m looking at 2014 through different lenses.  This year I may not bring you a blog post every day and I may not have two or three projects for you each month, but what I do promise is focusing on creating quality design, fashion, gifting and entertaining related blog post for you to learn from and be inspired by.  If you don’t already, I’d love for you to subscribe (on the right sidebar) to the blog so you’ll get my post delivered directly to you inbox and for you to follow me on Instagram and Facebook where I’ll be sharing design ideas and inspiration you won’t see on the blog.

27eca5deb2840fab8df8555f31c63194

More Original Content–There is so much fabulous design inspiration that can be found on the web, Pinterest and other blogs and I will continue to bring you those things that I things that catch my eye and that I think you’ll love.  I also want this year to be about sharing more original content with you.  Over the course of my blog life I’ve developed several series like The Anatomy Of…, Words to Inspire, Fashion Focus, Gift Wrap Inspiration and Design Crush.  In order to bring you more original content some of these series will continue and some will go away but I’m working on a few new series to launch this year.  How does a series called Styling 101 where I’ll share design advice for styling things like kitchen counters, bookcases, closets and hobby spaces sound to you?  What about Style Recipe where I’ll show you a room, vignette, tablescape and then break down the elements ‘recipe style’ to help you re-create the look?  I’m also planning a series called, Crafting Course where I’ll share crafting projects and the how-to behind them.  If there is anything design, gifting, entertaining and fashion related you’ll like to see here on the blog, please leave me a comment and let me know.  You all are the reason behind this blog and I want to give you what you are looking for.

98b79b3375cf96eb20005120e034775f

Get Connected–If you’re a blogger you’ve read lots of blog post about people leaving comments on blogs (or not).  As bloggers we love to hear from our readers, connect with you and know that you enjoy what we share with you.  More times than not when people, myself included read blog post they don’t leave comments, even when prompted for feedback.  Often times as a blogger we feel a bit down because we see other bloggers with lots of comments on their post but don’t see them on our own blog post.  I have a strong readership here on ConfettiStyle and there are lots of loyal commenters on my blog but I want to connect with more of you.  I hope that you’ll take the time this year to leave a comment on a blog post you love, drop me an email just to say Hi or share an idea.  I’ve made the commitment this year to comment more on the blogs I read and love, not only to connect with other bloggers but to let those bloggers know I enjoy and appreciate what they share each day!  I’d love for the new year to start with a bang so leave me a comment on this post just to say hi!

Blogging in 2014 is going to be fun and I’m so glad you are along for the journey!

My Focus for 2013

 Happy Friday!

While I’ve been busy since getting back in town from Christmas travels, I’ve also found it hard to get back into the swing of things.  Why??  Because my mind is a bit unsettled and unfocused trying to sort through ALL that I want to accomplish in the new year.  Typically I can pinpoint one, two or three things I want to do during the months ahead but as I’ve been thinking about 2013, I’ve had a hard time narrowing down my list.  Coming off a great year in 2012, I feel that 2013 is going bring lots of wonderful things my way…Good Changes, New Opportunities, Personal Growth, Personal and Professional Successes, More Wisdom, New Friendships, Greater Happiness and More Joy!

Because I see so much goodness in 2013, I’ve decided not to just focus on one or two “goals” this year but rather to have a GOAL for every month of the year.  I feel like having one thing to really focus on each month will allow me to work harder, accomplish more and reach all my goals. So here is what I’ll be focusing on for 2013…what I’m calling My Monthly Mandates!

  JANUARY–ORGANIZE & ReFRESH

The month of January will be all about getting my house and my businesses in order, ready to tackle a new year.  That means de-cluttering, purging of the unnecessary, sorting, filing, updating my inspiration board, reviewing and refreshing all my social media outlets, organizing my desk and working on a few home projects.  When I’m organized I’m a happy person!

Notebook with Envelope Pockets Make a favorite notebook or journal an organized repository for papers, business cards, and receipts by giving it a built-in pocket. Fold back the flap of a colorful envelope from a greeting card and moisten the glue strip with water. Position it on the inside of the notebook's cover, and press to attach. Secure the envelope's bottom corners with double-sided tape.

FEBRUARY–INVEST IN ME

During the month of February I’m planning on REALLY focusing on myself.  Annual doctors appointments will be scheduled, I’ll define my exercise plan for the year in detail, I’ll read more books, I’ll plan my vacations for the year and I’ll do things I really love to do.

When I have a bad food day I remind myself that I still put in the effort of going to the gym. When the scale isn't changing, I remind myself my body is growing stronger. Everyday brings me a little bit closer to my goal, even if the change is so small I can't see it. #etsy $23 gracehesterdesigns

MARCH–LEARN

I love to learn new things and try new things.  March will be my month for learning!  I got a new DSLR camera for Christmas so one of the things I plan to do is to learn how to use it and learn about photography.  I’ve also wanted to learn how to do illustration drawing s and really work with Photoshop so March will be my month to explore and learn that art.

you learn something new everyday.

APRIL–CREATE and GROW

A good thing and a bad thing about being a creative spirit is that my mind never stops thinking!  I have a list of items I want to create for my Etsy shop, a list of DIY projects I want to try, a list of ideas I want to explore and new opportunities I want to put in place to grow my businesses.  April, my birthday month will be all about creating for my spirit, for my business and for my happiness!

create

MAY–WRITE

I’ve had a book idea in my head for a couple of years and 2013 is the year I am going to flush it out.  I plan to spend the month of May writing to get it all on paper, and from there I know I can create of my dream of becoming an author!

....Write something

JUNE–APPRECIATE

Nothing more to say than this…

Appreciation

JULY–CONNECT

One of my goals for the new year is to connect with new people whether through my blog, through business functions or just reconnecting with people from my past.  I’ll make the effort everyday to do this but July will be my month to really focus on it.

#Friendship: It's not in the quantity of communications, it's about the quality of the connection #Quote

AUGUST–EXPLORE

I’ve always been somewhat of an explorer and a risk taker.  I love to try new things and find new adventures.  I plan to do just that in August!

People of today... This does not mean go out and get fucked up every weekend. It means go have new experiences. Learn new things. Explore new horizons. Challenge yourself..... <---- I like that part better than the mark Twain quote

SEPTEMBER–SHARE

I have lots of plans for my blog in 2013 but one of them is to share with you some of the sources of my inspiration.  While I’ll be doing that throughout the year, I have a few plans in the works to share more goodness with you in September!

OCTOBER–ENJOY

Typically October is a busy month, working on holiday projects, getting ready for Christmas and such.  This year I plan to slow it down a bit and remember to

Enjoy The Little Things

NOVEMBER–DREAM

I am always keeping track of the dreams and hopes I have for my life and my business.  November is the perfect time to take stock of what I’ve done, what more I want to do and continue to Dream!

DECEMBER–CELEBRATE

And when the end of the year comes around, I hope to be doing lots of this!

I’m excited about the possibilities that 2013 hold for me and I can’t wait to share it all with you. I’ve already booked two new design clients this year so 2013 is starting out great.

What I Want To Share in 2012…

Hi all.  Sorry I’ve been away for a few days.  Unfortunately I haven’t been doing too much “fun” stuff, rather, I’ve spent time outlining my goals for this blog.

When I started writing ConfettiStyle, almost 2 years ago, I developed somewhat of plan for what I wanted my blog to be about.  I knew I wanted to share my love of interior design, fashion, gifting and entertaining with you.  I knew I wanted to share design tips and design inspiration with you, as well as my favorite designers and bloggers.  And, I knew that I wanted to inspire you, in little and big ways.

We’ll, over the last week or so, I’ve been thinking about how I’ve done with my first intentions for this blog and while I don’t think I’ve failed on all fronts, I do think I’ve left a lot of what I wanted to share with you on the table.  So, I’ve developed a new  refreshed list of goals for my blog and here they are…

Pinned Image

I’ll be sharing more about my design inspirations, from products I love, books I read, projects I’m working on and all the little things that float my boat.  I’ll continue to highlight my favorite designers and people who drive me to better every day.  And, I’ve got goals of doing more DIY and craft projects this year too, all of which I’ll share with you!

I also hope you’ll follow me over at Pinterest where I’ve become an addicted Pinner, to the tune of  60 boards and over 3900 pins.  My boards are full of images and words that inspire me to no end.  Pinterest is simply mind-blowing!

Pinned Image

I love to entertain and have a head full,  computer full and notebook full of fabulous ideas to share with you.  I hope to even include a few videos to bring the ideas to life.  Stay tuned for a Valentines party tablescape coming your way in a couple of weeks.

Pinned Image

One of the things I’ve enjoyed most in my career is teaching design workshops.  I love to share my design tips, know-how and ideas, so look for more of that to come your way this year.

Pinned Image

Did you know that buying gifts, giving gifts and wrapping gifts are a few of my most favorite things.  This year on the blog, I’ll be sharing lots of info on gift shopping, gift giving and gift wrapping including fresh, new gift wrapping idea each month.

Pinned Image

Right up there with gifting, entertaining and design is my love of fashion.  I’ve got a new series called Accessible Fashions where I”ll show how to pull together great looks that won’t break the bank and give you tips to help you define and refine your personal style. I’ll also be sharing fashion trends and some creative fashion organization ideas as well.

Pinned Image

You’ll continue to see my Words to Inspire series where I hope the words, quotes and thoughts I share with you touch and inspire you. I really believe that Thoughts Become Things and thinking good things matter.

Pinned Image

And, I’ll be sharing all the down and dirty from my shopping adventures…from thift stores, to my favorite e-commerce sites, to my road trip adventures (which I hope to have many) and my Best of Etsy series.

These a just a few of my favorite things I be sharing with you throughout the year . Please let me know if there is anything you’d love to see here on the ConfettiStyle blog and most of all Thank You for joining me daily as I dish.

Happy Monday & Happy New Year!
