What Inspires Me

Greetings!  I hope you had a splendid weekend. Most of my weekend was spent indoors working on projects, writing blog post, adding new Etsy items to my shops and getting things around me organized.  Whenever I have lots of time at home I find myself evaluating things in my life…my goals, my businesses, my bucket-list, my happiness and my sources of inspiration.  It’s a time when I tune into what sparks my creativity, what makes me tick and what fuels my dreams.  I thought I’d take today and give you a little look into head and what’s been inspiring me lately. 01b7b24131c73f54a4b576bcca0cd39b

I tend to like a home that feels collected and full of handmade and vintage pieces.   It takes the right mix of textures, colors, finishes and materials to pull this look off. This room is just that to me, a combination  of pieces that have come from different places yet mix together to create a single point of view…comfortable, cozy and inviting!

A Crazy Week Ahead + Timeless Design

Happy Monday!  Did everyone have a fabulous 4th of July and a good weekend?  I hope so.  Our 4th was rained out and with all the rain we had over the last 4 days, the hubby and I felt like we were back in Seattle.  I’m glad the sun in shining today and that I got a good nights sleep last night.

I’ve got a super busy week ahead working on pulling together the details for a non-profit fund-raiser I’m heading up, going to the Atlanta Gift and Furniture  Market on Wednesday, attending an event with designer Bunny Williams on Thursday, making the trek to Scott’s Antique Market and the United Methodist Children’s Home Flea Market on Friday and celebrating my 22nd wedding anniversary and the hubs birthday on Saturday and Sunday! Oh, and there’s work to be done in between all of that.  You can rest assured I’m going to be eating my Wheaties this week.

One of the design projects I’ve worked on recently had me going back to design basics.  I found myself working with a client that likes traditional décor and wants a classic and timeless interior.  With so many of the design trends today leaning toward creative paint treatments, bold colors, artistic elements and eclectic looks, it can be challenging to  develop a look that is really timeless.

To give us all a little refresher in classic design, I’ve pulled together a little summary of 12 Timeless Design elements I always rely on!

Slide1

#1  Curtains Hung HighEvery room can benefit from hanging curtains as close to the molding/ceiling as possible. No only does this make a room feel taller but it also enhances the scale of the furniture in the room.

#2  Built-in Bookcases–Whether bookcase are used for books or decorative elements (a combination of both is my formula) , built-in bookcases add architectural detail,  storage and visual impact in any room of the house.   {to get the look on a dime, check out all the Ikea Billy Bookcase DIY projects on my Ikea Inspiration Pinterest Board}!

#3  Woven Shades–If anything can replace wood blinds in a home it’s the woven shade.  This window treatment offers just the right amount of texture, color and privacy while adding to the style of a room.  Alone or paired with curtain panels, woven shades are here to stay.

#4  Window Seats–Who doesn’t dream about having a window seat in their home?  Window seats are the perfect design element for that often neglected space in front of a window, not taking away from the view but making a room feel cozier and more intimate.

#5  Seagrass, Sisal and Jute Rugs–I know there are those of you that don’t like these natural textured rugs because of the feel or a fear of keeping it clean but for me a sisal and seagrass rug is the best way to add visual texture under foot while keeping a room feeling open and airy.   My go to source for seagrass rugs here in Atlanta is Myers Carpet.

#6  Ceramic Lamps–Lamp styles evolve but a classic round ceramic lamp will never go out of style.  Ceramic lamps provide a visual contrast in rooms with lots of wood furniture and are a great balance against metal and iron.  And the color options are endless (especially with a can of spray paint)!

#7 Sofa Tables (or console tables in general) are one of my go to pieces of furniture.  This is one piece of furniture that will work in just about every room of a home and a piece that is just as functional as it is stylish.  I love placing a console table next to bed and using it as a unique nightstand/writing-table option.

#8  Baskets–Baskets can hide a multitude of design sins (paperback books on a bookshelf, DVD’s) and are a great way to fill the space under tables, in corners or above cabinets or armoires.  One can never have too many baskets in my book.  My go to source of chunky woven baskets is HomeGoods, World MarketandIkea!

#9  Medium Tone Wood Floors–While I personally like the trend of darker espresso wood floors, mid-tone wood flooring will never go out of style.  The color is versatile and works with just about every color of textile or paint you surround it with.

 Slide3

#10  Oversized Mirrors–Just like a sofa table, an oversized mirror is one of your best design investments.  Opt for a black, gold or silver frame to keep the look classic and be creative about where you place it in your home.  Oversized mirrors work great in a dining room, foyer, over a sofa, above a fireplace, at the top of a stair landing and in a bedroom.

#11  A Neutral Sofa–A neutral sofa will not only stand the test of time but it gives you the perfect backdrop to make seasonal color and accessory changes. Timeless design gives you options and the look never goes out of style.

#12  An Upholstered Coffee Table–Since wood furniture is the foundation of so many rooms, an upholstered coffee table/ottoman is a great way to add softness without giving up a functional surface area in the room.  Plus, additional seating is ready when you need it.

So there you have it, my take on Timeless Design!  When you look around your home is your design style timeless or are you on the trendy side of design?

Happy Saturday!
It has rained in Atlanta for the last week or so and when that happens I get the urge to nest and create. I came across the image above and immediately feel in love with the black armoire, texture and warmth of the space.  This image has inspired me to make a few changes in our bedroom so while the rain falls today the hubs and I will be doing a little painting and accessorizing.  Enjoy your weekend and these links….

Little Indulgences

Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a great weekend.  Mine was jammed packed with DIY projects, blogging projects, more cleaning in the garage and spending time at  non-profit event.  I’m exhausted but can’t think about that now since the week ahead is going to be just as jam-packed.
With all the stuff going on in my life, I took a minute last night to sit and appreciate some of the little things that put a smile on my face. Those things that I often take for granted but make a big difference in how my day goes, how I feel and how much I simply enjoy life.
Here’s what’s got me grinning these days…
I drink a lot of water but during the summer I crave something with flavor so I was thrilled when one day I discovered Sparkling Ice in the grocery store.  I had never seen this beverage before but decided to give it a try.  And now I’M HOOKED!  I can’t believe these little drinks have no calories, are naturally flavored, have no caffeine, are gluten-free, are packed with vitamins and have no sodium.  There are 13 Sparkling Ice flavors and 4 Sparkling Lemonade flavors to choose from!  The hubs and I have been buying these like they’re going out of style and it has the hot summer days here in Atlanta more enjoyable. I highly recommend you try them!

On one of my recent trips to Barnes and Noble, I picked up the newest BH & Garden special interest publication called Refresh.  It is a fabulous magazine filled with easy DIY projects and budget friendly decorating ideas.  If you’re a home décor magazine fiend like me, you’ll want to pick up a copy of this magazine which I promise will inspire you.

The next guilty pleasure that has me smiling is a treat I picked up at Costco. Even though I’m not a big chocolate lover the Brookside Dark Chocolate Acai with Blueberries has become my new dessert treat.  The chocolate is super smooth, not bitter and the juice filled Acai berries and yummy! And these bad boys are great as a frozen treat too!
Darn that Costco! I always come home with something not on the list, but rarely is it as good as these!  Hooked for life~

And finally, my last little indulgence is as girly as they come.  The book sequel to The Devil wears Prada, Revenge Wears Prada, The Devil Returns  is on my nightstand.  The Devil Wears Prada is undoubtedly one of my favorite movies (I know just about every line) and The Revenge is turning out to be just as good.  I can’t wait (fingers crossed) for the movie!

So, what’s little indulgences have you smiling this summer?  I’d love to know!

Fashion Focus: Summer Tunics

Do you have a go-to summer outfit?

One of my favorite clothing pieces during the hot summer months is a Summer Tunic.  Lightweight, cotton, comfortable and classic are just a few words that I’d used to describe this staple in my closet.

14b4d734e2f22816449a2bec458f9e55

What I love most about summer tunics is how versatile they are.  You can wear them with shorts, pants, a long skirt or alone as a beach cover-up or easy summer dress (just make sure the length is right for a dress).

f0ebe2404ce36215d1fd7aa1abd7a78c

Lilly Pulitzer, known for her bright colorful prints and patterns established the summer tunic as one of her trademark designs and as an icon of summer beach resorts.  While I’d love to be wearing a tunic while sitting poolside with a cocktail in Palm Springs, tunics work just fine for my lifestyle here in Atlanta.

fffe121516ca1e22d11a23e69d8fbe89

This hot pink style above is pretty classic but I love how the Chartreuse embroidery around the color gives it some added style.  Most of the summer tunics you find in stores today have 3/4 length sleeves and an open collar.  Just perfect for showing off some summer jewelry.

e83e5becce7a0b3a97021c36e4401182

I also love the embellished neckline and cuffs of this solid black tunic.  Great with white pants or shorts.

Sleeveless tunics are perfect for a day a summer shopping or strolling around town.

Here’s are few more looks to consider…

So now that summer is here, what are you waiting for?  Pick-up a summer tunic this weekend and head to the pool.

Serenbe: A Hidden Paradise

I mentioned yesterday that the hubs and I took a road trip on Memorial Day to a small community outside Atlanta.  Serenbe is located in Chattahoochee Hill Country  about 45 minutes from Atlanta.  The drive to Serenbe is really nice, especially when you leave the main highway and travel down country roads.  You pass farmland, lush pastures, lakes and rolling wheat fields.  All along the road you’ll find cute country cottages and a few large country estates.  Just when you seem to be deep into the countryside you see the sign for Serenbe and immediately you’re transported to someplace wonderful.

The first stop at Serenbe was GreenhouseMy friend Kenya recently moved her store from Senoia to Serenbe and has created an even more adorable boutique.  Greenhouse carries a wonderful selection of vintage, fair trade and handcrafted home décor and gift items and new to their mix is clothing and personal accessories. When you walk into Greenhouse you’ll immediately be entranced by the wonderful smells of fragrant candles and handmade soaps and you’ll want to look in every corner at all the fabulous vintage pieces Kenya has found.  I am so grateful to have some of my jewelry pieces for sale at Greenhouse can’t wait to go back for another visit and more shopping.

After our visit with Kenya, the hubby and I headed to the Blue Eyed Daisy Bakeshop for lunch.  This charming café and bakery was the perfect spot to spend a leisurely afternoon sipping ice tea and watching the world go by.

The outdoor tables were just as cute as the inside of the bakery.

IMG_6148

Wood framed ceilings, brick walls and lots of vintage charm.

IMG_6149

After lunch we strolled the streets a bit and I was just in awe of the beautiful homes along the tree lined streets.  What really gives Serenbe its charm is the uniqueness of each of the homes, townhomes and condos…no two are alike.

One of the features that Serenbe prides itself on is the lifestyle of the area…
“Outdoor Lighting Regulations=Clear, starry skies”
“Native Plates & Organic Landscaping=no front or back lawns, just natural foliage”
“Walkability=everything in Serenbe is connected via a walking path”

IMG_6162

IMG_6144

The streets are lined with benches,

IMG_6153

and even the street lamps are charming and handcrafted!

IMG_6172

After doing some walking we got in the car and drove around the main property.  Beautiful farmland with lakes sprinkled about.

IMG_6166

The buzzards sit along the side of the lake and in the trees and were pretty awesome to look at.

IMG_6168

We stopped and petted the donkeys and the hubs gave me a lesson on the difference between a donkey and a mule, which was obviously needed since I thought these were miniature horses.

IMG_6169

We also petted some of the horses in the riding stable

IMG_6175

and that beautiful white horse came running towards me for a pet.  It must know I have a love for horses.

IMG_6176

We also stopped in for a visit at the Inn at Serenbe.

IMG_6177

As we drove around the property, people in passing cars would wave and I felt like I was in an episode of Little House on the Prairie, on the million dollar version~

and another beautiful home at Serenbe.  More driving and more sights to see….

and the farmer’s market field.

IMG_6154

And isn’t this sign too cute for words.  The Nest is a rental loft located on one of the main streets of Serenbe, above one of the shops.

IMG_6164

Once or twice around the property and we headed back to the center of Serenbe and coped a squat to watch a little of the afternoon activities, Bocce!

IMG_6165

Many of the homeowners ditch their cars once and Serenbe and get around via golf carts.

IMG_6163

IMG_6180

IMG_6141

Serenbe is truly a special place and although it is just a short drive from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta, I felt like I was in a secluded paradise.

My new life mission is to win the lottery, move to Serenbe and own a cute little red golf cart!
