5 Things I Can’t Live Without

Last night I attended an alumni event for the University of Louisville with my brother at this gorgeous house, owned by a prominent doctor and pilot here in Atlanta.  The property was amazing and the inside was beyond  incredible… just envision lots of beautiful textiles, antiques, amazing furniture, Carrera marble floors and so much more.  I wish I could have taken pics to show you.

As I mingled with guest I struck up a conversation with a woman and over the course of our conversation we ended up talking about things in our lives that we can’t live without. It’s enlightening to hear about someone elses life and what makes them happy and joyful.

I shared some of the things I can’t live without and to give you a little peek into my life, I thought I’d highlight 5 Things I Can’t Live Without here on the blog today!

 Nouvelle Candles

Nouvelle 11 oz. Candle - Crepe Myrtle

If you’ve followed my blog for a while you know I love candles and have one burning just about every day at home.  My favorite candle of all times is the Nouvelle Crepe Myrtle candle.  I love the strong floral scent and that the scent burns clean and is strong all the way to the end.  No wasted candle here!

Here’s how Nouvelle describes their CREPE MYRTLE candle:   Narcotic in its allure, a landmark in southern landscapes for centuries. This unique intermingling of white honeysuckle, light citrus and exotic green wood is truly captivating. Our best selling fragrance.

You can buy Nouvelle candles here!

Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Body Creme

Cashmere Mist Bath and Body Collection

I think every girl needs a signature scent and for me it’s Donna Karan’s Cashmere Mist.  I wear both the fragrance and body creme everyday!  I wish you could smell the scent through the screen but take my word for it, it’s amazing and sexy.  Head here to check out all the Cashmere Mist products.

   Chobani  Greek Yogurt

Just about every morning I start the day with this oh so yummy yogurt and a cup of green tea in one of these adorable tea cups (below).

Handpainted Tea Cups

I add a little granola to my Chobani Yogurt (my favorite flavor is the Apple and Cinnamon) and enjoy a hot cup of tea in one of these mugs from Anthropologie.  Last year at Christmas, one of these mugs was on my wish-list and over the course of the year, I’ve massed a collection of them in different patterns.  They make me happy!

And, finally…

My To-Do List and Clipboard!

I am an organizer and can’t start my week without my to-do list outlined…it’s a Sunday evening ritual.  I stumbled upon this free downloadable to-do list early in the year and love it to death!  It makes outlining all the things that need to get done in my life quick and easy.  And, to keep my list and papers close at hand, I use one of my handcrafted clipboards.  I carry my clipboard everywhere with me and love that it adds a little style to my organization.  This awesome To-Do list is courtesy of A Pair of Pears and you can download it from here!  And, if you want a chic clipboard of your own, head over to the ConfettiStyle Design Etsy shop here!

So there you have it…5 Things I Can’t Live Without.  While they may be little things, they are things that make my days a life sparkle!

What things can’t you live without?  I love to know so do share!

PB Teen–Not Just for Teenagers!

I hope you had a great weekend.  I was able to get a little thrift shopping in but was slowed down by the pinched nerve in my neck with is causing numbness in my right (writing, do-everything) hand!  I start physical therapy this week so I’m hoping that will solve the issue!  Wish me luck!

One of the other things I did this weekend was catch up on some magazine reading and while flipping through the latest issue of House Beautiful,  a PBTeen lampshade caught my eye.  It intrigued me enough that I immediately headed over the PBTeen website to see what other things they had to offer.

After spending some time on their site, I was amazed at how many cool things they had that were not only appropriate for a teenager, but also great for someone like me who is about to celebrate her 21st wedding anniversary this week!

Here’s what caught my attention:

Wood And Wire Wall Multi Basket

Teardrop Chandelier

Crystal Teardrop Chandelier–Stunning!  A great piece over a bathtub, vanity or in your home office.  $109.00 On Sale!

Kaleidoscope Kilim Rug–Love, Love, Love the colors, pattern and texture.  $169.00 to $699.00

Furlicious Desk Chair–Ok, I just lost it when I saw this chair.  So fabulous and a great buy at only $299.00.  This baby may end up on my Christmas List!

The Ooh La La Swivel Chair was my other favorite. How great would this look in a girly office or craft space.  $238.99 (for lime green) $349.00 for other colors!

So I know I’ve got you ready to hop in your car and head to the closet PB Teen store.

First one there wins!

Style AND Budget

As designers, more times than not the projects we work have a budget associated with them…an amount the homeowner has agreed to spend in lieu of creating the space they dream of and envision in their heads.  More times than not, that budget falls short of achieving every little thing we want in a space and the budget gets manipulated to achieve the best results possible.  More times than not us designers have to work our magic, challenge our creativity and in the words of Tim Gunn, “make it work” so that the end result is nothing less than  the vision.

Room designs by Massuco Warner Miller Interior Design & Decoration

When it comes to designing a beautiful space and wanting to save money along the way, there are a few tricks you can employ. Using the room images above, I’m going to point out  FIVE cost cutting measures you could make without negatively impacting the look of the room.

1 Instead of purchasing an expensive woven area rug, head to your local carpet store and find a broadloom carpet, otherwise known as your wall-to-wall carpeting, and have it cut and bound to fit your space.  And don’t fret, the designs, textures and pattern options now available in broadloom are endless.  Creating an area rug from broadloom is far less expensive than a typical pre-designed woven area rug and it’s a great way to maintain the style the your room while saving money.

2. Pillows are one the most important decorative accents within a beautifully designed room.  While my personal taste seems to be for fabrics that cost upwards of $80 a yard, I know that making pillows with yardage this expensive is not always in the cards.  Rather than give up on the look I want, I create pillows with split personalities.  I use the expensive fabric for the front of the pillow and use a less expensive fabric for the back side which is less visible.  Taking this approach, you can create a designer pillow for a fraction of the cost.

Here’s a great example using Schumacher Chiang Mai Dragon fabric which is so popular right now.  At about $135 a yard, this pillow with Chiang Mai front and back can be found on Etsy for $230.00.

SLICK OUTDOOR AQUAMARINE

CALICO CORNER SLICK AQUAMARINE  $26.99/YD

If you take the split personality approach and use Chiang Mai fabric on the front, with a less expensive complimentary fabric on the back, you could get your Chiang Mai pillow for about $ 150.00

p.s.  one thing I dont’ skimp on is the pillow inserts–down or a down mix is the only way to go!

3 When it comes to the furniture in a space, I’m always on the lookout for accent pieces at flea markets, thrift stores and online shops.  My goal is not to find a “cheap” piece of furniture but rather pieces constructed well but maybe needing a little TLC to bring it back to life.  See the round wood side table in the room image…you can find looks like this for less than $100 at flea markets and antique stores.   Here’s almost the same style table on sell via Etsy for $75.00.  Just refinish and you’ve got the look.

Round Accent Table Traditional Shabby Chic

4.  Accent seating can make or break the look of a living room or family room.  While I am all for investing in high quality upholstered arm chairs, I do think you can take the flea market, thrift store or big box discount store approach when it comes to wood accent chairs.  The red chair in the room image definitely creates a focal point in the space and because it’s a unique color, finding a less expensive chair that you can paint and achieve the look will save you money.

I’ve seen this chair style at HomeGoods on may occasions and found this one below at Overstock.com for $176.99.

Also, when it comes to accent chairs keep your mind open to slight variations in the style of chair.  You might find a chair like the style above ($128.99)  that is a bit different from what you originally planned but keeps the overall look and feel of the room intact.

Again, all it would take is a little DIY and you’ve saved a lot of money without compromising the look.

5.  And the last cost cutting measure for decorating High Style and On A Budget is don’t go overboard with the drapes.  Curtains are a great addition to any space, adding softness and texture while in many cases making a room feel taller too.  One of the ways I would save money in the room image above is to eliminate the center panels.  The impact of the curtains comes from the color, the valances and the overall scale of the window treatments.  Eliminating the center panels would not impact the look and in my opinion would actually be a bit less distracting to the room.  Side panels hung on a great curtain rod are your first choice for drapes and will give any room in your home the impact your desire.

I love designing and love working with spaces where budget is of no concern but since that is rarely the situation and given the economy, it’s great to know a few shortcuts you can take in the design process and still come out with a space that’s everything you want!

If you have any cost cutting tips you use when decorating, I’d love to hear about them and share them with everyone via my Facebook page.  And, if you haven’t LIKED ConfettiStyle Interiors on Facebook yet, hop over there now and hit that button.

Design Crush: Kishani Perera

I recently came across the design work of Kishani Perera and was instantly taken by the eclectic and vibrant mix of furniture, textiles and accessories that have become a signature for her room designs.  And, I also love her personal style!

Kishani has a love for antiques and many of her spaces incorporate old and new pieces sitting together in harmony.

She has a knack for creating elegant and stylish spaces with a true sense of personality.  I love the traditional botanical art display offset by the fun and whimsical polka-dot fabric on the stools.

This space is another great example of pieces from different eras mixed together to create a comfortable and personal space.

This space is so beautiful with simple and sleek furniture used in a room full of traditional details.  Love the neutral backdrop and bold pops of color.

In looking through her portfolio I noticed that many of the rooms designed by Kashani showcase an unexpected element or two.

What a fun fabric to use on the sofa!

An eclectic mix of textiles and details.

Love this office space–bold colors against white furnishings.

This living room setting is one of my all time favorites.  I love the oversized saying art and the texture and detail within the sofa, chairs and table.  Such a subtle space that says so much.

I’m so glad I stumbled across Kishani’s work.  She has quickly become one of my design inspirations!

To check out more of her portfolio, take a stroll through her on-line shop Rummage and learn more about my new favorite designer, head here.

Jamie, an incredibly talented and gorgeously stunning photographer living in New York, takes the most beautiful images and showcases them on her blog.  Her words and photos make her blog something special.

Yesterday, Jamie shared a special day in her life…Her Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the images made my heart stop.  This is every girls dream.

A New Addition To My Bag Obession

Yesterday I was reading one of my favorite blogs, Greige Designs where Christina wrote a lovely post about a late  summer picnic she had over the weekend.  In addition to beautiful images, she mentioned French Basketeer, a company that sells authentic French baskets, carts and totes.  Christina used one of their totes to carry all of her picnic goodies.

Now, anyone that knows me, knows I have a slight obsession of with handbags (totes included).  I can always find a reason to add yet another bag to my ever-growing “collection”.  So, after reading Christina’s post,  I immediately clicked over to check out the French Basketeer website.  They had me hooked with the image on the opening page…a gorgeous bright yellow tote!

Spurred by the efforts of France to reduce the amount of disposable products and waste, and eliminate the use of plastic bags in their country, French Basketeer was born and “the elimination of plastic bags was identified as a goal”  for the US market.

French Basketeer’s mission is “to provide authentic French baskets, carts and totes which are practical yet stylish and to help get the word out that plastic bags are indeed, “so passé.”

I couldn’t agree more and have been using canvas totes for several years now, for all my grocery shopping.  After seeing the wonderful array of totes available from French Basketeer, I’m upgrading and will be carrying one of these wonderful bags whenever I shop.

I love that their bags are perfect for grocery shopping, mall shopping and antique shopping!

Check out a few of my favorite styles:

Cassis In Fuschia–$42

St. Tropez in Rust–$43 to $48

Eze–$43

Dijon in Natural–$48

Have you given up the use of plastic bags.  If not, consider a French Basketeer tote.  Not only will you be saving the planet, but you’ll look Stylish in the process!

p.s.  French Basketeer has a wonderful blog you’ll want to check out too!

MAGAZINES WORTH READING

Just when I thought I’d never see a new design magazine in print, along comes Anthology.

Anthology is a shelter and lifestyle magazine covering the worlds of home, decor, travel, design, entertaining and culture.  The first issue will be out in October, with quarterly distribution there after.  Despite that my mailbox probably can’t handle one more magazine, I can’t wait to get my hands on this new publication.  Check it all out here!

Anthology1

And, for all you die-hard design fans, make sure to check out Rue Magazine this Thursday (9/16), when the first issue goes live.  If the sneak peeks that have popped up in blogland are any indication, this is going to be one great mag.

Happy Reading!
