Collections On Display

One of the most challenging task that I come across when decorating a space is how to deal with a collection that a client my have. This design dilemma comes into play with everyday decor and is also something that  I often deal with when decorating a home during the Christmas season.

So, today I thought I’d share a few tips and techniques on Decorating With Collections, so that your treasured possessions will enhance your decor instead of being just a bunch of stuff.

COLLECTIONS ARE A GREAT WAY TO ADD IMPACT TO A SPACE!  Displaying a collection on a focus wall or on a key piece of furniture will not only provide a visual impact within your decor, but your collection, whatever it is, will feel important and personal.

There are several collections being displayed prominently in this photo.  The wall of mirrors adds interest, texture and dimension along that long staircase wall, and the collection of pottery in the hutch draws your eye down into the room.  I love that all the “collected” elements in this space all have the same feeling and are in the same color family.

A fun way to create storage, display a collection and make an impact!

Collections don’t have to be all the same type of item, they can be a grouping of items that have the same feel, purpose and styling.  Here a collection of vintage and rustic decorative and serving pieces is beautifully displayed in this cabinet.

Long hallway walls are a great place to display a collection.  Limit the number of items so that each piece stands out and the space doesn’t become overwhelming.

I love to see a collection displayed on a tabletop.  These dog reinforce the artwork on the wall and add a whimsical touch to the traditional decor.

KEEP COLLECTION DISPLAYS ORGANIZED AND FOCUSED!  This is one of the most important things you can do when displaying a collection.  You want the items in your collection to stand out and not look like a jumbled mess.

Framing a collection is a great way to unify different styles and colors of a similar item and give it impact.  And remember, for more eclectic decor, the frame styles don’t all have to be the same, just make sure they are the same color to create a sense of unity.

 Here’s another great example of several collections displayed together. This works because the color story is narrow and similar objects are kept together, giving each vignette impact and importance.  Also notice how the size of items vary throughout the bookcase, giving the entire arrangement depth and dimension.

More mirrors on display. All silver frames in the top image, antique mirrors in the middle and round shapes below.

ARRANGE COLLECTIONS IN AN ARTFUL WAY–BE CREATIVE!  Don’t think museum display when you’re thinking about how to display your collection.  Think outside the box and showcase the things you love in a creative way.

Maybe you have a collection of found objects.  Display then in a unique container that allows each piece to stand out but keeps the collection in tact.

Glass jars are one of my favorite ways to display a collection of smaller items.  I adore this collection of buttons in a vintage jar and the collection of antique forks is beautiful in its glass cylinder.

So cute, easy and cheap!  Vintage buttons on a cork square with clear pushpins!

Hats usually get shoved onto a closet shelf.  Here they are displayed on a focal wall and really make a statement.

 Truly creative!

USE COLOR TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!  If your collection allows, try grouping like colors together or maybe create a beautiful flow of color.

Pinned Image

This glass jar collection is so beautiful not only because it’s displayed in front of a window, but also because it’s grouped to mimic the feel of a rainbow.

Pinned Image

Love books grouped by color.  Remove your book jackets and you just might have a new way of displaying your books.

A collection of boxes that pulls colors for the textiles serves as a beautiful backdrop to this room.  Smaller boxes are grouped together to balance the larger boxes that sit alone on a shelf.

What can I say?  This makes me want to start collecting teapots.  Overlapping the teapots and turning the spouts in different directions adds to the charm of this collection.  And, a background of color enhances the color impact of this display.

CREATE DEPTH, TOP to BOTTOM, and FRONT to BACK! Just as you do with tabletop decor, create interest for the eye as it moves throughout your display.

Vary the heights of items to create movement

Remember scale–smaller items surround and frame larger items giving the entire arrangement impact and symmetry.

Just in case the photos above weren’t inspiration enough, here are a few more photos of beautiful collection displays!

A Beautiful Vignette

Vi-gnette:  A breif incident or scene

Creating beautiful vignettes is one of the quickest and easiest ways to impart style and impact within your home decor.  I love creating  vignettes when I’m decorating someones home, because it allows me to take treasures, old and new and create the personality spots and points of interest within the space, similar to “window displays” within a store.

Vignettes can take on many looks and cover a small or large area, but regardless of what elements you use or where your vignette is, the rules of creating successful vignettes are the same.  Here are the tips and techniques I use to create beautiful vignettes.

*  Layering

*  Balance

* Depth

*  Texture

*  Variety

*  Connection

*  Visual Interest–left to right & top to bottom

Layer, layer, layer!   Whenever you create a vignette, you want to make sure that you layer items left to right and top to bottom.  The plate in the photo above is positioned at the back of the vignette and draws your eye into the entire arrangement.  The lamp is placed on books to elevate it and create a layer of height. And the spout of the teapot intersects the edge of the plate, cretaing a visual layer and depth.  Layering is one of the important components of a beautiful vignette.

You can create a wall vignette by massing a group of photos and art together in a creative way.  The candle sconces create visual interest that draws your eye left to right and the two images above the mirror draw you eye up.  The arrangment of accessories on the chest draw you eye down, all the way to the floor.  Check out how there are different heights within the accessories used, creating movement within the arrangement.  And the edge of all the accessories and the lamp against the mirror  intersect to visually link all the elements together.

 Balance is another key componenet in creating a successful vignette.  The visual weight of the metal finials is balanced with the mercury glass jar and smaller objects that sit with it.  The eye is drawn up with the height of the mirror and down with the basket on the floor.

 This beautiful vignette is created with a focused color palette and a variety of items.  The mirror frame positioned slightly off center creates a balance for the tall orchid.  The books on the ottoman offset the wrapped boxes on the table top and the throw blanket draped over the edge of the ottoman visually draws your eye down to the floor.  Smaller objects used on the tabletop fill in the gaps wiwithout changing the composition of the grouping.

 This is one of my favorite vignettes.  While there are not alot of items within the arrangement, the impact is great.  The wallpaper serves and a strong visual backdrop and grounds the entire collection of items.  The frames add texture and depth, the lamp adds height and overlaps the frame to create layering.  The white urn and chair cushions provide a visual contrast within the grouping.  And don’t foret the carpet….subtle texture added to the mix.

This is a classic vignette where lamps are used to anchor the grouping and a variety of accessories are used for visual interest and impact.  Love the black framed clock which reinforces the square and rectangular shapes within the grouping while at the same time serving a visual stopping point.  The photos and art are layered and the grouping of items on the mirrored tray add depth and dimension.  The entire vignette is balanced and connected.

Here are some other images of beautiful vignettes to inspire you!

 The artwork is hero and the accessories which are all about the same size and scale are positioned as the foundation to the art.

 Larger items are placed on the top shelf and smaller items ont he bottom shelf which connects the to larger furniture pieces on the floor, creating visual balance top to bottom.

 Simple and beautiful!

 Balance, texture, depth, variety

So there you have it, my take on creating vignettes.  Take a look around your home and see if your vignettes need a little sprucing up or if there’s an empty spot just waiting for a beautiful vignette!

Have a great day!

A Fun Day Of Thrifting…

And lots of new friends!

On Saturday, the nationwide I Love Thrifting event, spear-headed by Rashon, aka Mr. Goodwill Hunting took place, and let me just say it was a fun and fabulous day.

There were several thrifting groups in Atlanta, but my group was lead by the dynamic duo, Erika of BluLabelBungalow and Dayka of Meditationsonlifeandstyle. I had met Erika a couple of times before, but it was the first time meeting Dayka. Both Erika and Dayka are super sweet and I was looking forward to spending the day getting to know them and doing a little thrift shopping.

Our group gathered at our first stop,  the Goodwill at NorthLake.  We took a few moments to say hello and take a group photo. What a great group of women!

 And then with shopping carts in hand, we hit the aisles.

 One of the items on my shopping list was picture frames.  I was looking for a collection of frames that could be painted and used to create a gallery photo wall.  Here are the frames I purchased, all under $4.00 each.

 After about 45 minutes of shopping, we were off to our next stop, a true Atlanta landmark…My Favorite Place.  The parking lot was full when our caravan drove up, but we all found parking spaces and made our way to the door.  The look on the workers faces when our group of about 20 entered was priceless!

My Favorite Place is a massive building filled to the rafters (literally) with all types of treasures– old, new and somewhere between. Prices vary, but if you look hard enough and long enough, you’ll find some great deals.

 Here are a couple of items I found.  I plan to paint the wall cabinet a high gloss black and will use the silver plated bowl ( $5.75) as a flower vase.

It’s easy to spend 2 + hours in My Favorite Place, but after about and hour, we were out the door and off to another Goodwill.  During this stop several of us were approached by a woman who had checked out our t-shirts and what we were buying.  She came over and asked “how can I join the group?”  Erika gave here a business card, and we hope to see her at next years event.

Next stop, lunch.

 Lunch was a lot of fun,relaxing and  getting to know everyone.  There were a few fashion bloggers in the group who got all of us design enthusiast excited about finding fashion bargains while thrifting.  And, us design bloggers shared info about our blog sites and showed photos of some of our  furniture makeover projects.

After we nourished our souls, we  headed to our last Goodwill in Sandy Springs.

Upon our arrival, not only were we met by Elaine Armstrong, the North Georgia Director of Public Relations for Goodwill, but an 11-Alive news photographer was on site to capture all the fun we were having.   Elaine was excited to have us all shopping in the store and told us about a new Goodwill opening soon in McDonough.  We are so there!

 The day ended around 4 pm, and although I was exhausted, I was excited about the items I picked up and most of all the new friendships I made.  The I Love Thrifting event was a huge success.

 Thanks Rashon for coming up with this great idea.  I can’t wait until next year!

4th of July was a Family Affair

I hope that everyone had a fabulous 4th of July weekend.

 The hubby and I had a jammed packed weekend, attending a family reunion in Alabama and I wanted to share a few pics from the weekend with you.

p.s.  I can’t even begin to describe how hot it was, but if my drinking 8 bottles of water in a 2 hour span is any indication, then you’ve got an idea.

************

Friday night started with a fish fry, and ended with hours of dancing and socializing.

DJ Mike did a great job with the music and we only had the police show up once becuase the music was too loud.

Aunt “P” and my brother-in-law Bruce dancing the night away.

Saturday was spent at the lake having an old fashioned BBQ!

The lake was so calm and relaxing.

And, we ended the weekend with a banquet that included a fashion show and talent show.  We have some real stars in the family.

The Ike and Tina Turner impersonation was the hit of the evening!

All in all, our 4th of July was great and spending time with family made it grand!
