Christmas DIY: Jingle Bell Ribbon

In my world, when I come across an idea my first thought is not where can I buy that.  My first thought is usually ‘how can I make that?’
When I started thinking about my Christmas décor and began writing down ideas in my ideas book, I knew I wanted to craft a lot of what I’d be decorating with this year.
While at the Country Living Fair in October I spotted this burlap ribbon with jingle bells and knew I wanted to recreate the look for my tree.

Gift Wrap Inspiration: Easy Monogram Ribbon

I love a gift wrap idea that’s easy to execute and results in a stylish gift.  I’ve worked a lot with monograms lately on design projects and in my home, and that got me thinking about an easy and simple way to tie monograms in with gift wrapping.  The idea was easy to come up with and the execution is even easier.

If you’ve been in a craft store lately you know that there are all types of alphabet stickers you can choose from.  For a kid’s gift use stickers that are colorful like crayons, for a men’s gift go with a more block type front and if your gift is going to a woman go with stickers that are more feminine and scrolled.

I hope this inspires you to take a visit to the craft store and get creative with your gift wrapping using stickers.

Now on to the wrapping inspiration.

Presentation is everything and beautiful wrapping makes a gift even more special.

I folded and pleated the paper for this gift and then tied on a beautiful satin ribbon in a red and white diamond print.  A red glittered clothes pin holds a white die-cut tag I glued red dots to.

After wrapping my box in red paper, I placed a die cut note card on each end of the box and laced the two together with red and white cotton ribbon. (side view of the notecard above).

To create this look, I layered pink and red paint chip cards on top of each other and wrapped them around the box.  I used a white lace ribbon, paper mache heart and pink floral tag to finish the look.

Wrapping gifts is so much fun. I hope you’re inspired and ready to be creative with your gift wrapping and May Arts Ribbon!

What have you been crafting lately?

Let’s Get Crafty: Ribbon Tassel

As I am adding the finishing touches to my bedroom makeover, I decided to create a one-of-a kind tassel to hang on the door.

I’ve always loved tassels and have them all over my house.  To me, tassels are just the touch you need to add a bit of detail to a piece of furniture, entrance door or curtain tie-back.

If you’re needing a finishing touch for a room in your home, try making your own hand-crafted ribbon tassel.

Here’s the how-to:

Supplies needed:

  •  Wood Finial—you can find a variety of styles at your local hardware store or at a flea market like I did.  (I paid $2.00 for mine).
  • Spray Paint—in a color to coordinate with your theme.  My color theme is black, white and yellow.
  • Ribbon of your choice.  I used the following May Arts Ribbon styles:  EM10, AR10, AH27, AKN10, ARR27, 336-38-10, BH09, DH10, ADD10, 341-10, 347-78-10
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • Bead  (for dowel top)

In order to get your finial ready for your tassel, you need to do two things:

  1. Drill a small hole into the top of your finial. This hole will be used to secure your ribbon handle.
  2. Spray paint your finial to work with your color theme.  My finial was originally stained brown, so I spray painted it a high gloss black to coordinate with my ribbons.

Next, you can create your hanging loop.  To do this, I threaded both ends of a 10” length of ribbon through a large silver bead.  I knotted the loose ends of the ribbon to keep the bead on.

Now you’ll need to cut your ribbon into various lengths.  Having different lengths of ribbon within your tassel will give it more movement and interest.

I cut selected ribbons in 13” lengths, 11” lengths, 9” lengths and 7” lengths.

Once all my ribbon lengths are cut, began gluing them to the bottom of my finial.

I glued one style of 13” ribbon on first by laying the ribbon face side up in a cross pattern.  I glued the finial to the middle of the ribbons.

Next, I glued two pieces of 11” ribbon onto the finial bottom, followed by two pieces of  9” ribbon and lastly, two pieces of 7” ribbon. Continue gluing ribbons onto the finial bottom in various spots so that the lengths vary in position around the based of the finial.

Once all your ribbons are glued in place, glue your handle into the hole drilled at the top of your finial. Push your bead down so that it sits on the finial top.

I added a loop of 1/8” yellow ric-rac (ARR27) around the finial base to give a finishing touch.

And there you have it, a super easy, but very stylish Ribbon Tassel to give your home a little pizzazz!

RIBBON DETAILS

Each of us has that one thing (maybe more), that makes our heart beat a little faster and our palms sweat.  Believe it or not, ribbon is one of those things for me.  I just adore ribbon!  Ribbons of all sizes, colors, textures, materials and patterns.

I’ve collected ribbon for many years and have more of it than I’ll probably ever use in my lifetime, but I just can’t help myself.  I love to use ribbon in my craft projects and come Christmas season, I become a maniac with ribbon on my gift wrapping.

One of the other great uses of ribbon is in decorating.  A little ribbon can turn an ordinary object into something really beautiful.  Check out these photos of items that have been enhanced with ribbon.

How cute are these pillows with ribbon detail?  This is a great DIY project that doesn’t even call for a sewing machine…just a little fabric glue. via

This ribbon draped bed skirt would be really cute for a girls room.  I also think a darker bedskirt with more sophisticated ribbon would look great in an adult bedroom. via

Diana at Fine Diving sewed ribbon together to make a fabric of sorts and covered these chairs. Complete tutorial on her site.

Here’ a simple bulletin board has been draped with ribbons to give it a bit of flair.  What a great way to dress up an office space or that bulletin board in the kitchen. via

I love this ribbon wall for a child’s room.  Just imagine it in navy for a boy’s room.  via

A great way to dress up plain curtain panels is with a little ribbon detail.  The stripe layout on these sheers really give the curtains a modern feel.

A little detail goes a long way in dressing up a piece of furniture, like the ribbon detail on this ottoman. via
